Just follow your nose! That's how the squirrel finds it's food! It's not trying to waste time remembering colors and shapes! There's no doubt that a squirrel is very intelligent, but this is a very poor experiment and only a human would consider, "doing things the hard way", as a sign of intelligence. Most of us humans are VERY stupid.

Oh, but the kid conducting the experiment is a clever boy for trying to study the squirrel in his own way. Good for him. In time, he'll know more about squirrels.

I house i lived in near the ocean in canada. i had squirrels ever year when the walnuts came out. they worked in a tem of 4. there was one brought them from the tree to another who ran across the top of fence to another, that would then take to there stock pile for the winter.they did it every year.
