There's an old RCA recording of this with Leonard Warren and Nan Merriman that also works at this level. I agree with ShawDAMAN on the older Gilda sound and Merriman (I believe that's the right spelling) sounds so young and innocent.
The most moving version of this I've seen. Gobbi is wonderful. I'm not really a fan of this opera but I must say that Pagliughi sounds perfect here. She SOUNDS like a young crying girl! Too many Gilda's have sounded like 40 year old women. 40 year old women who sing well, yes, but it just isn't convincing. ;-)
Gobbi, il più grande e umano Rigoletto. Nessun baritono ha mai interpretato con tale voce e dolore l'angoscia di un padre. Grazie incommensurabile Tito.
I gather that just as an actress is acting the part of Lina Pagliughi, that someone else is doing the same with the voice of Tito Gobi. Am I right? If so, who is that actor. Can someone tell me?
How is that possible? How was this video made, then? The woman singing the part of Lina Pagliughi is definitely an actress, lip-synching the voice of Pagliughi. But never mind. Can you or someone tell me if the entire opera is available in this version?
I don't have any sure knowledge, but here's how it is possible; First they recorded the opera, and Pagliughi sang the role of Gilda, and Gobbi the role of Rigoletto. Then they filmed it, but though he was outwardly suitable for the role of Rigoletto, she wasn't considered as suitable for the role of Gilda (remember, in act 3 Gilda's body was wrapped in a sack, and Rigoletto carries it on his back, and starts to suspect something, because it was too light), so she was replaced with an actor.
Purtroppo questo è il film, in cui la musica è velocizzata parecchio e molti attori (tranne il grande Gobbi, ovviamente) non sono neppure cantanti. Per godersi il Rigoletto di Gobbi, bisogna recuperare quantomeno il disco...
I really do feel sorry, however, for ricordisimo. As a professional singer who has worked with some of the finest singers and teachers in the field, I must tell you that if you are looking for something more satisfying than this, you will always find yourself, then, in a sick, musical hell, because, baby, it don't get better than this!
To Goldie, 796824 and CrisRomeos, I am right with you with your comments. In an age when an overly forced vocal production was not the norm, such clarity and sweetly sinewous (sp?) singing was possible, especially from singers who were the best in the field, singing at their apex.

Or was it Erna Berger?

Can anyone find the lyrics to this?
One of the most beautiful duets I've ever heard btw.

@Jextxadore Just search "libretto rigoletto" in google, then in website "librettidopera" you may find the whole libretto.

There is no actor. Gobbi acts and sings.

If there is a God, his name could be Verdi.
S'il y a un Dieu, son nom pourrait être Verdi.

This video, which I have recently discovered, makes me cry every time. And I'm not a fruit, neither. I'm a macho type guy.

Estoy de acuerdo con thintieguy. No he oido otro Rigoletto mejor. Si usted conoce otro mejor debe consignarlo aqui.
