I think what he meant is that philosophy cannot prove anything having to do with physics or anything else for that matter, all philosophy can do is to argue about things that can never be proven (i.e. does god exist, why are we here, are leprechauns real), and since these questions can never be answered there's no point in studying philosophy, i think his quote best describes philosophy as it is today, " philosophy is not the quest for knowledge, it is quest to prove its own relevance".

I am still undecided on this debate but if you search BBC Horizon, The Secret You the you will find a far more academic and impartial documentary which takes a look at the determinism vs free-choice theories. It doesn't use positive and negative implications of a potential finding to try and scare the viewer off believing one way or the other as the second half of this video rather unscientifically does.

I wanted to be convinced by this video, but it didn't even come close to proving determinism false. It scoffed at it and dismissed it. Its argument can be summed up as: it is dangerous, therefore it is false. Dismissing something with scorn is a code for "I cannot argue against it."
I feel that even with a deterministic viewpoint, it wouldn't be in some of us to commit atrocities anyway; we all have patterns, and I have no idea what governs them. Even with free will, I see people close their minds via groupthink or believing what they want despite evidence to the contrary; can someone consciously choose to sabotage/inhibit themselves? When they say "Philosophy is dead" they mean their understanding of philosophy is dead. Materialism is no new philosophy.
Regarding the soul, let any scientist answer this question: what is the difference between a living body and the same body right after death? If we are biochemical robots, a scientist should be able to bring the body back to life biochemically. If not, there must be another, non-physical substance that has left the body.
I enjoyed the documentary but it it struck me that the creator has no idea what science actually is. Science first and foremost is not a philosophy. It is not meant to addres the "Meaning behind the math". What you are looking for is some kind of religion in science... and it does not exist. one must explain the extraordinary phenomena of free will, the evident lack of true free will in observable actions and explain just exactley what it is. Of course there are more complex issues than this why I am a determinist- but I think it is important to point out that determinism is not evil and in fact, it provides me with the strength for forgiveness on a daily basis and certainly does not subtract from moral considerations. Adam's is absolutely right. The world of science has a set of firm criteria with which it's function to remove the impact of subjective element of observation. That is it's strength, but also it's weakness as soon as you approach subjects that can't be directly measured. Then, the method is useless. That needs to be realised, even by scientists. It's like trying to mix red with only black and white. This is why science comes out as a hindrance rather than help now.

A lot of this documentary doesnt make sense. "Pre-crime" around 17:00 might be the worst one... 1) it is never possible to collect the presence and particles in someones body and 2) the whole environment factor is totally left out. People are influenced by their environment. It is the interaction between brain and external factors.
@Machevort It is true that brain scans of a serial killer are specific in the way the mind is mapped and is corroborated by being the same in other serial killers brain scans. Pre-crime is very possible. Read a book.
@Machevort the genesis of thought is primary within the human brain/mind and only in retrospect does it become influenced by environmental factors. Therefore, environment doesn't necessarily have to factored in as it is not primary. I can think of committing some crime, which the physical environment would not let me commit but that doesn't mean i didn't have what the state can consider a criminal thought.
@Machevort You obviously didn't understand the point the video makes. According to Hawking, the whole universe, including us, are completely governed by the laws of physics. If you have an equation, and you have a point on a graph, you can determine every other point. Abstracting this to the physical world, this means that if you understand the laws of physics, and you have a comprehensive detail of the world at a specified moment, you are able to plot all other points across the time axis.

I think the issues that need to be addressed if you are going to follow this line of thought are: 1. Can we prove that there is such thing as consciousness/a metaphysical mind? There is a spiritual science as well, and the scriptures are its authority, just like the scientists are dependent on obeying authorities to fulfill their careers. I am still undecided on this debate but if you search BBC Horizon, The Secret You the you will find a far more academic and impartial documentary which takes a look at the determinism vs free-choice theories. It doesn't use positive and negative implications of a potential finding to try and scare the viewer off believing one way or the other as the second half of this video rather unscientifically does.

For all their efforts, they have been able to stimulate emotions, and memory, but never functions relating to what we think of as the mind. That humans may very well be biochemical robots in no way divorces a human being from the human experience. When they say "Philosophy is dead" they mean their understanding of philosophy is dead. Materialism is no new philosophy.
Regarding the soul, let any scientist answer this question: what is the difference between a living body and the same body right after death? If we are biochemical robots, a scientist should be able to bring the body back to life biochemically. If not, there must be another, non-physical substance that has left the body.

I enjoyed the documentary but it it struck me that the creator has no idea what science actually is. Science first and foremost is not a philosophy. It is not meant to addres the "Meaning behind the math". What you are looking for is some kind of religion in science... and it does not exist. Leave your beliefs and need for a security blanket of answers out of my science please.

@clancyben1 Leaving beliefs out of science is a good idea, and that is why I want scientist to leave their materialism and denouncement of any sort of spiritual aspect of the universe out of science as well. Or does the evidence conclusively prove that materialism is all there is? I for one think that plenty of good evidence says otherwise. That's why the Mike Adams likes true science, not the bastardization of science.

one must explain the extraordinary phenomena of free will, the evident lack of true free will in observable actions and explain just exactley what it is. Of course there are more complex issues than this why I am a determinist- but I think it is important to point out that determinism is not evil and in fact, it provides me with the strength for forgiveness on a daily basis and certainly does not subtract from moral considerations. There is much more I'd like to say, but there isn't the room! :)

Firstly, I would like to mention that I am glad to see someone who finds modern physics silly and can see through this tremendously, correctly described, arrogant reductionistic attitude that science has killed philosophy. That is, by my definition, not possible and as absurd a statement as a biologist to say that a jumping organism disproves physics; physics governs chemistry which describes biology. It is not the job of physicists to keep up with biology, even though there are connections...

Science doen't diminish our humanity, it elevates it and frees it from the slave status we were assigned by bronze age ignoramuses, which you seem to be.

Adam's is absolutely right. The world of science has a set of firm criteria with which it's function to remove the impact of subjective element of observation. That is it's strength, but also it's weakness as soon as you approach subjects that can't be directly measured. Then, the method is useless. That needs to be realised, even by scientists. It's like trying to mix red with only black and white. This is why science comes out as a hindrance rather than help now.

Yes, I agree with some things but others I don't know what is meant. Reading some of the other comments, one of the factors that one person pointed out was the environmental factor. Anyway, what I usually say is I'm only as conscious as my receptors allow me to be. I don't know what is meant by "soul" or "god". I have no physical referent for that other than other people's perceptions of it.

Haha, a law has been passed in Florida that outlawed sex completely on the pretext that humans are animals. At first I thought it was an accident, but it feels like it fits into the puzzle. Good documentary, It was very informative.

A lot of this documentary doesnt make sense. "Pre-crime" around 17:00 might be the worst one... 1) it is never possible to collect the presence and particles in someones body and 2) the whole environment factor is totally left out. People are influenced by their environment. It is the interaction between brain and external factors.

@Machevort It is true that brain scans of a serial killer are specific in the way the mind is mapped and is corroborated by being the same in other serial killers brain scans. Pre-crime is very possible. Read a book.

@Machevort the genesis of thought is primary within the human brain/mind and only in retrospect does it become influenced by environmental factors. Therefore, environment doesn't necessarily have to factored in as it is not primary. I can think of committing some crime, which the physical environment would not let me commit but that doesn't mean i didn't have what the state can consider a criminal thought.

@Machevort You obviously didn't understand the point the video makes. According to Hawking, the whole universe, including us, are completely governed by the laws of physics. If you have an equation, and you have a point on a graph, you can determine every other point. Abstracting this to the physical world, this means that if you understand the laws of physics, and you have a comprehensive detail of the world at a specified moment, you are able to plot all other points across the time axis.

The part where he talks about using this technology to find out who will commit a crime, sounds like the Tom Cruise movie that I don't remember the name to. This is what happens when people don't believe in God.

I think the issues that need to be addressed if you are going to follow this line of thought are: 1. Can we prove that there is such thing as consciousness/a metaphysical mind? (And stating that to believe there is not is a ridiculous notion is not a viable argument). and 2. Can we disprove determinism?

@FALLASLEEPworld I take a raincheck on the first question. But the second... First, I think the Butterfly effect deals neatly with all illusions men may have about practical determinism, i.e. knowing with 100% accuracy the future given present conditions.
More theoretical, by what method would one disprove determinism? Doesn't experimentally proving and disproving require assumptions about causality (and time!), without which the whole notion of determinism falls apart?

@FALLASLEEPworld My issues with Hawking's assertion is. Because he doesn't understand something being the highly intellectual person he is. It must be flawed and not him. And physicists seem to feel they know everything that is knowable. And anything they can't answer is irrelevant. Hawking doesn't feel this is an opinion. He is confident in his proclamation. They can't explain Gravity, yet they are sure the Universe has opened up and blessed them with complete knowledge. pure ignorance.

But you didn't disprove determinism. You merely pointed out how it could be used to justify a malicious end and how it has some not very nice implications. Just because it's not nice or could be used maliciously doesn't disprove it. Gravity is not very nice at times, i.e. when one falls over. And someone could use gravity maliciously by throwing someone else off of a cliff. Does that mean there is no downward force on this planet?

The last statement reminds me a lot of the theme of the Matrix, where Neo has the idea of being selfaware as well and with free will....while the movie implies he actually has done nothing else than follow predictable paths, which led him exactly where the designer of the Matrix wanted him to be.....
Is the Matrix containing a msg that implies we have no free will and is it subliminally sending this msg to every viewer?
I gotta go check the movies again now having this new context....

Modern science deals only with what can be proven or disproven via theory protocols and scientific methodology.
It seems to me that Mr. Adams simply takes issue with certain scientists' conclusions that he deems arrogant-- which does nothing to advance the premise of this video.

It is "nice" to attack science and for the record stephen hawkings on his claim of we being just biological robots. The show of the evil side of stephen hawkings intentions and views may sound very alarming without a direct truth to dismay we exist as biological robots. The it we are must be informed to us for us to know we are not that we are tricked to be. This to see how far off stephen hawkings really is, and not to fear us of a source being found that has so little meaning as in being evil.

As a firm believer in the reality of God and His intimate relationship with us (His children), I find the "scientific" hypotheses of the majority of our current physicists to be appalling, dangerous and completely ignorant. That, right there, exposes your bias. You assume consciousness is anything BUT something that arises from matter and energy. Consciousness does not collapse wave functions either, that's just a misunderstanding of how quantum mechanics works.
You have to provide evidence of something for it to be considered science. When you have something other than feelings/opinions, get back to me.

The agenda becomes even clearer. I have always wondered if that apple that Eve ate wasn't the very essence of Science. Science promised to make us Gods, but in reality it actually killed God. Science facts and truth can easily change from one minute to the next like the weather. What was true 20 years ago is not true today, and it goes on. Science is being used as another religion by people with selfish agendas. Hawkins is a bitter man and you can even see it in his eyes. I don't trust him.
