Shenzen is not a small town in China. It was the first "special economic zone" of China. Its strategic location (next to Hong Kong) made it the ideal "gateway" for foreign investors into China.

Around the 80s, China opened up to the world and embraced the free market. Ever since then, Shenzen became a very large city. It used to be a small fishing town. I have family living there. I went there over 18 years ago and it was just grass, swamp, rice paddies, small houses. Today, its BIG lol.

Shenzhen is not a small city. It is the 4th largest city of China, and have 8.5 million residents.
