I kind of like the carbon filter idea. It has flaws but, it itself is not the flaw. If you want max THC, then no Activated Carbon is recommened. For a cleaner "healthier" and more crisp hit, then yeah - go for it. The only problem I can see is that the it is usually the first filter in the whole water pipe. The problem with that is that the activated carbon would probably work much better after the smoke is passed through water. The cooler the smoke the better it is filtered through the carbon.

@DaveWreckingCrew See I saw that flaw too, so I had my ash catcher attached to my carbon filter and then my downstem. I had the water in the ash catcher but it added too much drag so I emptied the ash catcher and now it smokes a lot better. I don't understand it except that I just prefer less drag on my toke, if you subscribe to my channel I'll be putting another video up as a comparison, thanks.

For me, this Activated Carbon in water pipes idea is still new. And, I've been thinking about the issue on drag. I'm wondering if larger granules of Activated Carbon can be a fix. I THINK a filter sock of marble sized (say, 1cm, maybe larger) chips of AC could rest atop an ice chamber/final stage. I haven't yet tried this idea but, I would imagine (if the air flow is nice) we can get a nice hit.

Whatever methods we use its all really about enjoying a good toke.

A carbon filter basically expands the surface area of your piece. 3 grams of activated carbon has about the same surface area of a football field. One of these probably holds 2 times that. So Imagine 2 football fields worth of space for tars to stick to before it even touches your water. Its not doing n e thing with the goodness btw.

even though the charcoal is porous (and the pores are small at that), the only shit that gets filtered out is burnt plant matter and tar~ neither of which does the smoker (or the device) any good. if you have a torch lighter than can get hot enough, it's essentially like vaporizing.

read up on how a charcoal filter works. educate yourself instead of jumping to conclusions

I just want to throw in some science into this discussion. ANY filter will remove *some* THC from the smoke, be it water, ice or charcoal.

The real question is: How much THC will it take out?

The answer: Probably not an amount that will make a noticeable difference to the smoker, since THC is fairly good at staying in vapour form once heated.

Personally, I could see this only being useful for schwag... A better and more efficient option is to save up and buy a vape with a ceramic element.

Folks, water filters about 4% of the carcogens for the first few hits, especially if the bong only holds a cup or so of water. After that the water will trap pschoactive chemicals like THC and make it so you need to smoke more to get high than if there was no water and you end up not filtering anymore of the carcogens so it actually is worse, if you don't change water every two or three hits. There was a huge presentation at Cannabis Cup when I went on this subject. Now cooling with ice -Yah!

Water filters but the smoke is contained in an air bubble. Only the outside surface is touching water. The carbon filters out more 'cause the air is not displacing anything. The carbon filter also extends the intervals of cleaning. you clean your bong a lot less often.

There are carcinogens in smoke that are harmful for people, and the carbon filter helps filter out the carcinogens while leaving the vaporized THC alone, which is the gas you inhale that gets you high.

i use one most the time when i smoke, it does add some drag, but it does slow down the resin build up process, keeps the glass much cleaner, i don't really notice a taste but then again i use it most the time so i may not notice like some of you might...
