@jwr257 This heatsink uses heat pipes - these take the heat away from the small square over the CPU and spread it around and over the heatsink blades (fins). As long as you have another fan in the system to move the air around (the power supply's fan or even the fan on the CPU) the fins on the video card heatsink will get cooler air around them and will get cooler and the whole process is repeated See en wikipedia org / wiki / Heat_pipe for better explanation
Hey I was wondering if you could help me out. I have the same cooler, and I installed everything but the VRM heatsinks onto my 4870 1gb card. The temps have not lowered. MSG me if you can, thanks.
@capman911 As I'm from Romania, I used Romanian stores... you can get them usually from online stores aimed at modding but they're also available on newegg, Amazon (com, co uk , de, fr - try the one closer to you), just search for "vga heatsink" .. there's also dealextreme com (cheap but wouldn't trust their tape)... in the worst case try eBay. The sticky thermal tape usually comes already applied on the heatsinks.
i'm planning to take off my stock heatsink to reapply thermal paste on the core. do you think the sticky tapes are reusable or do i have to have new ones ready right after i take off the heatsink.
had my card for 2 years now i believe, the temps are idling at 60+ celcius. probably hitting 90+ on load so i'm getting worried.
@Bobobearx Changing the paste won't do much difference, just a few C degrees. The card is by design hot (the fan is kept at low spin) and is tested to run for hours at 100C and over, and will throttle itself down at around 105C.
I think you just need to take off the plastic cover (see the end of this video) and use some air spray (can) or a straw to blow some air and take out the dust from inside the copper "tunnels"
No point taking off the cooler unless you get the Accelero kit and install it.
@nikokapo That's how I use it, without any fans on it. I just have an Antec TriCool fan at the lowest speed on the side panel - didn't clean the dust from it in months and it's 43C idle, about 58-60C in full load. Very low compared to 80 C idle , 95+ in full load with dirty stock cooler and much lower than what the 4850 processor was designed for.
Put it on today, my max load is 52c under major stress testing (furmark). I have an antec 900 case and a vga pci-slot cooler with dual 80mm fans that I will use to pull the heat off the pipes :). This makes a HUGE difference. I was honestly amazed. Great product, don't really need the fans prob.
Congratz bro :)
nice video.
keep it up

Where can I buy the heat sinks and tape to apply to some of my chips that get hot?

Can you use the 4850 passively with just the Accelero?

Do you think I should replace the thermal paste on the heat sink and use AS5 instead?

thanks for your vids ,
i'm going to do the same on my hd4850 now thanks to your vid .

Great tutorial. I did the same thing with my 4850.
Probably I'll upgrade to a 5850.. do you think the Accelero will go with it? Because I believe they've the same architecture.

does it go to the Hd2600Pro?

@speakers11223
I don't know why you'd want to cool that as it should be cool enough by itself. But anyway, no I don't think this model would be compatible.
Check the Arctic Cooling site and look at each model there to see which one works on 2600

For the silent and cool type of videocard guys. Get a real low RPM fan (1000RPM/120mm) and tiewrap it to the heatsink.
Well, the cooler aint passive anymore but the card is in audible (if you put the fan on a fixed RPM) at load.

will this work on a gts250 my temps are 39cidle and 59c playing crysis on high for hours i know the temps are great but would this lower them
asus3571 2 years ago
I'm not sure if it would fit the gts250, you'll have to check their site.
my guess is.... with passively cooler, the temps would probably be on average on full load 55C.
with a 120 fan on low speed of the side panel of the case, the temps would probably be 35 idle, 40-45 full load.
with those two accelero turbo fans on the heatsink the temps would probably be the same as with fan on side panel.
your temps are already low enough so I don't know if it's worth spending to get temps even lower.
