08 doesn't have an external fuel filter. Non serviceable...btw u have a leak above ur oil filter. Possibly a PS pump. LOL u say to use a OEM oil filter but you have a FRAM...nice!!
The 2012 Impreza has the oil filter on the top of the engine. Very handy. As well, I have heard of some people pumping out the used oil from the top. This means never having to get under the car for an oil change.
How important is the changing of the crush ring? When my mom drove it a couple of days ago, the car started smoking up. I am still questioning whether if it were caused by me not replacing the crush ring thus the oil is leaking and burning on the tubes or if there were really something wrong with the engine. Since I am not really close to any Subaru dealers, I really want to know if I can take care of the problem without resorting to the pricey manufacturer.
@RandomConcepts it is common practice to prime the filter with a little oil my father is a mechanic and has done it for over 25 year. i would never change oil on a cold car. the oil does not flow as well nor does it come it warm up potential sludge to get it out of the sump
very helpful video! can u make more videos about maintaining subarus? such as brake fluids, brake pads, and other kinds of fluids a car needs in order to run? thanks!
@AlphaNate Very minimal at best. Plus as long as you're doing your OCI at around 5k, it shouldn't matter much unless you are changing from conventional to full syn.
That and practical reasons... not everyone has a lift.
crush washers dont absolutely need replaced every time. they are made of the same material as a banjo bolt washer for a caliper, copper. i have done probably tons of oil changes on my 04 STi (56k miles) and it still has the original crush washer. doesnt leak a drip of oil.
Yes, crush washers are replaced EVERY TIME. Flat side on the plug, round side to the pan.
For pulling the filter, go grab yourself a filter cup and a 6 in. ratchet extension. Just take the ratchet off and spin the extension to start the new filter.
As for the gearbox, you need a special Torx bit (it's a T70 or 80 size) to pull the drain plug. Filling it is done through the dipstick found on the passenger side of the top of the final drive unit, it's hard but you can fill it with quart bottles.
@eautocad Huh? Mobil 1 0W-40 is a full synthetic. There are cheaper alternatives like Shell Helix Ultra however. Both approved by Porsche/Ferrari etc. So I'm sure it's fine for a Subaru.
@eautocad umm... if by, not a true synthetic you mean, its mixed with Group III and Group IV oils then... you are still wrong because Group III is still considered synthetic by oil companies. Granted its not a Group V oil like Motul and not Ester based but... for its pretty overkill for normal driving.
Great video. One question, however: did you put the flat side of the crush washer against the oil pan? I'm pretty sure that the rounded side goes towards the pan and the flat side sits against the drain plug.
I doubt it makes any real difference, but think the shop manual says to do it as I suggested.
Yeah the black ones are imported from Tokyo Roki in Japan and are/were hands down the most well-constructed oil filter I've ever used. Unfortunately it seems like everyone is going "on the cheap" with this recession though. :(
@l8z8 Totally not worth skimping on an oil filter. The original Subaru ones are pricey, about $13 here, but hey, you spend more on Subway, don't risk it.
should also note for those doing it on a wrx, or even rs etc, the headers are very close to the oil filter, and be carefull not to burn your hand. I have my accident a few times, nice little blister has formed because of it
It's worth noting that more oil drains from a car on a level surface vs. the incline of a ramp. Also, to those who are interested - a OEM Subaru oil filter goes for $5.50 - $6.00 at most dealerships. You can also buy the crush rings for the drain plug in packs of five for about $2. The gaskets they sell at Autozone work, but are made of a lower quality material.
Also a few people on here have said they use non-OEM filters. Please understand that there are plenty of aftermarket filters that will fit Subaru; however, the only oil filter that has a pressure relieve spring rated at 23PSI is Subaru's OEM Oil Filters. Subaru oil pumps are high volume pumps. If you use aftermarket you're going to be recirculating some unfiltered oil because the vast majorty of aftermarket filters have bypass pressure relief springs set to 10-14PSI.
yeah...not that easy without the ramp. and make sure you get a filter wrench and some wd-40 if you had the shop do it last time. sometimes they put that thing on with a torque wrench. very informative though. thanks!
Ya fram so is purolator both have had pob. with them breaking down not so much with mobile 1 but i have yet to have a K&N come in with it broke down dont know if it was a bad batch but from and purolator dont seem to hold very well in racing every day driving yes but still would use K&N or Mobil 1
:o) I used to just grab the orange can. Then someone pointed me to WIX filters, thank GOD ! and then i was introduced to AMS Oil Full Synthetic. Praise the LORD ! lol

@zeroflat24 I suppose not. With as cheap of a part as it is, and as easy as it is to replace, though, it doesn't hurt.

And for the rear differential, it's just a 1/2" square drive -- standard ratchet to pull the drain and fill.

you shouldn't use mobile 1 it's not a true synthetic.. try out amsoil it's the best but pricey

If you are really picky get the black Japanese Subaru filters not the blue purolator Subaru ones some USA dealers sell.
franzdom 2 years ago
Actually, USA dealers now have blue Subaru oil filters that are made to Subaru spec by FRAM in Canada.
