More videos, please! Or better, a studio album! This stuff is fantastic! I love how you can change the timbre of drones and essentially accompany yourself. The overall effect is perfect for Irish trad.
can you do lessons - i have a kaen - but no idea how to play it - i can get lessons of thai people here but there not reliable - im living in kildare!

I've had one of these hanging on the wall for years, didn't know what it was called, never figured out how to play it. You couldn't do a short close-up tutorial, could you? Thanks and great playing.
this Khene is some where near Fmajor...not in concert pitch so i only play this one at home... i bought this khene from a Maker just outside na wa village Nakom panon...Thailand...
Brilliant stuff, man. Great lift as jkennedy says. You're ready to take the "other instrument" category at the Fleadh, if they still have those that is.
I play pipes/flute/fiddle and always loved the khene after hearing a very old recording of it on one of the Secret Museum CDs. Might have to get one now. Fun Fact: uilleann pipemaker DM Quinn is an expert on the sheng, they say.
i i met DM Quinn in malby last summer... though didnt hear him playin sheng.. he said he plays classical on it.. as its chromatic... wud love to hear it ,,
Dan, this is great stuff. The khene lends itself beautifully to Irish reels, the drones....magic. Not only that, you're a great player. Are you doing any gigs, sessions and/or recording?
hi Miriam..im playing a weekly session in tullamore,, so if you make it to the fleadfh this year we ll have a tune..are you based in holland..?whats it like there for sessions,,?
Hi Dan, I used to go to the fleadh and the Willie week, particularly when I was living in Ireland in the 80's. Moved to London in '85 and didn't go that often anymore... it's been a few years now! I'm in Holland since 2004 - the few sessions I've seen here didn't tickle me that much somehow... miss a good session though! Who knows, it's a small world and we'll have a tune yet somewhere along the line : )
You can find Ger the Rigger on YouTube, including a harmonica version, and the ABC for it on TheSession. It's probably Scottish originally ("rigger" meant "con artist").
To support another comment, not only are you playing a traditional music of one culture on the traditional instrument of another, you're playing the tune w/some very lovely lift and rhythm. Fair play! Maith thú!
dude, the cool thing about this is that you're not just playing tunes on an unorthodox instrument, you actually have a really nice lift as well! i can't see your face well enough to tell if you i know you or not...
Can I put in a request for the tune 'Ger the Rigger'? I can imagine that it would sound fabulous on the khaen. I assume the instrument is played using a circular breathing technique?
not sure if i know that tune.. is it a reel or jig, ect,,?its not circular breathing.the same note it produced by blowing and drawimg air. so if you stop any hole continuously whilst playing a melody it adds a drone..!
yes ..im there every year for a few days.. great fun..i have a short clip of a harp session on my channel.. were you there?its quite dark so hard to see whos who..!
yea i was there... Im d one with blonde hair sitting next 2 cathy!!i remember you played a few tunes at our wee harp session!!Im glad some1 got videos from it :D:D
it is,, as the title suggests , a khene or khaen,,,a bamboo free reed instrument from laos and north east thailand that is the ancestor of all westenrn free reed instruments such as accordian, harmonica concertina ect...
well i met a man yrs ago.....he does like you english man lives in ireland.we jammed together 2 khaens .mixed well. i play a bit of tabla and udu. but my friend is better on tabla.
jays this stuff is class! That thing is almost cooler than my uilleann pipes ;P. I would love to hear you play at a session or something, you'd stand out I'm sure. Is the khene in any other key than F?
Lovely groove you've got going there, a real pleasure to hear you play - and to learn of the Khene!

Is there anyway to buy one of these instruments online? I really don't feel like flying to Thailand just to get it.
