  • Lovely groove you've got going there, a real pleasure to hear you play - and to learn of the Khene!

  • More videos, please! Or better, a studio album! This stuff is fantastic! I love how you can change the timbre of drones and essentially accompany yourself. The overall effect is perfect for Irish trad.

  • can you do lessons - i have a kaen - but no idea how to play it - i can get lessons of thai people here but there not reliable - im living in kildare!

  • incredible. i had never even heard of the khene. sounds great and suits the tunes. keep posting, thx

  • wow! my uncle is a khene master im sure youve seen his videos. i find it soooooo amazing that you can master playing this instrutment! kudos to you!!!!!! oh btw my uncle is the blind khene master who wears the darks shades! =) keep up the good work!

  • I've had one of these hanging on the wall for years, didn't know what it was called, never figured out how to play it. You couldn't do a short close-up tutorial, could you? Thanks and great playing.

  • Is there anyway to buy one of these instruments online? I really don't feel like flying to Thailand just to get it.

  • Which key is your khene and who did you purchase it from? Thanks.

  • this Khene is some where near Fmajor...not in concert pitch so i only play this one at home... i bought this khene from a Maker just outside na wa village Nakom panon...Thailand...

  • Class stuff!

How do you go about buying one of these?.. Order from Laos/thailand?..

  • they've got decent ones on ebay in different keys. order from pong long dork yah band

  • Great stuff! I love the effect.

  • How about the first reel being The Holly Bush. Interesting video. Is this realy an instrument. well done.

  • That is the most bizarre instrument I have ever seen

  • better playing than a lot of fiddlers! well done!

  • This is without doubt THE raddest thing I have ever seen. G'won!

  • Brilliant stuff, man. Great lift as jkennedy says. You're ready to take the "other instrument" category at the Fleadh, if they still have those that is.

I play pipes/flute/fiddle and always loved the khene after hearing a very old recording of it on one of the Secret Museum CDs. Might have to get one now. Fun Fact: uilleann pipemaker DM Quinn is an expert on the sheng, they say.

  • i i met DM Quinn in malby last summer... though didnt hear him playin sheng.. he said he plays classical on it.. as its chromatic... wud love to hear it ,,

  • Dan, this is great stuff. The khene lends itself beautifully to Irish reels, the drones....magic. Not only that, you're a great player. Are you doing any gigs, sessions and/or recording?

    Best wishes,

    Miriam Kavana

  • hi Miriam..im playing a weekly session in tullamore,, so if you make it to the fleadfh this year we ll have a tune..are you based in holland..?whats it like there for sessions,,?

  • Hi Dan, I used to go to the fleadh and the Willie week, particularly when I was living in Ireland in the 80's. Moved to London in '85 and didn't go that often anymore... it's been a few years now! I'm in Holland since 2004 - the few sessions I've seen here didn't tickle me that much somehow... miss a good session though! Who knows, it's a small world and we'll have a tune yet somewhere along the line : )

  • Found this through a link on Mudcat. Excellent stuff, well done!

  • HOW??? Wonderful, love it!!

  • You can find Ger the Rigger on YouTube, including a harmonica version, and the ABC for it on TheSession. It's probably Scottish originally ("rigger" meant "con artist").

  • Go deas! Very nice!

  • To support another comment, not only are you playing a traditional music of one culture on the traditional instrument of another, you're playing the tune w/some very lovely lift and rhythm. Fair play! Maith thú!

  • hi dad found u hahhahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahahaha lol

  • :O That was awesome - I never knew an instrument like this existed, lol. It looks complex to play

  • dude, the cool thing about this is that you're not just playing tunes on an unorthodox instrument, you actually have a really nice lift as well! i can't see your face well enough to tell if you i know you or not...

  • That was so friggin cool.

  • zaujimave:D

  • Can I put in a request for the tune 'Ger the Rigger'? I can imagine that it would sound fabulous on the khaen. I assume the instrument is played using a circular breathing technique?

  • not sure if i know that tune.. is it a reel or jig, ect,,?its not circular breathing.the same note it produced by blowing and drawimg air. so if you stop any hole continuously whilst playing a melody it adds a drone..!

  • were u at the willie clancy week this year?!

  • yes ..im there every year for a few days.. great fun..i have a short clip of a harp session on my channel.. were you there?its quite dark so hard to see whos who..!

  • yea i was there... Im d one with blonde hair sitting next 2 cathy!!i remember you played a few tunes at our wee harp session!!Im glad some1 got videos from it :D:D

  • bravo !!

  • First tune is the holly bush reel

Btw, I met you at the fleadh!! You rock!!

  • thanks redburnana,,does it also go by the name: the road to ballymack..?anyway,, its a nice tune...

  • I dont think so..... Its called finbarr dwyers matt the thrasher, but not road to ballymack, sorry.

Still, deadly tune, my bro played it at the fleadh last year.

  • what ie heck is that thing looks like two peices of wood stuck together

  • it is,, as the title suggests , a khene or khaen,,,a bamboo free reed instrument from laos and north east thailand that is the ancestor of all westenrn free reed instruments such as accordian, harmonica concertina ect...

  • well i met a man yrs ago.....he does like you english man lives in ireland.we jammed together 2 khaens .mixed well. i play a bit of tabla and udu. but my friend is better on tabla.

  • jays this stuff is class! That thing is almost cooler than my uilleann pipes ;P. I would love to hear you play at a session or something, you'd stand out I'm sure. Is the khene in any other key than F?
