Personally, I think Lang is a stunning drummer. One of the very best out there. However, I do not find his drumming as entertaining as some of the other really technical ones. Say, for example Portnoy or Minnemann, since we're already on the topic of Dream Theater.

This video isn't a great representation of what thomas lang can do. It's enjoyable, but he's not showing any real chops. Lars Ulrich can't read music, yes. And out of the big four of the thrash metal scene, for which metallica is best known, he has the least skill. Comparing MIKE PORTNOY to THOMAS LANG is DUMB. Their styles are too different. They're both incredible, but come on guys, don't COMPARE them. Thomas has amazing chops in many genres and so does Portnoy.

Id rather not either one.

@joebone848 The reason DRUMMERS love portnoy is because of his creativity. Technically he isn't the best and he's not the fastest. It's creativity that's his key. Lang showed in this video that he can play sick drum fills. Once you build skill anyone can do this. Portnoy is known for using many different odd time signatures in his music. Dance of eternity for example. His drumming tends to flow and that has a lot to do with his transitioning between sections. He is the best at that.

I mean come on he goes from a metal style in songs like glass prison to completely progressive in octavarium, just a couple of examples.
