John, there's this really great book you should read called Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. This book talks about this idea of all humankind having an innate darkness--that at some level, we're all capable of unspeakable things like murder, rape, etc. If you get the chance, please read it. I think it's a book you'd really enjoy.

This made me think of that Showtime series, Dexter. It's the only crime show that I like. It's got all the elements of a normal crime show: hero who works with the police tracks down and outsmarts the evil serial killers. But he's also a serial killer. He doesn't bring them down the the station, he kills them. It does an excellent job of exploring the evil inside oneself. (Not that these might be linked or any thing... but Dexter is also the only crime show I know of that is based on a book. )
