I have a question. I fly a lot and I also use Ryanair. I lately noticed that the ryanair planes come in very fast and often make a hard landing. Is that only my opinion or others have the same experience with this?
Ok just to clear it up -the hard banking is because its a cirlce to land procedure whereby it flys an approach to the opposite runway flys past the airport then does a 180 degree turn at 30 degrees angle of bank to align with the runway in use.
Carcossone has a 4 degree glideslope, not the normal 3, rate of descent on the approach is therefore 850/900ft per minute instead of a typical 700/750 FPM.
if you dont land in the touch down zone its not particularly good news. Therefore a combination of a high and unusal rate of descent and a short runway meaning you really do need to put it on the ground quickly leads to, more often than not, a "hard" landing. A hard landings are not bad landings, trying to grease it on is when the airport has a short runway.
Looks pretty normal for Ryanair.Normal being shit!! They're not pilots, just cheap aircraft operators, and their lack of skill usually shows up on landing.Only a matter of time before they kill someone, they've had too many close shaves!
ryanair landing's are all the same : the plane is always shaking, very hard touch down and break very very hard to ive flown to carcassone it was horrible.
Looked like just about every landing I ever seen...the touchdown might not have been as smooth as possible, but sometimes the pilot has to stick the landing if the runway isn't that long
one being a 4degree glide on final to avoid overflying carcassonne town itself too low, papi's also set to 4 degrees. Another being the LDA of 1900m for runway 28 and 1950m for runway 10. This distance is approaching the performance limits of the 738. You people can take my word for it that this is no straight forward approach or airfield to fly into, add to it moderate turbulence on final with wind from south makes this a very challenging detination for even the most seasoned pilot.
@EireEmerald hey bud! cheers for posting that and letting everyone know how nice the approach is into there. gotta love the professionals who sit in the back! hope your gettin on well in ryanair. doing the ir at the mo hoping to look for them for a job after if theyll give me one ha! best of luck with everything and safe flying! slan!
I fly into carcassonne pretty much weekly for this company. This aircraft landed on runway 28 which has no instrument approach either percision or non-percision, so a CATIII A (approaches ryr are approved to fly) is out of the question. No straight in visual approach is allowed for runway 28 due local traffic reasons. The approach i fly week in week out is an ILS 10 circle to land (north of field due terrain south) 28.This is quite a challenging approach for many reasons.
yeah i know how they were treated my friend was a hostess there.. she got pretty sick and they wouldnt allow her leave to recover so she just had to leave that is pretty shitty and i do agree with you and strongly oppose their treatment of cabin crew but i did have many bad experiences with cabin crew with ryanair being a bit cranky and strict.i just wasnt as friendly an atmosphere as you do in other airlines.dont get me wrong though because im currently training and will prob work for them ha
heya ill have to disagree with you on that point and your previous point...ryanair pilots are just as qualified as pilots in other airlines as they all go through the same training...if not more qualified as ryanair pilots fly most of the 900hr limit in aviation in comparison to ba or aer lingus who fly 750 800 hrs.. ryanair have one of the best safety rating with no fatal crashes..they only had incidents e.g cabin decompression and engine failures due to bird strikes.
also as ryanair fly to the middle of nowhere it means they fly into a lot of non ils airports which means they have to do a lot of hands on flying in comparison to major carriers who these days carry out a lot of auto landings. the only thing ryanair can brush up on i beleive is their customer services i.e be more friendly!! oh and they wont be charging you for the toilets it was just one of michaels random ideas so dont worry!;)
The only thing they should brush up on is their customer service??? If you knew how poorly the staff were treated, you would understand why they dont always want to be happy. its not just the pilots who work their maximum hours in this company. Everything else you said though, I agree with.
not true, most airliners still use pilot landings mostly and maybe in harsh conditions do they use the autolanding, but i agree that good and bad pilots are everywere
Daspid, you'd be surprised how many landings are done with ILS and autoland, pilots dont necesarily fly the same route every day, or may fly to one place, then fly somewhere else, they may not know the airport well enough to do a manual landing. All pilots in europe do training to JAA standards for the ATPL and then work with a company to get a type rating, this case a 737 one, working for ryanair makes no difference whatsoever to their ability as a pilot.
About the routes: I'm pretty sure about how an airline pilot works, trust me. Even so, the fact that they usually cover about 25-35 airports for the equipment they fly (i'm going a bit loose on the number) and they don't "know" the airport well, it shouldn't affect their decision to either use or not the autoland feat., autoland was basically invented for low visibility (doesn't mean you can't use it on fair weather conditions)
About the autolanding: Not all aircraft are certified for Cat III ILS and not all airports have CAT III-C runways; even so, the airliner should give the pilot a CAT-III course to be able to use autoland so overall is not easy to get too many autolands over manual landings, that's what i mean by saying there are not too many pilots doing autolandings compared to the amount of flights a day
And ive seen many bad pilots get their type rating for some airliners so they can be anywhere lol.
Can also be that I am mistaken, but there are many crashes. Do not take over a euro for the toilets? XDD OMG and the staff is not as good, but as I said I may be wrong!
Yet another comment from me, this time regarding the landings! I have always been taught its better to firmly land the aircraft in the touchdown zone, rather than grease it halfway down - this is what Mr Boeing reccommends too! We are only human and the conditions for each landing are not the same. Book a sim session for yourself and give it a try. As one captain said when a c/crew joked about his firm arrival, he said she 'could walk off the a/c or dig herself out the ditch at the far end!'
Regards to my previous post, I now work for Ryanair as flight crew so can compare our turnaround to other airlines. I am not going to quote out of our SEP manual here, but I feel there is no difference between RYR and, say, easyJet. In fact our aircraft are probably easier to do these checks as there are no seatback pockets, and on the newer aircraft, lifejackets secured in the overhead PSU's, rather than under seats.
The 25 min turnaround is something that happens in many airlines. I worked at EDI as a flight dispatcher for 3 years. EasyJet used to have 20 min turnarounds on there B737-300's, now 25 min. (Airbus fitted with ACARS, so the company knew exactly what time the a/c pushed back, but that's another story!). Flybe also have 25 min turns. Even the Aer Lingus that passed through had a 25 min turn - believe it or not, NO security checks by crew, they were ready as soon as the last pax was off.
The quick turn around policy isn't always applied on all flights for all airlines.
The combinations of a heavy landing weight and early application of heavy braking should anticipate reviewing the the RTO brake cooling chart before commencing a takeoff.
what relevance does the 25 minute turnaround hold? ryanair flights are usually very punctual and i've arrived early at my destination every time. no messinga round with cleaning and whatnot like other airlines
lucky you! my ryanair flights have been delayed many times because they dont seem to be able to get the flight ready in the 25 minutes that they have. when i came back from riga once the plane sat outside for an hour before they could let us on.
Ryanair admitted that during a 25 min turnaround they do not get all safety and secuarty checks done. e.g Making sure life jackest are not missing, fire equipment is working, oxygen supply, toilets , passport checks excetra. It also puts Flight and cabin crews nder extreme pressure.
I suppose this information is gathered from the greatly fabricated Dispatches Investigation? I swear easyJet has a 20 minute turnaround..or used to anyway.
Ryanair has had many incidents with landing because it puts its fligh crews under tremendous stress on account of a turnaround time of just 25 minutes.
June 4, 2006, a Ryanair flight carrying 134 passengers came within 425 ft. of the ground as it passed over the suburbs of Cork and the cockpit "ground proximity" alarm sounded twice when the pilot executed a tight 360° turn after realizing he was too high to make a safe landing.
Hmmmm....so if he was too high, how can there be a ground proximity alarm!! you idiot. Amazing the number of people who post opinions with zero aviation knowledge.
I think Ryanair is great. They do not want to have a good service, they want simply bring people from A to B, and this for a very good price. Another point is, that Ryanair has a very young fleet, much younger than KLM, so I think Ryanair is a safe Airline. They haven´t ever had an accident. Sorry for mistakes in English, i´m 13 from austria.
Ive done a lot of weekend trips to different cities with ryanair, and generally the cabin crew have been friendly. on longer international flights with non-budget carriers, ive encountered far ruder cabin crews....anyway, and for what it is, ryanair is great.
tayavari1 says "because they give the ordinary people the chance to affords ticket fares." in that point she hase right but ryanair is not the best.(sorry i`m dutch) KLM seccond class is a "little" bit better than ryanair bisniss class
ryanair doesnt have different classes, and i doubt KLM offer flights for as cheap as ryanair. the point it is, for what it is, Ryanair is good. its a fucking BUDGET airline, KLM is not
ryanair is the best because they give the ordinary people the chance to affords ticket fares and in other words people travel, people complain ryanair this ryanair that, if you don't like it go elsewhere.and for the pilots thumbs up, its not easy flyin that thing you know.
ryanair is OK for short trips. I've travelled with them 5 or 6 times and not had any major problems, just minor delays and some rude cabin crew. However, I wouldnt like to be one of the many unfortunate ones to get stranded by them or worse!
ive been to that part of France myself and its pretty windy. My friends were travelling home from Carcassonne and their flight got diverted to Nimes because of such strong winds.
That looks like a fairly smooth landing to me. I had a landing into Gatwick a few weeks ago where was going from side to side so much from cross winds that it made you think whether you'd land on a wing tip or the wheels.
The RYR pilot however nailed her into the run. A hard landing but a necessary one...
In one landing, I remember the plane braked very hard to come to a slow taxiing speed then it kept going straight to the other end of the runway to then turn and head to the terminal. Why wouldn't he use the whole runway for a softer braking experience?
My cousin once told me that his RYR flight to Sgo de Compostela,Spain landed so hard that it hurt in his back for a few days
Im not saying this video is a crap landing, but RYR landings are heavy braking
I am a RYR pilot, firstly the IAA only deal with Irish licence holders, Ryanair have 1400+ pilots from all nationalities. I have UK licence. This approach into CCF is nearly always windy, it has a short runway, and the glideslope is 4deg, usual is 3. London City is 5deg. It is much steeper than norm because of town. You don't mess about with steep approach and short runway, fly her straight on positvely and get on the brakes. Passengers like soft landings but if you float you're in the clink.
Ive flown there once, was pretty fun :) circle to land or whatever it's called - establish on the localiser down to circling minma and then take it visual - i think.
That was a normal landing. Pilots in simulators are put through the worst weather conditions, far worse than a lot of people have ever flown in. A landing like this is normal and routine.
i work for ryanair as a dispatcher the pilots are very well trained and the aircraft are brand new and too right mate what do people want for 1p flights??? you get on, sit down ryanair take you there end of story. if you want service book with a non-budget airline. i tell passengers this everyday.
i dont see anything wrong in the landing at least you made it out alive---the rule of flying "you made your way out of the plane you are safe...you didn't you're not safe"
if you think this pilot (no matter the company at all) is going to try a kind of smooth landing in a windy day in short runways where ryr usually lands is because you all are crazy, or don't know anything about aviation
Fuck off are they! They are as good all the others! Do you really think the CAA or who ever is incharge will allow shit pilots to take control of 200 peoples lives! I dont think so!
exactly that was normal landing ... people who dont know enything abaut flying or flight physics can take this landing as very shaky but it was easy and calm landing ... one day I was landing in stansted with 90 knots and 25 deg. crosswind ... that was extremaly ... afetr landing everybody was asking "we have landed or crashed?"
That was just a normal landing! Nothing unusual at all. All airlines land like that - sometimes the wings rock a little more or less on landings, just depends on the crosswind. The pilot or airline cannot control the weather - it can get a LOT more windy than that...
of course, look at their safety record.. nearly 100%. Fleet of aircraft exceptionally well maintained.. only some doubt over the way they operate (cabin crew, unstable approaches etcetc)
I cant understand why people hate Ryanair. They have new aircraft, professional uniforms and nice leather seats. But most of all they almost fly you for free!
Say what you want about Ryanair but people continue to **CHOOSE* to fly on them. Not a single person was forced to fly. I know that is a difficult concept for socialists.
From everything i've heard about RyanAir, they are the Europian Version of Virgin Blue in Australia. And that is Fucking Shit. expensive food, tiny plastic seats, and OLD LADY flight attendents. Fuckin Budget bastards.
this remind me of when i went to Girona it was soo scary! the plane shock more than this one and the landing was not smooth! it was like BAMM! everyone scream and the worst thing was the the pilot was a rookie! wtf??! ryanair might have state of the art Boeing 737-800 but when it comes to fly is like damn they are fast as hell! compere to other airlines and we were 15 minutes earlier than expected but rookie pilots made me decide hellno im not flying them again!
haha reminds me of flying back with ryanair from carcassonne to stansted - plane dropped about 2m almost at the end of the runway when landing, had to do it again. Ryanair is generally sound however, sickbags double up as photo envelopes. Best airline ever!
ryanair doesnt give a fuck about customer satisfaction. all they care about is money, and let everyone know about it. cabin crew also has to pay for their training. if i could, i would just shut it down.
Look Ryanair is what it is! They got clean new planes, good pilots that are as well trained aand as experienced as non budget airlines...they have too be, they have peoples lives in their hands! They fly you around Europe for half nothing....what do you expect for one cent flights?...royal fuckin treatment? Grow up people!
I and my relatives have flown Ryanair lots of times. They are very punctual and they have one of the newest fleets. The 737-800 is an excellent plane. I can assure you, from my experience they have excellent pilots.
So, the Ryan Air pilot is instructed to land as slowly as he can and use Thrust Reverser before brakes. You need very good Pilots to operate a 25 minute turn around. The Pilots who fly for Ryan Air fly more sectors per day than a long haller in a week. The airlines need these Pilots to be the best. Thanks for reading.
Secondly, TURNAROUND time is usually limited by brake cooling time. This is because the reg's require brakes to handle max speed rejected take off, and the brakes can't be hot and be good.
Corrections to comments. Firstly. Lowcost airlines take a lot of extremely well trained Eastern European ex military pilots as well as UK and Western European pilots.
Ryanair is one of Europe's safest and greenest airlines. They have some of the highest paid pilots in Europe. They maintain there aircraft to a very high standard and most of there fleet on average is only 2 years old. Take look at Air Frances safety records other the past few years, its not good. Ryanair operates one of the world most popular and safest aircrafts the Boeing 737-800. Don't Pick on Ryanair Until you now all the FACTS which most of you don't!!
Airlines where you pay more means theres more money for pilot training. Also pilots at ryanair will land faster to keep there plane on time because of the 25minute turn around time.
But Ry it's not up to the airlines how their pilots are trained and it's certainly not up to the pilot to take liberties with landings. Also I'll repeat myself low cost carriers are more profitable and so no there is not a lack of funds to put into training (if there was the carrier could not operate). The truth is you just don't like Ryanair.
Ryanair is one of Europe's biggest airlines. They made a 401 million euro profit so far this year allot more than Virgin Atlantic 37 million pound. The money from Ryanair profit goes into buying new aircraft and buying the newest and best 737-800 series flight simulators for assessing each of there pilots. Most of the "Airlines where you pay more" some times don't even make a profit so less money in-fact is spent on maintaining aircraft and pilot training.
Who said that that was turbulence. You moron, dickweed! Dont you know that it was a classic case of flying sausages accidentally getting sucked into the engines? Good god how can you be so naive?! The government has being using these for years to fly above our towns and cities to scan our brains for impure thoughts about spiders. You dont know that?! Jeez...
We had similar landings from London Stansted to Granada, Spain. Speed brakes didn't seem to cut in and the reverse thrust seemed to throw people around a lot in their seats. Never had a landing like it. The landing on the return flight was even worse, the plane rattling violently and bouncing on contact with the runway. As an airline they seem to be very stretched.
Cool! i'm sick and tired of good landings. When i was on a 747 you could barely feel it it touch the runway! where as if you are with Ryanair you can gaurantee a nice, bumpy one!
I have a question. I fly a lot and I also use Ryanair. I lately noticed that the ryanair planes come in very fast and often make a hard landing. Is that only my opinion or others have the same experience with this?

I think Ryanair is great. They do not want to have a good service, they want simply bring people from A to B, and this for a very good price. Another point is, that Ryanair has a very young fleet, much younger than KLM, so I think Ryanair is a safe Airline. They haven´t ever had an accident. Sorry for mistakes in English, i´m 13 from austria.

A typical Ryanair 'three bounce' landing. Anything less than three, and you'd be disappointed.

I totally agree!!!

You obviously have never flown on a non-budget airline if you think that Thomas Cook and Ryanair are great. Good grief!

Ive done a lot of weekend trips to different cities with ryanair, and generally the cabin crew have been friendly. on longer international flights with non-budget carriers, ive encountered far ruder cabin crews....anyway, and for what it is, ryanair is great.
sgrenaboy 3 years ago 2
tayavari1 says "because they give the ordinary people the chance to affords ticket fares." in that point she hase right but ryanair is not the best.(sorry i`m dutch) KLM seccond class is a "little" bit better than ryanair bisniss class
flightstar1 3 years ago
ryanair doesnt have different classes, and i doubt KLM offer flights for as cheap as ryanair. the point it is, for what it is, Ryanair is good. its a fucking BUDGET airline, KLM is not
sgrenaboy 3 years ago
For low butget airliner is ryanair good but when you have the mony to fly with KLM go fly with KLM but when you have no money fly with Ryanair
flightstar1 3 years ago
Yeah exactly, that is the whole point.
sgrenaboy 3 years ago
ryanair is the best because they give the ordinary people the chance to affords ticket fares and in other words people travel, people complain ryanair this ryanair that, if you don't like it go elsewhere.and for the pilots thumbs up, its not easy flyin that thing you know.

ryanair is OK for short trips. I've travelled with them 5 or 6 times and not had any major problems, just minor delays and some rude cabin crew. However, I wouldnt like to be one of the many unfortunate ones to get stranded by them or worse!

yes ryanair allows the riff raff to travel ;)

ive been to that part of France myself and its pretty windy. My friends were travelling home from Carcassonne and their flight got diverted to Nimes because of such strong winds.
PrettyDarnOdd 3 years ago
That looks like a fairly smooth landing to me. I had a landing into Gatwick a few weeks ago where was going from side to side so much from cross winds that it made you think whether you'd land on a wing tip or the wheels.
The RYR pilot however nailed her into the run. A hard landing but a necessary one...
hurleytom 3 years ago
I've been on many RYR bounce landings.
Im not saying this video is a crap landing, but RYR landings are heavy braking
ro2nie 3 years ago
what was abnormal about that??? none of you have obviously landed in HK with cross winds! hahaha now that's a fun ride
bostonalext 3 years ago
I am a RYR pilot, firstly the IAA only deal with Irish licence holders, Ryanair have 1400+ pilots from all nationalities. I have UK licence. This approach into CCF is nearly always windy, it has a short runway, and the glideslope is 4deg, usual is 3. London City is 5deg. It is much steeper than norm because of town. You don't mess about with steep approach and short runway, fly her straight on positvely and get on the brakes. Passengers like soft landings but if you float you're in the clink.
RYR738 3 years ago
4 degrees - really?
Ive flown there once, was pretty fun :) circle to land or whatever it's called - establish on the localiser down to circling minma and then take it visual - i think.
spitfir3ace 3 years ago
That was a normal landing. Pilots in simulators are put through the worst weather conditions, far worse than a lot of people have ever flown in. A landing like this is normal and routine.

i dont see anything wrong in the landing at least you made it out alive---the rule of flying "you made your way out of the plane you are safe...you didn't you're not safe"
aceflyer89 4 years ago
I had a worse landing than that when I was going for a skiing holiday to Salzburg.
LittleimaginatioN 4 years ago
You are forgetting the golden rule of flying "Any landing you can walk off is a good landing"
yojo619 4 years ago
there was nothing wrong with that landing under the circumstances of a decent cross wind. but then again i do fly for ryanair so im slightly biased.
EddyTC 4 years ago
if you think this pilot (no matter the company at all) is going to try a kind of smooth landing in a windy day in short runways where ryr usually lands is because you all are crazy, or don't know anything about aviation

737 can take it. Built like tanks they are....
type2mike 4 years ago
exactly that was normal landing ... people who dont know enything abaut flying or flight physics can take this landing as very shaky but it was easy and calm landing ... one day I was landing in stansted with 90 knots and 25 deg. crosswind ... that was extremaly ... afetr landing everybody was asking "we have landed or crashed?"
rabinowsky 4 years ago 2
That was just a normal landing! Nothing unusual at all. All airlines land like that - sometimes the wings rock a little more or less on landings, just depends on the crosswind. The pilot or airline cannot control the weather - it can get a LOT more windy than that...

this remind me of when i went to Girona it was soo scary! the plane shock more than this one and the landing was not smooth! it was like BAMM! everyone scream and the worst thing was the the pilot was a rookie! wtf??! ryanair might have state of the art Boeing 737-800 but when it comes to fly is like damn they are fast as hell! compere to other airlines and we were 15 minutes earlier than expected but rookie pilots made me decide hellno im not flying them again!
MadridHopper005 4 years ago
haha reminds me of flying back with ryanair from carcassonne to stansted - plane dropped about 2m almost at the end of the runway when landing, had to do it again. Ryanair is generally sound however, sickbags double up as photo envelopes. Best airline ever!
telstarbox 4 years ago
ryanair doesnt give a fuck about customer satisfaction. all they care about is money, and let everyone know about it. cabin crew also has to pay for their training. if i could, i would just shut it down.

I and my relatives have flown Ryanair lots of times. They are very punctual and they have one of the newest fleets. The 737-800 is an excellent plane. I can assure you, from my experience they have excellent pilots.
cattleman6420012000 4 years ago 3
So, the Ryan Air pilot is instructed to land as slowly as he can and use Thrust Reverser before brakes. You need very good Pilots to operate a 25 minute turn around. The Pilots who fly for Ryan Air fly more sectors per day than a long haller in a week. The airlines need these Pilots to be the best. Thanks for reading.
Bristolbrave 4 years ago 2
Secondly, TURNAROUND time is usually limited by brake cooling time. This is because the reg's require brakes to handle max speed rejected take off, and the brakes can't be hot and be good.
Bristolbrave 4 years ago

04p2luh 4 years ago 2
Airlines where you pay more means theres more money for pilot training. Also pilots at ryanair will land faster to keep there plane on time because of the 25minute turn around time.
Ry200 4 years ago
But Ry it's not up to the airlines how their pilots are trained and it's certainly not up to the pilot to take liberties with landings. Also I'll repeat myself low cost carriers are more profitable and so no there is not a lack of funds to put into training (if there was the carrier could not operate). The truth is you just don't like Ryanair.
pajo1981 4 years ago
Ryanair is one of Europe's biggest airlines. They made a 401 million euro profit so far this year allot more than Virgin Atlantic 37 million pound. The money from Ryanair profit goes into buying new aircraft and buying the newest and best 737-800 series flight simulators for assessing each of there pilots. Most of the "Airlines where you pay more" some times don't even make a profit so less money in-fact is spent on maintaining aircraft and pilot training.
