@wesgriff1 He probably came up with peacock because of the Peacock Jumping Spider. The peacock jumping spider has a really crazy dance and visual display. Probably is considered to be the most facinating of all courtship displays when it comes to jumping spiders.
@born2sparklee the scientist said she was anaesthetized, but the final answer would have to come from the iddy biddy spider herself - still I tend to believe him, since he said he loved those animals, so he will try to study them, inflicting as little harm as possible.
amazing video. most people think of spiders creppy but they are beautiful and are important part of our ecosystem. knowing their types etc might help us learn. WIDOW is one I fear. How about you all ?
my gosh, so interesting! :) It's amazing that they can hear spiders vibrations, and they spiders vibrations and leg movements sound like a thunder! So loud! Yet we with our ears cannot hear a thing! Technology is becoming real pain in the ass, don't you thinks so? I mean...
question, most male animals in the wild are not long term mates with the females, meaning they dont get lots of long term sex like human males that are in long term relationships with females, so then, WHY do male animals, spiders, work so hard to get laid? when its just "bam" and leave?
there's no goal of evolution. it's just the combination of mutation and natural selection. not the most advanced, but those best suited to their environments.
If he didn't put on a good enough show, he wouldn't have proved that he was healthy and genetically suitable mating material, and she would not mate with him. Natures way of ensuring that only well adapted animals get to breed. Genetically flawed males may not have the energy or ability to dance properly and would be eliminated from the breeding pool.
not so different from what human males at clubs do. find techniques to dance closer and get with a female...lol funny how similar this is..

There's a lot of words I'd use to describe jumping spiders. Peacocks just isn't one of them.

@wesgriff1 : I think he was referring to their dramatic, polychromatic, opalescent and colorful patterns.

They work so hard because they're genetically programmed to do so. Behaviors such as this one are millions of years in the making.

Evolution. Meaning survival of the fittest. The goal of evolution is to spread the most advanced and qualified set of genes.
