  • a tip about willow bark, if you don't need the branches you can peel the bark off without killing the bush/tree, the bark will heal and then you could go back to the same bush/tree later in time and get more bark, but if you keep cutting the limbs off you may kill the whole thing or just make it take a really long time/years for it to grow again. willow has many uses please don't kill it if you can help it. :) at least think about it.

  • @NancyToday i think that the bark would shrink more than the "dowels" would

  • When your pieces dry out they will all shrink and be loose. Are you going to dry them before using them? You say they will tighten when they shrink, but the willow will be smaller in diameter and slide around in your bark, eh. Thanks for showing this technique. I usually put the four through cracks in the other four. I'll try this.

  • next time zoom in

  • Nice vid.. Perhaps you could make it more centered so we don't just see your arm instead of the basket in places?

  • knew this was going to be good when i heard the intro song.

  • Could you use cattail rushes instead of the willow bark? I have a pond near me that has willow and cattails, and I have woven mats with the cattails a couple times before.

  • I've made baskets like this using jute twine (and packing twine) I'm sure you can substitute just about any material that's strong and flexible enough

  • shoots as in stuff from the roots? very cool

  • @Firestyle713 eats, shoots and leaves

  • Great vid! I hope to get down our local woods/river bank and get some willow,... 3:13 "you can 'finagle it a little bit..." Brilliant word to remember!! I must look that word up somewhere!! Fantastic! Thanks!

  • cool man! i always wondered how that was done! thanks!

  • Great vid did you mention the type of wood the bark is from?Curious

    Thanks

  • sweet show dude!

  • i love all the great info but wouldn't you want you "personal space" to be more personal? you can hear cars and stuff on the highway.i realize your not in the ditch making a basket or water filter but with all of your preparation you must have a 2nd location to go if needed.a little further of the beaten path.

  • He's done all that. Check out some of the other Videos, you will be amazed.

There is over a thousand things you can learn from this.

Besides this is to demonstrate the making of a basket.

  • Very intresting. I had no idea how to weave a basket.

I knew how to make cordage and make staves, but no idea how to put it together.

    Thank you Dave.

I have found a good use for Willows besides making Charcoal and asperine, making baskets.

I will give it a go this week.

  • nice! this is lower on the list of my survivally stuff, since im only beginning, but cool as hell nonetheless. i wonder how long it took people to figure all this out.....
