The only thing that ticks me off about about Dessay is that whenever she does a messa di voce, it's ALWAYS from forte to a pianissimo. I just wish she would start out on a top note from pianissimo, then maybe swell, that to me sounds less jolting and strident and more finessed IMHO. Don't kill me, you Dessay fanatics!
I had the privilege to see here live at the Lyric in Chicago a few years ago in Lucia di Lammermoor. What a performance she gave, despite the fact that hers is not the type of dtramatic voice one thinks of for that role. She is a light lyric soprano.
But she blew away those critics that said she could not pull it off!! I wouldn't have missed it for the world!!!!

This was very very nice vocally and dramatically. There are many recordings of this aria and this one of Natalie's is amongst the very best for me. My favorite (purely vocal) is Bevery Sills from her 1968 opera recital recording (not her one from the full opera she recorded w Janet Baker). I think Beverly's recital is now on CD. But now...Brava Natalie...lovely phrasing, vocals and interpretation!
Yes, the 1968 Beverly Sills recording is (so far) without peer. It has a lot of high soft singing and her focus is amazing. It was on You Tube briefly, but someone took it off.
You're totally right, we should simply never listen to this aria again after Sills. In fact, why don't we institute a death sentence for any soprano or opera company that would dare perform anything Sills ever did again.
If all you can say when listening/watching an artist interpret a piece is so n so is better than you've never really appreciated opera.

I would vote for that. I heard Natalie Dessay sing Violetta in La Traviata this last summer in Santa Fe. She couldnt sing the part, rolled around on the floor (she got Violetta and Lucia mixed up) and was simply the worst performance of Violetta in La Traviata I have EVER seen. Sorry, but I wanted my money back.
This discussion is about this piece, not Traviata. She sings this well. She is by no means my favorite singer, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have anything to say in an appropriate role.
Sills is spectacular in this role though I personally prefer the full opera version to the recital. Its one of those rare moments when a singer totally becomes one with music and in turn seems to make it her own, despite the many wonderful recordings.
Dessay brings qualities to this aria that Sills never could and visa versa. That is one the best things about opera. There aren't better versions there are different versions. Unless you're some pushy closed hearted/minded opera queen who is into diva worship.
The fact that Dessay's voice is unattractive and is weak and childish, does not mean anything? Dessay's acting is bad, if not for music one will never distinguish between her Amina and Lucia. Oh, I forgot Dessay is ugly - that should be a plus! So, she got a "proper" training, so why then Dessay was booed at La Scala? Because people in Italy know a thing or two about beautiful singing, they mostly value the voice, and there Dessays perfect training meant nothing!

Wow this is such a moving performance. I loved it. This is my favourite aria on the new album, and it is quickly becoming one of my very favourite from her repertoire. Thank you.
You should hear montserrat caballe - she sings real bel canto.
