I saw Durbano here in KC when he played for the pitiful Scouts. He was a good defenseman when he put his mind to it, unfortunately he let his temper get the best of him. I remember a KC-Flyers game when he put it to Dave Shultz. I'm glad to hear he found peace at the end.
I would just like to clear a few things up about my Father. He did not die a brokendown drunk. He found peace and solitude in Yellowknife, and lived the best years of his life up there. I know that my father wasn't a great Hockey Player, but he played the game the only way he knew how too.
Dont listen to these judgemental sofa jockey's. I bet none of them even played competitive hockey in there lame ass lives. Your dad played in the greatest league in the world. Not to mention in an era when it was extremely difficult to even make the show. Respect and may your Dad R.I.P.
Hey, Steve Durbano was a player! He made the 'Big Show', which a hell of a lot of players never, ever do. Of course he was a player on the edge -- but consider the day and age he played. RIP Steve!
I've been watching hockey all my life and I have to say I've never seen a more hard fought and entertaining hockey game as an early 70's Blues/North Stars nationally televised playoff game.....and your father was right in the middle of the non-stop action! He was a force in that wild and thrilling game and to me he is a 70's hockey icon! I was young at the time and that game turned me into a hockey fan forever. Your father was a heck of a hockey player... Steve Durbano you are truly missed!
Wearing the Bluenote made Steve Durbano one of my heroes when I was a kid... Like all of us, he wasn't perfect, but he was willing to stand up for his team and his friends... What more can you say about a fella than that?
@kariannd What is the definition of "a great hockey player" anyway? For me, a great hockey player is one who brings it every night and leaves it all on the table. He (or she) doesn't have to be a fifty goal scorer, etc. Many of my favorite players will never appear in the record books. Be proud!
Durbano was a psycho but couldn't fight worth a lick. Schultz destroyed him one Sunday afternoon in Philly and later in the game Bob "The Hound" Kelly pummelled him after Durbano high-sticked the Flyers trainer and cut him. One night at the Omni (Atlanta) he went berserk and got thrown out of the game, and then came running back onto the ice in his socks to attack the Flames goalie Phil Myre. One of the most entertaining players of all time
Anyone know what year this was? I'd guess 1974 or early 1975 because Vadnais is still on the club.
