Mmm, I wonder if Culex is from either the Final Fantasy IV world or the Dissidia world. He is is consumed partially by a crystal mass. Perhaps he's a manikin that escaped or was banished into Mario's world via the Void. Like Gilgamesh, who travels to worlds through the Void since he was banished by Exdeath. Also, both Square Enix (called simply Square then) and Nintendo worked on the game, this theory makes some since.

And I know that Culex is an original character. I'm just making a theory.

@Zuko997 tbh as dumb as this sounds I always thought of Culex as the darkness Cecil abandoned when he became a Paladin. It just felt like it made sense to me for some reason, even moreso now since it's been shown that Cecil's inner darkness is strong enough to manifest itself w/o need of a physical body.

Culex was created specifically for this game, but his design, mannerisms, etc, were all based on the general theme that all Final Fantasy final bosses had (a battlefield void of life apart from it and the heroes, the use of crystals, the overly dramatic introduction dialogue, etc.)
