I like this show but I get irritated at these grandiose explanations that really don't seem plausible even to a non-math geek. I dont' even know much about it past calculus, but you can tell it's a lot of flowery language and I agree they do *sound* smart. LOL
Some of you are misunderstanding the use of applied mathematics. Please do read Devlin&Lorden's "The Numbers Behind Numb3rs - Solving Crime with Matjematics" - written by a real university professor of mathematics who's been solving crimes for the real FBI. Just read it and don't be judgmental until you do that.
That was absolutely absurd and was not grounded in reality in any way. It was meant to sound smart to anyone who isn't smart enough to understand what he was saying. Yes, spiders do build their webs based on based on weather conditions and "other variables". But to portray that as even a half decent analogy for criminal theory is a joke. "Overlapping webs = 2 different groups of criminals" LMAO.
This is exactly why I disliked this series by simply seeing the ads. Trust me, I love maths, I study it, but this is just pointlessly throwing around some quasi-formal jargon and showing off completely irrelevant formulas.
Anyone would have simply said: "my maths weren't wrong, my assumptions were; there are two groups of criminals, not just one". End of speech. Especially 'brilliant mathematicians' don't have to use a computer to show pretty images of spider webs to make their point clear.
I just love having a show which actually at least tries to explain and incorporate math in it. Call me a freak, but math is enjoyable. Unfortunately, it doesn't love me back. I think that their explanations and obviousness since first season are growing. Which is actually a bad thing. It's making it look more stupid than influencing. They're doing the opposite of what they want done. Sutle math is better than hard core and puffed up. It's a show. Keep it simple. ..
This show is the worst! Trying compare a spider webs algorithms with a specific set of murders is full of crap!
Next thing you know this show will equate the Zeta theory with Jack the Rippers slayings. An anomaly.
