I've been hoping that someone would post La Gingold singing "Cocaine," even if just the album track itself. It's hilarious, starting with her spoken intro, "Don't you get rather depressed by films about drug addicts? I do. If we have to have films about drug addicts, why can't they be musicals? It would be so much more cheerful!"
I really can't add any more to what the rest of you have already said. Ms. Gingold was EXQUISITE. R.I.P., Hermione. (By the way, for those too young to remember, it's pronounced "her-MY-nee"--when I was a kid, I thought it was pronounced "he-MY-un"!
this is a classic- & about the personal stories- While waiting in line to see the second show , in Paris France at the Moulin Rouge... (1981) i turned and the man behind me with his wife looked like Fish from Barney Miller, I asked him if anyone had ever told him he looked like "FISH" the man never flintched , in a full dead pan he looked at me and said ...Yeah, I get that all the time...He's my Brother ! I was standing next to Abe Vigotta's brother & sister in law, small world
I love these personal stories. I once had the occasion to rent Leslie Caron's house in Burgundy and had to retrieve the keys from her in Paris. We spoke for only a few minutes but I told her how much the world loved her in 'Gigi.' She told me one of her happiest times was working with Hermoine on that charming film. I tell people that story and most don't know her, Leslie Caron, *nor* 'Gigi.' If they brought WML back, who would they get as mystery guests these days? I shudder to think.
Yes, she was class personified -- though the kitchen counters in her mill house had been cut down for her height and my back hurt the entire time I stayed there!
Regal is right!...What a regal lady...What a wonderful voice and accent (wikipedia says thanks to her mom she kept those vocal nodes, giving her that deep voice)...
I heard someone mention the name Hermione today (a character in Harry Potter)...And it made me want to recall...what was that actresses name from some old movies?...I remembered ...but didn't know anything about her...
She is splendid here, and so classy and fun!...
I love the little stories about her here...Thanks!...
Around 1978 I worked as a lift [elevator] operator in a wonderful old fashioned store called ' Civil Service Stores' . In walked an elderly lady and I though I recognised her vaguely . Hesitating, I looked at her and said " You are , [ not quite knowing who] you are famous ! She repied in her deep and amazing voice but witha broad smile . " I can't be that famous if you can't even remember my name ! I'm Hemione Gingold and regally swished out of sight
She was a riot. She once signed an album cover for me (A Little Night Music) in Chappels of Bond st. wearing a rather dodgy wig, a Balenciaca tailleur and large saphire earings. "Why do you want me to deface a perfectly nice record sleeve, young man" She asked me in that incredible voice. I was undone.
Wonderful Posting! I had a friend living in same building as Ms. Gingold and I always regretted not meeting her there. I did meet her in Cherry Grove on Fire Island. She was visiting friends and taking sun on oceanside deck. I was flying a colorful kite on beach and it came perilously close to her as she reclined on a chaise lounge. She was gracious about it and invited us for cocktails!
Why are there no stars like this anymore? Near the end of her life she did a TV commercial for Coco Goya that was funnier and more entertaining then what poses as comedy today.
Not only that, soulierinvestments -- but listen to the audience reaction when Hermione Gingold (!) steps onto the stage!!! I mean, can you imagine your typical studio audience going into hysterics today over, say, Dame Judi Dench or Dame Helen Mirren? *I* would, but I hate to say, I think I'm in the minority on that one. Milley Cirus would rate a better ovation. Sad. Anyway, this was fantastic, and Ms. Gingold was a riot.
Indeed sad. Modern audiences, especially younger audiences, don't get -- as a general observation -- good educations in basic modern culture. Ms Gingold was a rare one of kind.
Thanx for posting this particular example of how television hath changed and not for the better, either. Gingold and Jack Paar and Kilgallen supposedly feuded in this time period (1963), but we'd never know it for all the good manners. Nowadays the producers would put Kilgallen and Gingold together on the same stage and hope that they would crack chairs over each others' heads. What a voice! Tom Poston is too funny -- "Do you have a dimple that we could see?" We should hope.
I knew that Parr and Kilgallen had a feud but I didn't know that Kilgallen and Gingold did as well. Gingold appeared on the Tonight Show with Parr pretty frequently as I understand it.
Was she drunk?

In my low moments I come to YouTube and treat myself to sequences from both this show and You Bet Your Life. I end up feeling much better.

I just discovered a 2nd WML of Ms. Gingold! Both /watch?v=YAM1QBH4QPU and /watch?v=ZFuaajTvwwk lead to that 1959 appearance.

That voice was made to be in the theater and movies! See "I Remember It Well" with Maurice Chevalier, from "Gigi."

Hermione was always one of my favorite performers, but I especially loved her on talk shows when she would just be "herself".

Paris Hilton and other "celebrities." Gross.
You're lucky that you'd gotten to meet Leslie Caron.
