Thank you for this and the 1st tutorial. It's been years since I last welded. I am also teaching my 11 year old son to weld and will have him watch these as well. Thanks
wow!!! great video. All the other guy teaching how to weld (or should i say trying to) by video should watch this video first and take some pointers. thanks. If you have more tips about mig welding please keep those videos coming.
Great instructional video. This is so much better than most other "how to" videos. He teaches you about the equipment, safety, techniques, how its supposed to go when done right and also what it looks and sounds like when the welding is not going right. Much appreciated.
This is excellent instruction. Also, good camera work and editing. Audio as good, scene is well lit. Everything it takes to not distract from what is being taught. Thanks so much for producing this.
whats good about this is he dosnt lay down some beautiful bead he shows you the steps to take to get there. hes not like well this is how you weld, draw circles then there yea go perfect bead. he explains whats behind it

@mike19692008 there is alot more splatter with Mig welding then stick. but his also still running little cold. . U can buy a splatter spray for your tips are a grease witch he dosint mention on this video. this would reduce the splater and wont need to clean your nosiel as much also.
Not sure what gas hes useing . 100% Argon would splater more then a 75% argon and 25% Co2 tank witch is more recomended for steel.
the arc sound is wright gas is set properly 20cfm to 30cfm

Not making fun of you but... who pre heats 1/8 mild pipe and square tube? I weld stuff that's 22 gauge to 1/2 without pre heating... I just crank my machine high and wire speed than sometimes push the puddle
BY FAR, these two videos are the best I've found on YouTube for beginning MIG welding. I feel like I have a good understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing now...... Time to practice! Thank you!
This is the most informative info I've found so far, including the so called training I've been getting at uni. Thank you for putting this up. A great starting point! more please?
@Azsholebynature True, Im in 8th grade and i started welding for our science project about 5 weeks ago and i already love it and (i think) i make pretty good welds
How is this advanced.....I weld for a living and this is a joke. Even sounds like shit. For how old you are you should be doing much better then that you dont even have any waves in your weld u have to be kidding me.
@Azsholebynature there are 2 vids. one basic, basic. then a little more into basic mig use. great free resource. Not meant for pros, obviously. But no joke, its good stuff for people trying to learn. Have some respect.
@elvis459 No, you may attach the electrode directly to your work piece, but make sure that there is good electrical contact, meaning no dirt or paint.
I've been MIG welding for a couple of years now...and not doing it as well as I could. Thanks for your easy-to-follow tutorials in Parts 1 and 2. Gotta get a self-igniting propane unit to start preheating. Thanks again. Some of my work can be seen at my website (jerry r martin do com without the spaces, of course.).

Push the mig weld dont pull it. If you pull the mig weld you're going to get cold lap where the weld will not penetrate the metal and will sit on the surface
he is a complete idiot! Lets do some ADVANCED with a 110 v welder, please. lets see some over head welding. maybe some horizontal welder. anybody can weld flat only doing a 1inch bead.
Your second bead is ok, with the exception of the crater at the end. It is also more important for the machine to cool down after welding than to 'warm up' before welding as the electrical load creates heat within the machine. There really is no 'warm up' period for a welding machine. You can also control the application of heat without pre-heating your peace. Most welders are not looking for the 'roll of dimes' bead with the MIG process, but a 'stitch' bead will create the effect.
good vid, i like this, lot better than some of the pompous a holes that think they know everything. nice that someone takes the time to actually explain things.
This guy is a complete Idiot. you shouldn't take off your gloves everytime you get a chance, unless you're doin with your project or taking a break for a long while, don't risk getting burned. and No....you DON"T have to cut your wire to a fresh start everytime. it's just messy, you're gonna have to clean all that up and over time, copper gets extremely expensive. it's actually better if you just arc off to some scrap metal and have a nice HOT red tip.
@syvo1186 he's not a complete idiot. LMAO but I agree that arcing off to scrap is the way to go. Besides, who has pliers often enough to go through that every 5 minutes? It's better to just master the obligatory arc-off-to-something-on-table technique.
@syvo1186 actually it is better to trim your wire. it will allways give you a cleaner start. not to mention that if you have to much stick out your more likely to bump the application. and gloves are important, but the whole point of welding is being aware.
@syvo1186 The wire is not copper. It is copper coated steel. If you were welding copper you would weld with copper filler, but not with the MIG process. Copper welding would require DC, electrode negative, TIG welding...As would Titanium, with TI fill rod, Stainless with stainless fill rod, etc. Aluminum and Magnesium require AC TIG as alternating current cleans the material as you weld, but don't try to weld magnesium - once exposed to oxygen it may burn uncontrollably.
first off, i would hate to have to pay for all the wire that this guy is wasting, dont clip the dumb wire, just let go of the trigger, and pull the gun back, dont let the wire keep coming out. as for the heat build up, he hast been welding near long enough to get the tip hot. that is where tip control comes into play. as far as the safety, welder equals heat, figure it out, ya get burned your dumb. good video for beginners to watch and get tips, but not the best ive seen.
I really wonder where this guy learned to weld. At 5:42 when he says he let the wire get too hot, that wasn't "heat build up" that was caused by him pulling back on the gun before releasing the trigger. The resistance of the wire caused it to heat up. I highly suggest looking for information on MIG welding from another source because this guy is way out in left field. I'm sure he is an excellent instructor in whatever other classes he teaches, but as far as welding goes he has a lot to learn.
@chimera91977 Yeah, and that second bead he did before, the end of it looks like he blew a hole in the metal at the end of the bead. Has the amps too high.
He is also stuck on trimming the wire after every weld, what a waste. You're supposed to let off the trigger then quickly lift the head away from the metal so it always ends up 1/2 to 1 inch long, no trimming needed.
@3star2nr Yeah, but that part didn't have a spec of rust on it... and using a propane torch to preheat tubing? Tubing heats up so quickly when welding, why would you need it?
I can see preheating caste iron because of the thickness but not something that thin...
Hey I was wondering about the angles of the torch. I have experience using a arc welder. Now with arc welding you have to do several different angles to manage the heat properly, and was wondering with mig is that the same or are there less need for a bunch of different positions.
Usually there's no need for a lot of different angles when welding with slick wire or flux core. Once you've got some practice you'll know what angle to weld at allowing you to see the "pool". You can manage your heat through voltage and the speed of your weld passes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
oh, and this is not MIG welding. MIG means metal inert gaz. You usually use Argon with 18% CO2 to weld steel, so it's an active gaz. This is MAG, metal active gaz welding. Damn N0000bs! And of course it's NOT advanced. This is a bloody beginner, he shouln't even try to teach other people how to weld.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me (us). Great video.

And it helps out a lot when you mirror welding

Both hands some time you you have to to get to something in a bad spot that can only b welded that way
218david 1 year ago
is it good to learn how to use both hands, or to weld with just one hand?

he is a complete idiot! Lets do some ADVANCED with a 110 v welder, please. lets see some over head welding. maybe some horizontal welder. anybody can weld flat only doing a 1inch bead.
threephasesponge 1 year ago
@threephasesponge Oh shut up.
When I was trained, I learned on small stuff first. Just like EVERY WELDER!
seans63lemansSD 1 year ago 3
Your second bead is ok, with the exception of the crater at the end. It is also more important for the machine to cool down after welding than to 'warm up' before welding as the electrical load creates heat within the machine. There really is no 'warm up' period for a welding machine. You can also control the application of heat without pre-heating your peace. Most welders are not looking for the 'roll of dimes' bead with the MIG process, but a 'stitch' bead will create the effect.

He's an excellent teacher. The way he showed the steps he went through to get a good bead near the beginning was very helpful.

This guy is a complete Idiot. you shouldn't take off your gloves everytime you get a chance, unless you're doin with your project or taking a break for a long while, don't risk getting burned. and No....you DON"T have to cut your wire to a fresh start everytime. it's just messy, you're gonna have to clean all that up and over time, copper gets extremely expensive. it's actually better if you just arc off to some scrap metal and have a nice HOT red tip.
syvo1186 1 year ago
@syvo1186 he's not a complete idiot. LMAO but I agree that arcing off to scrap is the way to go. Besides, who has pliers often enough to go through that every 5 minutes? It's better to just master the obligatory arc-off-to-something-on-table technique.
numair23 1 year ago
@syvo1186 actually it is better to trim your wire. it will allways give you a cleaner start. not to mention that if you have to much stick out your more likely to bump the application. and gloves are important, but the whole point of welding is being aware.
dlewjr 1 year ago
@syvo1186 The wire is not copper. It is copper coated steel. If you were welding copper you would weld with copper filler, but not with the MIG process. Copper welding would require DC, electrode negative, TIG welding...As would Titanium, with TI fill rod, Stainless with stainless fill rod, etc. Aluminum and Magnesium require AC TIG as alternating current cleans the material as you weld, but don't try to weld magnesium - once exposed to oxygen it may burn uncontrollably.

at 24:30-24:45, am i blind or the table is.... ummm, melting in a spot to the left of the iron plate, under the square profile?
stalkersas 1 year ago
You said 1/4" plate that you are welding!? Well with that machine that you are using it would probably do you some good by doing 3 things.
1) Check your heat settings on your machine, if it is up all the way, then perform steps 2 & 3.
2) V grove both pieces down by 1/2 the thickness of the plate.
3) Preheat your material a little with a propane torch, followed by welding your 2 pieces together. You may have to do 2-3 passes.
I hope this helped any!

first off, i would hate to have to pay for all the wire that this guy is wasting, dont clip the dumb wire, just let go of the trigger, and pull the gun back, dont let the wire keep coming out. as for the heat build up, he hast been welding near long enough to get the tip hot. that is where tip control comes into play. as far as the safety, welder equals heat, figure it out, ya get burned your dumb. good video for beginners to watch and get tips, but not the best ive seen.

love the way he turns machine off when finished, lucky he wasnt welding for to long
rachie5585 1 year ago
I really wonder where this guy learned to weld. At 5:42 when he says he let the wire get too hot, that wasn't "heat build up" that was caused by him pulling back on the gun before releasing the trigger. The resistance of the wire caused it to heat up. I highly suggest looking for information on MIG welding from another source because this guy is way out in left field. I'm sure he is an excellent instructor in whatever other classes he teaches, but as far as welding goes he has a lot to learn.
chimera91977 1 year ago
@chimera91977 Yeah, and that second bead he did before, the end of it looks like he blew a hole in the metal at the end of the bead. Has the amps too high.
He is also stuck on trimming the wire after every weld, what a waste. You're supposed to let off the trigger then quickly lift the head away from the metal so it always ends up 1/2 to 1 inch long, no trimming needed.

I LOVE the stack of dimes finish it looks soo awesome
3star2nr 1 year ago
Always cleana part before welding it. Rust contains oxygen which gets released during the welding process.
3star2nr 1 year ago
@3star2nr Yeah, but that part didn't have a spec of rust on it... and using a propane torch to preheat tubing? Tubing heats up so quickly when welding, why would you need it?
I can see preheating caste iron because of the thickness but not something that thin...
junkymagi 1 year ago
Great presentation! Thanks.
wigglegiggle99 1 year ago
Hey I was wondering about the angles of the torch. I have experience using a arc welder. Now with arc welding you have to do several different angles to manage the heat properly, and was wondering with mig is that the same or are there less need for a bunch of different positions.
wolfman852010 1 year ago
@wolfman852010
Usually there's no need for a lot of different angles when welding with slick wire or flux core. Once you've got some practice you'll know what angle to weld at allowing you to see the "pool". You can manage your heat through voltage and the speed of your weld passes.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
oh, and this is not MIG welding.
