Wood is use to protect F1 car because it can deformate and not to demage track (asphalt). Imagine some steel element drag on track over 200 km/h (125 mph, explanation to ppl who dont need eny other thing exept NASCAR in life)
Yes it is, the designed to decrease ground effect, introduced as a emercany rule after senna and ratzenberger died in san marino. Although the particular crashes had nothing to todo with it, since the particular corners would still be full throttle so they changed the track also.
yees......and also that wood is measured after each race by the officials..and if it is any thinner than the rules specify..the car is disqualified or goes under investigation
@machineman9 the wood plank works as an insulating element, so when the car touches the ground it prevents any short circuit that can harm any electrical component in the car
toyota only wants to be no.1,how much it costs is irelevent.profits of 22billion dollars in 2006. toyota has more money than all the teams put together.but maybe they entered f1 a bitt late in life...

Actually, that's right... They use a wooden plank supplied by the FIA. This plank gets ground down any time the car scrapes and helps the FIA enforce the ride height restrictions. One might suggest at least reading the relevant section of the F1 website before you post lest you show yourself to be ill-informed fanboys.

Isn't the wood to stop the car getting too low, thus violating rules?

Toyota is pulling the plug if the f1 team doesn't perform to the level they expect. Toyota has spent $3,000,000,000.00 since they entered f1.
