O'Reilly threw a kick/knee in which I don't blame him after fighting that ape three times before in that series. What would you do?Isn't Gillies known to be Jethro.Well he was more ape than anything.O'Reilly was bloody and Tazzed out and still would not bring a rifle to kill the ape.All he did was knee or kick him.Big deal and fuck the ape O'Reilly won that one clearly.
O'Reilly punched fast to keep Gillies on defense... Gillies won most of the fight in that series... back in those days there a 3 major fighting penalties included an automatic game misconduct, Gillies and O'reilly had already fought twice and O'Reilly a\wanted another go at Gillies, but Al Arbour sent out Gary Howatt who fought and stupid O'Reilly fought Howatt and got the automatic game misconduct....
Clark Gilles may have been THE best hockey fighter ever. He beat the crap out of all the tough guys, like Schultz, Jonathan, O' Reilly and everyone else.
Plus, he wasn't a goon, but a fine hockey player.
@rodfromcranston That's funny that you post that on a video where O'Reilly beat the hell out of Gillies. Plus, if Gillies is your hero I think you should probably learn how to spell his name.
O'Reilly and Gillies 2 wins a piece and a draw AND O'Reilly was the middleweight to Gillies the heavyweight! Clark Gillies biggiset fraud ever elected to the Hockey HOF!

@BoSoxnation1972 O'Reilly was an excellent player for an enforcer, but Gillies was a Hall of Famer. They were in the same league as fighters, but O'Reilly wasn't nearly the player Gillies was. As for the kick - skates have blades on them, that's beyond a cheap shot. Both of them are lucky it didn't really connect.
@3amguitar He wasn't trying to kick him with the blade. He tried to knee him. Huge difference, although it's still a cheapshot. As I said before, it was retaliation for Gillies punching O'Reilly when he was down in their last fight.
And while Gillies is a Hall of Famer, he did play with considerably better linemates. Terry never played with a sniper like Bossy, or a set up guy like Trottier. I agree Gillies was better, but not by a huge margin at all. Gillies best year was 91pts-Terry's 90.

@starry8 Tiger Williams on O'Reilly: "Terry O'Reilly deserves the most respect of all the players, playing hard every shift."

Jimmy Mann on Tiger Williams: "Not the most gifted fighter but tough as nails and would look for any way he could to win a fight. Not unlike Randy Holt."
@BoSoxnation1972 barry beck was a wrestler who would hang on for dear life when he fought true competition (dave brown). He was always grabbing guys legs and going for a takedown when it seemed like the opponent was ready to start throwing punches.
@buttkick22 When Beck fought Brown twice in 85, Beck had a bad shoulder & back, and still held his own. Sure, he wrestled a bit because he couldnt fire rapid punches anymore, but he wrestled Dave down then drilled him twice with a couple of cheapshts.
Watch Beck's fight with Nilan, Jim Nill, Barry Legge, or Bert Wilson when he was younger. Once Beck got a hand free, people grabbed onto him and held on for dear life!
@BoSoxnation1972 He bear hugged behn wilson after deciding he didn't wanna try and actually trade punches, held on to scott stephens pretty good (even tried his usual move of grabbing the shorts and getting the takedown) and there are other examples i don't feel like looking up on a phone right now. I understand that some people would cling to him, but when he fought true tough guys, he was usually the clinger or the first to immediately try a takedown. He was tough, but not THAT tough.
@buttkick22 First off, Beck had already fought Holmgren on that shift, and after that got broken up, Wilson slashed another Ranger who was fighting, and Beck wrestled himself away from a linseman to get down to Wilson. So he was exhausted when he and Wilson went at it. The video showing Beck & Holmgren fighting on the same shift is up on youtube now and is 2:04 long.
Secondly, All I said was that he was more impressive to me than Larry Robinson, whose fighting ability was largely overstated.
@dub16100 ..Jethro was off balance and Taz jumped him, that was the only way he was able to land any shots. He had no business fighting with Jethro...
Boston knew they could not skate with them so they tried to fight. Terry always went after Gillies at the end of Gillies shift. This series put the Islanders on the trail of the Cup and it made the Flyers realize that they could not push the Islanders around the way they did 5 years earlier.
pound for pound? Please dont put Probert into a pound for pound discussion you asshat! Pound for pound implies you can move weightclasses and maintain a winning percentage! George McPhee, Stan Jonathan, PJ Stock, Randy Holt, and very few other's even belong in the convo!
@cptjrkov Watch PJ Stock vs. Stephen Peat. I think you'll enjoy that. Then check out Stan Jonathan vs. Pierre Bouchard, or Jonathan against Behn Wilson.
@cptjrkov Not anymore. Now i get my exercise at Sityodtong, which is an MMA center. We study different styles and have different classes. Brazillian Jujitsu is what we have been revisiting for the past few weeks. They rotate the styles to keep people coming back.
I'm married with 4 kids. Perhaps you should read my profile! I'm a cop with the BPD. I graduated summa cum laude from Boston College with a double major in finance and economics. Actually, I have my degree from MIT in Boston where I studied engineering. I'm from India so my native tongue is Hindi. My mother is from Iran, so we also speak Persian at home. I'm also a navy seal who received the bronze star from president Bush. ROTFLMAO!
hahahahahahahahahahahahah......you are the definition of a keyboard warrior. hes an old man now you fucking idiot. reckless fighter and feared no one. as an old man hed still kick your ass
O'Reilly, not able to win squaring off with Jethro, resorts to hitting him while he was on the ice and then kicking him. Then the homer announcer says, "Never stop O'Reilly: just incredible."
There were comments made about Gillies pummeling OReilly in this historic rivalary. They had the four fights in this series in which the Islanders won in five games. There only lost came when O`Reilly scored a overtime goal in New York to avoid the sweep. Those fights were pretty even.Gillies won two .O`Reilly won two and got knocked out.The Round 0ne fight wasn`t apart of this series.O`Reilly was a warrior and Gillies was deservingly in the hall of famer.Hockey was great back then.
Gillies actually knocked O'Reilly out after he got kicked. Both players were swinging as the refs held both Gillies landed a solid shot. Look at O'Reilly's feet; the dude was limp LOL...
I've got the bosox nation ID'd. Name and address coming shortly. All those Boston guys hate New Yorkers because they are jealous. The Sox have won the last 2 World Series in the duel, yet those pathetic Fenway fans still yell "Yankees Suck". I have traveled all throughout America, Boston is the most immature place I have ever seen. Their mayor can't even speak English, let alone Barney Frank.
Watch Gillies punch O'Reilly while he was down on the ice in their 4th fight dipshit. It was retaliation for a cheapshot Gillies pulled on O'Reilly, and Gillies got the piss beaten out of him! Leave it to a NY jew to run his cock-washer online about something he knows nothing about! Stick to not tipping and eating bagles, jewboy!
Do you know what hatespeech is? Calling someone a jewboy doesnt quite qualify as hate speech! It's barely even a slur, you assclown! Thanks for allowing me to laugh at you again, jewboy! LMFAO
I agree Gillies won 3 of the 5 fights, but the one's that Terry won were far more one-sided. Gillies caught O'Reilly at the end of a long shift in their 4th fight, and punched him while he was down. O'Reilly kept stepping on a glove and tripping, but Gillies was also landing solid shots. This is why O'Reilly kneed him in their 5th fight. Terry ended the rivaly with a win though...and it was a very decisive win at that.
Tough isn't the word for these 2 awsome fighters . But as a lot of people have mentioned i don't think O ' Reilly was the same after these battles. Who would be after 5 great battles. Who else would fight Gillies 5x he was one tough S.O.B
Spadesjim -- I'll go with total idiot. O'Reilly lost some fights, sure, but most came post-1980 and a lot of people don't realize that Terry was never the same fighter after rotator cuff surgery following the '80 playoffs. Before that, O'Reilly lost very few.
Also, it might interest Justice to know that his hero Dave Schultz stated that O'Reilly was the best fighter he ever fought. He said the best were O'Reilly, Gillies, Battleship Kelly, Behn Wilson & Howatt -- in that order.
Punch count: O'Reilly -- 21 punches (and one knee --- obviously, Terry was a little upset with Clark for jumping him and throwing punches while Terry was still on his knees in their previous scrap)); Gillies -- 1 punch thrown over the linesman's shoulder.
As I astutely pointed out on another website, the two losses to O'Reilly in the '80 playoffs were the most one sided beatings of Gillies' career. He probably STILL has nightmares about them!
O'reily proved that gilles was a wimp. Not only could the B's win, they could kick your ass as well. Ask that wimp Mats Sundin what happned or that clown Ron sutter whats happens
Not only could they win???? That didn't win this series! They didn't beat the Islanders in the playoffs a couple of years later either! The Islanders won four straight, beating the B's to win cup number one. When was the last time the B's won a cup? LOL!
Cosmic: I think you're a little confused -- Jonathan and Potvin never fought in this series, nor in their careers. You're probably thinking of Cashman's scrap with Gary Howatt. Howatt was so incensed with Jonathan for pounding Bob Lorimer that he suckered Cashman, who then proceeded to beat Howatt to a pulp. Yeah, that was a great one, alright!
I remember this series. The Bruins first tried to skate with the Islanders and lost the first 2 games. In game 3 they tried to beat them up. That didn't work either and the Islanders went on to win the cup. This series was also highlighted by the Dennis Potvin/Stan Jonathan fight, probably the best I've ever seen. Does anyone remember that fight?
Justice: it's been almost 30 years since this fight and Islander fans still can't get over the savage beating their team took from the Bruins (except for Nystrom, of course). O'Reiily went after Gillies right out of the penalty box in this fight because in the previous scrap, Gillies jumped O'Reilly and started swinging while Terry was on his knees and hadn't even dropped his gloves yet. And Gillies outweighed him by 20-25 lbs! Gillies richly deserved the vicious beating he took in this one!!!
and of course ladies and gentlemen we have our stupid critque, the only human being to put down the great Terry O'Reilly and its just sadning...fuck off Justice fuck off...
I don't need to put down O'Reilly; the fact he lost far more fights than he ever won is his legacy.
You think putting someone down for KICKING someone in a hockey fight is a stupid critique?? I'll kick your teeth right down your fucking throat -- then you can try to gum the word critique... and then I guess you'll have to call me great.... by your logic
JustinLamotheSexy = piece of shit. Don't worry; I'm not the only one putting down O'Reilly -- read the posts, or ask Dave Richter
Round 5: I give this one to O'Reilly but he loses major points for kicking. Anyone who's played hockey - whether roller or ESPECIALLY ice: No matter how pissed-off you are at an opponent: YOU DON'T EVER KICK ANYBODY!! WITHOUT EXCEPTION!! What O'Reilly did was a a major no-no: He broke a cardinal rule. You don't kick anyone when you're on Blade! I was defenceman: In our league, if a player did that to another player, that guy would be banned from the league!
I hate the Bruins more than lard, snot, boogers, sewer shit, clipped toe nails, the green stuff that gets that has been stuck behind your ears too long from not hygienically cleaning yourself properly...
The Bruins suck cock. I hate that team with a passion from day One,32 years ago. I hate them more than even the Flyers. I hate them even more than the Russians. I hate their ugly uniform that if there was no Toilet paper left in the washroom after having diarrea I would wipe the shit off my ass with their uniform. They are nothing but a shittard industrial league team and always will be. They have the ungliest uniform and logo on the face of the earth.
What are you, a Canadiens fan? You couldn't be a Leafs fan! Darryl Sittler - PUSSY! Jason Blake - PUSSY! Norm Ullman - PUSSY! Dave Keon - PUSSY! Johnny Bower - PUSSY! Bob Baun = PUSSY! Tim Horton - PUSSY! Dave Keon - PUSSY! Ron Ellis- PUSSY! Terry O'Reilly - ALL HEART ! B's No 1! Get used to it!
The Bruins were history dipshit. Get over it. Thanks to my buddy Don Cherry TOO MANY MEN ON THE ICE. Fuckin Love It!!!! Hahahahaha. O'Reilly got Gillies 5 years too late and past his prime from all his brain damage from many years of fighting.
I remember that fight like it was yesterday. O'Rielly "kicked" the crap out of Gillies on that one. The only time Terry gave the old knee in the chest manover!
Terry Fairy O'Reilly Girlboy fighter had to kick Clarke Gillies because he could never beat Gillies in a fight like a Man. Just like the other fucktard pussy Dave Shultz. Anyway Gillies beat Fairy O'Reilly 4 Fights to 1 in his career.
are you on crack? O'Reilly kicked the shit out of him in a fight at the Boston Garden 2 nights before this! They fought twice on April 17th at Boston, then twice again on April 19th, 2 nights later during this game! O Reilly pounded him in the first fight in Boston, Gillies won the second one in Boston. Gillies won the first fight in NY, then O'Reilly won the second won that you see here.
Their only other fight was in December of 1977 that Gillies won-Thus he was 3-2, not 4-1 against Terry.
o'reilly beat him like a drum, so hard his gillies's mother's pussy hurt at the end of it! great for whylanders fans to witness the wrath of o'reilly!
This fight started with Gillies on the ice, a major disadvantage for him. This is ironic, as the homer color commentator (Johnny Pearson, I believe) kept saying that O'Reilly would never hit someone when he's down.
are you an idiot? This fight started with both men on the ice! Gillies punched O'Reilly and they both fell down! The reason you see O'Reilly kick at Gillies is payback for Gillies hitting O'Reilly when he was down in the last game 2 nights earlier. Pay attention dipshit! lmao
Now that Being said, Gillies won 3 of the 5 fights. But it's weird because he got absolutely SMOKED in the 2 he lost.
They fought four times in that series 1980 and they split on four decisions. Two in Boston two in New York. The Islanders won the cup that year but their toughest test was against Boston and they became a dynasty because of that.
after this series o'reilly said he was sorry for kneeing clark and that it was uncalled for. i also heard he told sinden that he would never allow himself to to be used by harry in that type of fashion again. i dont think he was the same after that.
This was the last. O'Reilly used to let his opponent get his sweater off, so there would be nothing to grab. O'Reilly was winning, then he knees Gillies, which pissed Gillies off. He throws one punch, and knocks O'Reilly on his ass. Draw.
O reilly what a little homo

Watch Beck's fight with Nilan, Jim Nill, Barry Legge, or Bert Wilson when he was younger. Once Beck got a hand free, people grabbed onto him and held on for dear life!
BoSoxnation1972 1 year ago
@BoSoxnation1972 He bear hugged behn wilson after deciding he didn't wanna try and actually trade punches, held on to scott stephens pretty good (even tried his usual move of grabbing the shorts and getting the takedown) and there are other examples i don't feel like looking up on a phone right now. I understand that some people would cling to him, but when he fought true tough guys, he was usually the clinger or the first to immediately try a takedown. He was tough, but not THAT tough.
buttkick22 1 year ago
@buttkick22 First off, Beck had already fought Holmgren on that shift, and after that got broken up, Wilson slashed another Ranger who was fighting, and Beck wrestled himself away from a linseman to get down to Wilson. So he was exhausted when he and Wilson went at it. The video showing Beck & Holmgren fighting on the same shift is up on youtube now and is 2:04 long.
Secondly, All I said was that he was more impressive to me than Larry Robinson, whose fighting ability was largely overstated.

O'Reilly wins it, but that late shot Gillies got in after he got back up was nasty. Gillies 3-2.
dukhobearl 2 years ago
I agree Gillies won 3 of the 5 fights, but the one's that Terry won were far more one-sided. Gillies caught O'Reilly at the end of a long shift in their 4th fight, and punched him while he was down. O'Reilly kept stepping on a glove and tripping, but Gillies was also landing solid shots. This is why O'Reilly kneed him in their 5th fight. Terry ended the rivaly with a win though...and it was a very decisive win at that.
BoSoxnation1972 2 years ago
I have 2 rounds for O'Reilly, 2 rounds for Gillies, and a close one for Gillies...slight edge to Gillies. Those guys were fuckin' tough!

He said the best were O'Reilly, Gillies, Battleship Kelly, Behn Wilson & Howatt -- in that order.
dempsey00 2 years ago

Punch count: O'Reilly -- 21 punches (and one knee --- obviously, Terry was a little upset with Clark for jumping him and throwing punches while Terry was still on his knees in their previous scrap)); Gillies -- 1 punch thrown over the linesman's shoulder.
As I astutely pointed out on another website, the two losses to O'Reilly in the '80 playoffs were the most one sided beatings of Gillies' career. He probably STILL has nightmares about them!
dempsey00 2 years ago
@dempsey00 behn wilson beating of gillies in 1981 was also pretty brutal.

Not only could they win???? That didn't win this series! They didn't beat the Islanders in the playoffs a couple of years later either! The Islanders won four straight, beating the B's to win cup number one. When was the last time the B's won a cup? LOL!
nyerinmo 2 years ago
The Islanders especially that idiot Mike Bossy couldnt lace Peter Mcnab's skates
ashleybound 2 years ago
Cosmic: I think you're a little confused -- Jonathan and Potvin never fought in this series, nor in their careers. You're probably thinking of Cashman's scrap with Gary Howatt. Howatt was so incensed with Jonathan for pounding Bob Lorimer that he suckered Cashman, who then proceeded to beat Howatt to a pulp. Yeah, that was a great one, alright!
dempsey00 2 years ago
I remember this series. The Bruins first tried to skate with the Islanders and lost the first 2 games. In game 3 they tried to beat them up. That didn't work either and the Islanders went on to win the cup. This series was also highlighted by the Dennis Potvin/Stan Jonathan fight, probably the best I've ever seen. Does anyone remember that fight?
deepcosmiclove 2 years ago
simple math......... Terry O'Reilly = piece of shit
justice008a 2 years ago
Justice: it's been almost 30 years since this fight and Islander fans still can't get over the savage beating their team took from the Bruins (except for Nystrom, of course). O'Reiily went after Gillies right out of the penalty box in this fight because in the previous scrap, Gillies jumped O'Reilly and started swinging while Terry was on his knees and hadn't even dropped his gloves yet. And Gillies outweighed him by 20-25 lbs! Gillies richly deserved the vicious beating he took in this one!!!
dempsey00 2 years ago
and of course ladies and gentlemen we have our stupid critque, the only human being to put down the great Terry O'Reilly and its just sadning...fuck off Justice fuck off...

Don't worry; I'm not the only one putting down O'Reilly -- read the posts, or ask Dave Richter

rd1: draw maybe slight edge Gillies
Rd 2: All Terry

Rd 4: Gillies, questionable start to fight
Rd 5: All Terry (compete with a pissed off knee)
Total for seris: 2-2-1, maye 3-2 for Gillies.......but:
2 convincing wins Terry
1 draw/slight edge Clark, 1 arguable mugging, 1 quick shit fight win
PS--I am a huge Ranger fan with no care to seing this through orange and blue or black and yellow glasses

Final Tally: Gillies 3, O'Reilly 2

are you on crack? O'Reilly kicked the shit out of him in a fight at the Boston Garden 2 nights before this! They fought twice on April 17th at Boston, then twice again on April 19th, 2 nights later during this game! O Reilly pounded him in the first fight in Boston, Gillies won the second one in Boston. Gillies won the first fight in NY, then O'Reilly won the second won that you see here.
Their only other fight was in December of 1977 that Gillies won-Thus he was 3-2, not 4-1 against Terry.

This fight started with Gillies on the ice, a major disadvantage for him. This is ironic, as the homer color commentator (Johnny Pearson, I believe) kept saying that O'Reilly would never hit someone when he's down.
Envelope86 3 years ago
are you an idiot? This fight started with both men on the ice! Gillies punched O'Reilly and they both fell down! The reason you see O'Reilly kick at Gillies is payback for Gillies hitting O'Reilly when he was down in the last game 2 nights earlier. Pay attention dipshit! lmao
Now that Being said, Gillies won 3 of the 5 fights. But it's weird because he got absolutely SMOKED in the 2 he lost.
BoSoxnation1972 3 years ago
