@UKTVClassics Series 5 and 6 are my favourites of all series - I was pissed off when they killed off Jono.
Lee Sparke who played Jone read series 7 of the script and, when he found the script writers were killing him off, he was disgusted and did not agree to come back to series 7. For this reason most of series 7 had to be re-written and the part was played by Jermey, his cousin, who later drowned in the swimming pool. This is what Jono refused!
26 years on and the screams still hit like a bolt of lightning. I too remember where I was when this episode was screened - getting a meal ready in my flat in Military Road, Colchester. I stopped everything to watch this.
i remember watching this episode and it was round about the same time our school had swimming lessons...it had that much of an impact on me i wouldn't get in the bloody pool for fear of drowning!
I remember watching this Classic Episode,With Vincent Mathews who played Jeremy, such a sad episode but brilliant acting by all. Luckily I have it on Tape so I have watched it Many times,Abit like the series 'One Summer' this episode will always be in my top 5 of Television
it would'nt surprise me if there was some water safety policy at the time and this was the BBCs typically hard hitting way of getting it across it would have certainly frightened the shit out of me
from what i can remember he was showing off to tho others that he could hold his breath the longest under water and this was the tragic outcome.he was a slimey kid but i kind of liked him.still a strong episode all the years gone by.
the reason he drowned was he tried to hold his breath for too long and unfortunately he had an unknown heart condition. The heart condition is explained by one of the teachers later in the episode.
Exactly. I remember at my school we were not allowed go into the gym or even poolside as we had to wait in changing rooms until a teacher gave us the go ahead or the science labs for that matter. In fact Miss hartly shud've told em not go near the pool or let someone be there
probably one of the most memorable episodes of all time. seasons 6 and 7 are my all time favourites of the hill. I remember being so shocked when Jeremy died in this episode, it was just so unexpected. I was only ten at the time, but it was all that was talked about in school for a week.
At the time i was strangley glad the kid had the accident until he drowned of course. It wasn't expected. I thought he would come up spluttering so that got his just desserts cos he was so annoying. But no. not to die. Hard to watch as an adult now as it brought back memories and how quiet i was while watching it back then (and now). Flipping BBC!
Wow fantastic work on this clip! At first I didn't realise it was in slo-mo and wondered why they didn't fish Jeremy out quicker hehe. Certainly brings back memories...I used to hang around with the kid who played Jeremy, though have sadly been out of contact for many years now. Would always pester him for snippets on the show but he never told me about this episode the rotter! I was gobsmacked when I watched it and bawled my eyes out! :o)
Remember this all too well. Totally unexpected as well. It started off as just another, ordinary episode of Grange Hill - and ended up in the death of a schoolboy. If it was 1984, I was only 11 and it really upset me.
This clip still haunts me now, 20 so years latter. Watching it back then this wasn't expected and was quite shocking to watch and still very much is now too. It scared me from going swimming and i still can't swim now. Thanks for the upload

I can't believe it has been thirty years. I watched this alot in the eighties and have most memories associated with these episodes.
I started secondary school in '92 and the time has just flown by. I can't believe it.

@dazzyboy74 Was that what happened? I thought one of the girls dropped something into the deep end of the pool and dared him to fetch it.
