I grew up playing 80's hair metal. I didn't appreciate BB until I recently tried learning blues. And I have learned it's much easy to rip scales at speed than to "make music" with just a few notes.
Technical proficiency does not equal......... "music".
The only time I can approximate BB's first finger vibrato trill is when I have brand new strings. Once that B string starts to lose it's brightness, it's gets harder and harder.
BB listened to Johnny Hodges of Ellington fame as well. Just goes to show you, ya gotta open your ears and not say "well, I don't listen to that type of music". The more you listen to music with a critical ear, the better you will sound. And try and mimic it all on your horn, guitar, harp, what ever lets you tell your story.
I learned by ear and think its the best way to learn if U want to create your own style, as you peice things together that sound nice not what looks nice on paper, mark knopfler, chet atkins, bb king, dave gilmore, hendrix, say no more.
no bad comments, because everyone loves the king, if it was zaK WYLDE EVERY ONE WOULD BE FLAMING, GOES TO SHOW GUYS LIKE BB BRING THE GOOD OUT IN PEOPLE UNLIKE SOME OTHER WANABEES THAT JUST BRING OUT THE EVIL
It is impossible to acquire this type of talent. No matter how much you practice, this style is COPYRIGHTED, such a distinguished incredible playing style and sound can never be duplicated. Long live BB! Hope I can get tickets to see you one day. (Empties bank savings account)
This guy's the luckiest guy in the world... he's sitting and playing with the KING. too bad he's over analyzing what he's playing, and not "playing what he hears" like the KING.
its funny how he says u r actualy bending from a minor third or wat eva lol thats the problems with heaps of guitest they over think and theorise stuff , bb probs just oplays that bend cause it sound nice
BB clearly learned a lot by ear and that's the key for developing an original style. It's too easy these days with note-for-note transcriptions and slowed-down videos etc. It makes for a lot of great technical players, but not too many originators perhaps?
No one was bending strings like BB before him - creating that singing quality.
@Tbonetardis I agree, when these guys were young they dedicated their lives to music, if you didnt work you got nothing, they were poor. To hear the latest sounds you had to get up go out and listen to it, they scraped around earning next to nothing until they hit the 'big time'. Today you just look on the internet or buy a magazine to learn guitar and its all easy pickins. Guys like BB WANTED to learn and made the effort. I think thats why his heart and soul goes into it.
@Tbonetardis But on the other hand you have so many influences accesible everywhere for everyone. I think the originality will always be there, we are pushing the limits right now
It's not that easy to learn a transcription note by note. if you want to read a jazz solo, you already have to be pretty good or it's a pain and you stop it. listening nowdays is as important as it was back then only that nowdays we have easier access to a greater amount of information (via youtube, the internet,...)
Why would people watch Michael Angelo Batio's videos instead of watching this wonderful man?
Can't get it

Music is always better when it's learned by ear and not repetitive theory
