i like how he mixed old tech char cloth with ferrocerium, though the dry grass more than likely started with the ferrocerium, and i like the fact he is fire conscience.
Bushcraft 'masters' ? masters at your age? you only made 1 video and then vanished, is that in case we de-pixelated your face and tried to recruit you into the navy seals to go root out bin laden??
Lol your much better then me at this I just do like 5 strikes and totally ignite it instead of the closing it up method. Then again where I camp it is very windy and the only way I can pull it off is to get a LOT of embers or an actual flame itself.
DONT MAKE A TEPE. if you are in the woods and want to maker fire to sustain your life, dont do that, it burns too fast, it often collapses, the wind can knock it over, and if you just make a little pile of tinder, and ignite it thats just fine. keep adding bigger and bigger sticks untill it burns nice. for an example, watch bear grylls on ultimate survival
Agreed. My friend and I went camping once, and he made a tepee fire...and it fell on our campsite. I had to step out the fire and I said to him "I'm in charge of fire from now on." :)
@Nighthawk961 I find the cabin style fire to work better in terms of long-term structure, but I haven't figured out how to light it easily with a firesteel yet. So far I've found the tepee to be better with a firesteel.
@ShannonBalan umm.. no. it is, in fact char cloth. read the description. and the comments... and watch the video where he holds it up real close and not only shows you that it's char cloth, but also narrates for the extremely bright ones out there, that it is char cloth.
anyway.. bottom line is if you're making a video on how to "start a fire with a firesteel", using accelerants and/or home made materials is a little cheesy, being as you can easily use just the firesteel and natural tinder.
ok watchin you use that firestell was like watchin a monkey fuck a foot ball ... work on it more man just think when you use it your life could depend on it
you don't need char cloth with a swedish fire steel... you dont even need to blow on it. Just get some fine tinder like grass or bark and then shower it with sparks and you should get a flame.
Good video. Preparation is #1 in fire building. You're wasting time and energy if you don't collect enough kindling and tinder to get the fire going. The rule we used to follow was that you needed a hat full of each. Nice work!
we used burn cotten in this video. i got a tin can and put a little piece of a tee shirt in it. than i covered it with aluminum foil and poked a tiny hole. put the tin in the embers of the fire for like 5-10 mins and POW! char cloth
pretty much the beastiest video i've seen. very well done, i like how you explain every detail. i like the teepee fire the best b/c it collapses on its self and the sticks fall so there all overlapping each other and it just makes it real easy to maintain. Awsome vid!
nice 4/5 the only bad part was the way u were strking the firesteel. look at some other vids on how to strike it. may help out and work a bit better but otherwise. nice!
Dont use so much har loth, get a little bit and surround the harloth with some fluffy materials too. There's a lot of fluffy stuff on the ends of some plants.
I gave the vid 4 starts because you took the time to explain that you need to gather all your materials before you make fire. A few critiques, You used the blade of your knife near the tip on your ferro rod. You should have used the part closest to the hilt. You should point the ferro rod right at where you want the sparks to go at the six o clock position of the center of the tinder bundle. With a ferro rod a cotton ball works better than char cloth, which is better suited to flint and steel.
one critique about your post although good. In a survival situation the tip of your knife should be used to strike the steel. it's important to retain a sharp inner blade because that's where you will do the most of your carving in the creation of snares, shelters ect.
@relicright true enough BUT I recommend that approach as it it safer. I don't use my main knife to strike ferro rods. I use the awl on my SAK Farmer model.
@hoosierarcher I mean to say to use the spine of the blade near the handle instead of the edge part. Sorry I guess not enough coffee in me at the time. Sorry.
Great video :)

Whats with the face pixelation? Anyone who knows you will be able to recognize you :P

Well done..Maybe a fixed blade knife would have served you better in a video though...=)

...why did you blur your face out? It saves editing time.

dont use the sharp side of the blade use the and edge of on the back side of the blade. so you dont damage your knife

Well it pays to always have some pre-made tinder on-hand. I prefer cotton balls mixed with petroleum jelly - always works as soon as a spark hits it.

gonna wreck your blade edge m8. Get yourself a good carbon steel fixed blade knife and use the spine, not the edge.
Good video otherwise ;-)
