  • so awesome. great great info here

  • "I stood there and looked around, every inane, insane and uncontrollable urge to build rearrange, and fix up was there".

    S.O.T.M.

  • awesome! the lighting part was the one i was concerned.but im more concerned in the part where he puts those sheets in front of the light,i mean how can you avoid for them to melt? i tried that one time and it happened.putting a fan would be a good idea but it would still be a problem cuz the sound would interfere while filming.

  • Figured out what was wrong with my lightening LOL since I also two spot lights that aren't even mine.

  • You give Robert Rodriguez a twenty dollar bill and a pack of gum and he could make a movie with them.

  • @Rahheemme I'd actually like to see that.

  • Where do you hire actors with no budget?? How do you rent spaces to film? Fuuuu

  • @Kelpmaker you use your friends, ask and motivate attention grubbing people and you convince space owners to shoot your film for free by telling your movie how cool and badass and bladeliebla it is. Check out my 0 budget action movies guns of insurgents and silent takedown to look at how you can get free but still awesome locations. if you don't ask it, you'll never get anything!

  • @LionEyeproductions

Gahh, I wish it were that easy. I live in a small town, I don't have any money (Literally) and I'm constantley asking friends, but we all have conflicting schedules.

  • @Kelpmaker i have no money too, and rodriguez said: shoot a movie about what you have! You live in a town? Shoot a movie set in a small town. only 2 actors? shoot a movie with two people.

  • @LionEyeproductions

I do this. Again, no time, or rescources.

  • @Kelpmaker usually people post ads, stuff in local news papers. and like id say on google, look up acting auditions and youll see many data bases where itll let you post your stuff for people to apply for

  • @Mannypacquia0

    Ok, thanks for the tips!

  • @Kelpmaker np goodluck man.

  • @BoomNastee pretty sure he used actual squibs, cause he ssaid he got them from a guy. the belt held the squib and condom in place and the condom was for the blood spurt. the combination of all 3 completed the effect.

  • @BoomNastee me too!

  • @BoomNastee you'll shoot your eye out, kid.

  • so inspiring so awesome!

  • This guy's teachings are really inspiring

  • 1:40 Looks just like my guitar.

  • Making my first movie tomorrow. Now at least I can say I've been to film school!

  • I love Robert and his movies. He is the reason why is study film directing.

  • Keep the newscasters happy so they don't mind you running down the street with guns.

    Genius! :D

  • haha at 2:41 with the sound effect

  • thx bob

  • holy fuck he really borrowed the guns from the cops? my god

  • I appreciate film since it's what got filmmaking in the first place, but digital filmmaking is the way to go. You can do better storytelling and don't have to spend a lot of money or time developing the film and editing on those old moviolas.

  • que pelicula mierdera, ¿it pretend to be an accion movie or a mexican version of "The Naked Gun"?, you can take a good idea with low-budget, but this shit movie isnt an example

  • He truly is a creative and innovative. Hes one of the best Mexican director in Hollywood, my hero/role model

  • @TheOriginalNightHawk Is not one of the best mexican director in hollywood, Guillermo Del Toro is one of them and one of the best in the world, Robert Rodriguez is a fucking asshole

  • @xXviejas22Xx Do you even know Rodriguez? How can you call him an asshole? Hes a true visionary he had NOTHING and with 7000$ got a movie deal. How is that not amazing? Sure Guillermo Del Toro is a great director but i can relate more with Robert since im also starting with nothing and hope to gain everything in the long run. Also if your just going to look at a video about him just to call him an "asshole" get a life man seriously.

  • @TheOriginalNightHawk Why do i have to know this fucker?, is a mother fucker idiot, anyone with brain knows that, he get a movie deal with 7000 because mexican movies sucks, is shit, he was lucky, Tarantino makes Rodriguez's career, now he have the money to produce, but his movies still sucking

  • @xXviejas22Xx Lol so mexican movies suck? AND an american company bought his movie ideas? Him and tarantino helped each other out. Whats up with your name hating on a mexican director when your screen name is "viejas" lol eres una vieja? xD

  • @xXviejas22Xx LOL!

  • @TheOriginalNightHawk Considering Rodriguez made a semi-decent movie with what he had and put a lot of time and focus into it I don't see how he's an "asshole" either. Now on your bit about Del Toro I think he's not that bad of a filmmaker but lets be honest he's best known for Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy franchise is slightly mediocre. Rodriguez deserves all the credit he gets because he's a hard worker in the business of cinema.

  • Thats so cool

  • thats very awesome! ''edited on my living room on a home computer''

  • Robert is very intelligent

  • Wow, so much great insight. Thanks for sharing.

  • Robert Rodriguez Best Director Ever!!!!!!!

  • who managed the audio here ? is more thant cheap...is almost off

  • I read his book "rebel without a crew" AWESOME!

  • Robert is KING.

  • exelent filmmaker thanks

  • He is a genius

  • what kick this must be for some teenager who kinda has a dream to be a big name in hollywood, along with other dreams, but open to anything & they see these rodriguez film school vids and their eyes widen and they think its not a dream , i can do this, me so envious, imagine having just one teacher back in your school years who taught like this in any creative subject, just think where youd be today, so annoyed i found writing in my 30's when if i had had a cool english teacher who cared , well

  • @bryngOneOn ohhh believe me this is an ENORMOUS kick. thats exactly whats going through my mind.

every time i see a movie in theaters its the most discouraging thing in the world.

  • why in the film apear thouse flashes every time he stop and start the camera?

  • He might be checking the gate. After you do a take you want to open up the lens and check to see if you have bits of film or hair, lint, ect., running through you film. Gotta keep the film clean or else when you develop your film your cool shots might have a big piece of hair on them!!! When you open the lens your film gets exposed a little bit.

  • Or...with film cameras you have to keep the eye-piece covered so that light won't expose the film (with your hand or looking at what you are shooting). If you take your eye off or uncover the eye-piece you get light on the film.

  • Because when the camera stops the shutter doesn't close and so the first and last frame receives a lot of light and is overexposed.

  • @Joyvel He kept that in so you know when he started filming.

  • well, I don't feel so bad now about having just cheap ass homedepot lights that I use to film with.

  • Remember make it dirt cheap! I learned a lot! lol

  • the lighting is genius

  • nice review!

  • A great asset to have on your set is gaffers tape! Better than duct tape, it won't stick to a lot of surfaces and peals off easily. It is made of fabric so you can tare it in a straight line. It's a little expensive (about 22 bucks for a 3 inch roll) but its great to tape down wires or even put a mic on someones shirt. Once you use it you'll never want to use another kind of tape. It has a million uses. Colored spike tape is great, too!

  • More Stuff RR doesn't mention:

Those gels he refers to are kind of expensive and a little hard to find if you don't live in a big city. Try a theatrical supply store or even a DJ supply store. If not, look in a dumpster in back of a University Theatre Arts Department. Sometimes they throw them away when they order new colors. Don't let the gels touch the bulb (like you see in this video) when its on or it'll melt a hole right through the gel and may render your light useless.

  • Stuff Rodriguez Doesn't mention about lighting.

    1) On film, you must know beforehand to order indoor or outdoor balanced film. You can't shoot indoor balanced film outside!!! It'll look blue.

    2) The lights he refers to are called "Photofloods." Very cheap! Again, the indoor lights are "3200 K" and outdoor ones are "4800 K" minimum. Both fit in regular home sockets. Both get HOT as hell very fast and only last a few hours. So order a whole pack!

  • where do u like buy blank squibs for machine guns, how does it work?, im not talking about cap guns...

  • Blanks and squibs are different things squibs are electrically charged explosives to blow up blood packets etc. whereas blanks shoot smoke etc. from a gun. Squibs can be purchased from an effects supplier and blanks from a gun shop.

  • thanks! that really helped alot! :)

  • No problem! Glad I could help :)

  • If you guys are interested in about him and his techniques, then you might wanna buy his book

    " Rebel without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player "

  • Will do

  • ya i bought it awhile back hehe, i still laugh at the first trailer he made with the fake quotes hehe.

  • I bought and read it years ago and now, as Im embarking on my first film I've highlighted tips and tricks throughout and even just some inspirational things he says that help to push me when Im feeling overwhelmed. It's truly an investment at it's less than 20 bucks. Name me one thing you've bought for less than 20 bucks that's changed your life? I have two: Rebel Without a Crew and How to Make Webcomics.

Cesar (Mostro)

  • Great!

  • honestly, im sad, i never had the courage of robert rodriguez to make something like this..

  • "I was too cheap to even buy a can of black paint."

This guy is seven kinds of awesome.

  • Um, guy, this was shot in Mexico. Mexico. He had seven thousand dollars and he was in MEXICO. It is THAT easy and THAT cheap in Mexico.

  • Anyone whom thinks that going to school to learn filmmaking is an idiot! Learn by doing! This is exhibit A in this argument

  • this is better than what college teaches u they make u stay 4 years and at the end they tell u the same thing robert demonstrated on this video

  • So far all of my films have a zero dollar budget, lol. We will be working on our first film with an actual budget this spring or summer, though, but it will still be a miniscule budget. Robert Rodriguez is a huge inspiration for me, so is Tarantino.

  • This is something alot of filmmakers should listen to. Don't waste your money on cheap cgi effects, be creative. The biggest part of making a good movie is a good script and a little creativity.

  • amazing, what a guy

  • Robert Rodriguez is great! He is very inspiring when it comes to the techniques of how to do it yourself. I love his creativity. One of my all time favorites.

  • Robert Rodriguez is a good teacher.

  • Fucking beautiful

  • thank you for this, Indy....

If only RR would release his video diaries...

  • saved me 50 grand and four years.

  • I gave up of my USC application acceptance because of this!

    I will never study again!!!

  • He made this movie for 7,000 dollars and did every thing himself. He earned money by being a guinee pig for drug research. Check out his book on this film. Its pretty good.

  • Jesus Christ appears on the Guitar Case!!! Really I saw him. Look at 04:04! Just above the scar on the case, you can see Jesus Christ! I swear, it's Jesus...

  • I think I see Jesus on the case, as well. Good catch.

  • sorta looks more like rob zombie

  • I ain't a huge fan of his movies, but I admire his will and creativity

  • @killahkazi how can you not be a fan of his movies!? he's like the best director ever alongside quentin tarantino!

  • @Interception375 Well, not everybody likes the same movies. That should be very obvious.

  • RR is a legend. budget = everyone. =] gotta love him

  • great stuff robert. thanks. I am using a mini dv camcorder now for my films and they cost nothing :) Hope to become as sucessful as u in the future

  • RR is the man.. Great tips & makes you wanna go make a freakn movie right NOW!

  • we did a couple of short-movies for highschool, and what he says is not very different from the experience of our group. For example we had a scene with a rifle, but we had no time to find a good toy-rifle, so we had to improvise with camera angles and cuts, to hide the fact, that we had no rifle. In the end the movie ended up "stylish" because of unorthodox camera movement and angles.

  • Is that baking paper over the clamp lights?

  • Very interesting! I now have some great advice for my film I'm gonna make.

  • What's his book called?

  • Rebel Without a Crew :)

  • Ya, its a great book. I got it.. I reccomend it

  • too right! only way to go...

  • this one here and the book boosted me so much up.. incredible

  • this one is really helpful. It gave me the enthusiasm I needed for my short film that I was planning to make. Muchos gracias señor Rodriguez

  • pinche joto stfu

  • Thanks for showing us how to make a film ;)

  • Thanks for this uploader. Nice one to have... :)

  • Oh My God! Robert Rodriguez is a genius!!! seriously, such a good filmmaker, best word to describe him would be Organic. an Organic filmmaker - genius!!!

  • i got the book a few months ago. Anyone who wants to go into film, buy it!

  • Robert Rodriguez is a good teacher.

  • Good work uploading this amigo, muchos grassy ass

  • I love Rodriguez :D
