Got it a bit mixed up. The poppy is to signify the British and Colonial Soldiers who fought during WWI on the fields of Europe's battlegrounds. When the Battle Of The Somme was fought and eventually won by the British at a tremendous cost of life, the corpses rotted into the ground and the wealth of nutrients that were released into the soil caused poppies to spread across vast areas of the battleground. The poppies were a symbol to remember those who fought that day.
