  • wheres bukowski !!!!

  • Do the same for today's era!

  • Amazing Video!

  • i can't believe that this car blew through a red light at around 0:05. but you gotta love those old, vintage traffic lights.

  • Great City Great Time but the smog fucked it all up

  • lots of t birds.

  • for a second there, i tought it vas made with cellphone camera, i didn't notice the old cars

  • Incredible quality ... looks like it could have been shot yesterday ... very cool indeed.

  • Watching this video, I felt I was back in 1964. Very realistic.

    2012 sucks and 1964 rocks.

  • people drove slow back in the day.

  • The Largo is now The Roxy, yes?

  • @noirpoetix1 Correct

  • @dantanasgirl YES

  • PACHUCO TIMES, JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE ''MY FAMILY'' WITH EDWARD J. OLMOS

  • Guy runs a red light in the first 10 seconds of the video.

  • @jprietman Its funny how he didnt get a snapshot and a ticket mailed to him...

  • @Downfall8888 Yeah, I think in 1964, stopping at red lights was more of a 'general guideline' than a hard rule. I think it wasn't until the '80s when they realized pedestrians could theoretically die this way.

  • Wow. Great footage. Must have been a scorcher to be 93 degrees at 10:24 in the am.

    Cool old cars.

    Four gas stations.

    Three liquor stores.

I count four Chevy trucks. Two Ford pick ups. One VW bug.

Fella walking across street from the delicatessen must have picked up his early lunch.

Would love to go back in time and live those days again.

  • Ahhh, the good old days. Before liberalism got a foothold.

  • @kcufmalsi The funny thing is I just thought, hey, the "good ol' days" look just as crummy as today. Sprawl, billboards, pavement. It feels like if I went back to that street there would be some curmudgeon lamenting for the Good Ol' Days still.

  • @JeremyUte Nah, it was the good old days..Right before LBJ and his 'great society' ruined this nation. IE Barak Hussein Obama.

  • @kcufmalsi Agreed. LBJ really ramped up the decay of the US with his "Great Society" which was intended to create a permanent dependent underclass of loyal voters. FDR really started big government intrusion. Big government dependency is rotting this country away and if Obongo gets re-elected it is over. That monster of a public healthcare system will be the financial straw that breaks this country's back.

  • ...You could rent a nice 1 bd apt for $60.00!!!

  • red

  • Don't kid yourselves folks, it's an re-enactment of what "1964" on Sunset Strip is supposed to look like. Hollywood does this sort of thing all the time.

Film footage quality is much too good (almost HD quality) to be from 1964.

  • @wtf66611 This looks like it's a background plate shot for a movie, probably 35mm film. Which is more than HD quality. And they totally did have that back in 1964.

  • wow! thats all i can say is.. WOW!! thanks for posting this

  • Cool to see The Villa Nova before it became The Rainbow...and Largo next door is the site of what is now The Roxy.

  • This is one of the coolest videos I have ever seen. That is unreal quality for that age and what a literal "trip through the past".

  • the old cars its like porn to me cant get enough of these old beauties in there day . love this video

  • No beaners!

  • Wow...I doubt quality this good existed in the early 1960's...even on the most expensive cameras. Somebody did some very heavy cleanup on the video!

  • To me, it would look exactly like nowadays L.A. if it wasn't for the cars. Also, how the hell has it such a good quality for 1964?

  • todays hollywood looks much better, ugly trashy telephone poles are not there

  • So majestic.

  • love this, thank you <3

  • Great video footage! I noticed the Viper Room which was called the Melody Room (on the left side of the street) back then. I read about mobsters like Bugsy Siegel frequenting that place. He used to live up on Mulholland Drive there in the Hollywood Hills. I am fascinated with the history of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip. :)

  • This is such high quality I think you went back in time to 1964 to get this

  • This is amazing !!!!!!!!!!! I can not believe this was more than 45 years ago!!!!!!! Look at the quality of this video, I am very impressed and wanted to have witnessed these beautiful days. Thanks for this gem.

  • I didn't know Turners Liquor was there back then. I knew Del. I caught the Whiskey too. It's hard to miss the shape of that building, plus I once lived right up the street where after crossing Sunset, San Vicente becomes Clark St. Nice. I miss the old LA. My family goes way back. It's a damn shame what it turned into today.

  • @BellumSacrumBellum28

    then leave

  • The Unicorn was still open when this was shot.

  • Not gonna lie. This looks a alot like downtown Fresno.

  • price of gas back then?

  • Wow amazing interesting beautiful footage!!!!

  • This was 10 years before my dad was born. It feels like right now. Everything is still the same, but different cars and clothes, etc...

  • love how they went through a red light in the beginning. and yeah it looks pretty much the same today

  • right around the time of the Kennedy assassination

  • Holy crap look at the smog!

  • .sorry, offers, with an s.

  • Oh, and the place that offer "Cleopatra hair styles"? LOL...definitely '63!

  • Too bad you didn't have radio audio...that would have really been cool. If the time is correct, then it would have been time for Elliot Field on KFWB, or Ted Quillin on KRLA. I still think this is really awesome, just like you're actually there.

  • wow, street looks the same today

  • Nice sharp clear vision. Watching this is what I imagine it would be like to time travel and witness everyday life without being able to interact with anyone.

  • Hi friends. In which city is this road ??

  • Comment removed

  • @alexpilati . . Los Angeles, California . .

  • The Whiskey A Go Go isn't there. it says "Come To The Party"?

  • @grrandram good eye. this was just months before the Whisky opened. It was a former Bank. It was converted into a club called THE PARTY before changing hands and becoming The Whisky. This footage could also be very towards the end of 1963...

  • This is from 1963 because at about :55 or so there is a billboard promoting the premiere of one of my all-time favorite TV series, "The Fugitive"!!! It's green with a pic of David Janssen and it reads -- "The Fugitive" Premieres September 17 10:00 p.m. on the new Channel 7" ... and indeed the series debuted Sept. 17, 1963.

  • Theme from 77 Sunset Strip

The street that wears a fancy label

That's glorified in song and fable.

The most exciting people pass you by

    Including a private eye.

You'll meet the high brow and the hipster

The starlet and the phony tripster

You'll see most every kind of gal and guy

    Including a private eye.

  • Pacific Ocean Park billboard!

  • Use some Dick Dale!

  • you can't see a foreign car.

  • A good song would be " California Sun" by the Rivieras.

  • i love it. i dont think too many people would cross sunset like that anymore

  • Wow, I feel like I was just in a time machine! In terms of music, how about a more adult west coast jazz riff. Something from Kai Winding, Terry Gibbs any of the top bands working Sunset at night and the Capital Records tower studio by day.

  • Great !!! It needs the original sound, the street sound to be perfect

  • running a red light at 0:07...lol! somethings haven't changed!

  • wow. this stuff is great!

  • how is the quality so good? this could easily of been shot today!! amazing do you have more?

  • The sign where it says 'Come to the Party" is the Whiskey a Go-Go.

This is the most incredible footage I have ever seen on YouTube.

  • That was some decent film footage.

  • Wow......just wonderful to see. Thank you for the memories.

  • God, isnt this wonderful to see? Doesnt it make you wish you could go back to to that time? Great cars, great music, cheap gas, a great country that made most things and didnt need to import keeping spent money in the USA where it should stay? These really were the good old days...now its all gone to ratshit.....

  • @thefungarian It's a Borgward Isabella.

  • These are very neat videos! Thanks for uploading.

  • I am amazed about the very good quality of the film

its like it was filmed yesterday.

    thanks for sharing

  • Very cool. Wish it lasted longer.

  • The strip looks better today but the cars certainly don't!

  • The Party on Clark became the Whisky of course but even farther west, the Largo became the Roxy and Villa Nova is The Rainbow. Gil Turners is still there as is Bank of America in the same building. Just awesome

  • Look at that bldg of Whisky A Go Go TRT: 0:35...still same. This is awesome..

  • Wow, the Sunset Strip actually looks trashier back then than it does now. A lot less busier too.

  • Why the not-so-subtle watermark?

  • I'm a huge retro nerd and love stuff like this. I bet that Shell station is still there, just with modern signage.

The good quality makes it feel more authentic too, like this is how it would be if you were really there. VHS camcorders weren't even around yet, so this must've been professionally filmed. Also, notice the amount of 50s and even 40s cars still on the road at that point.

  • @JPMcFly1985 The Shell station is long gone, but the 76 station across the street is still there (different company however).

  • Dam!!

  • This is great footage! Thanks!

  • OMG! I remember this so well... the club The Party on the right at the corner of LaCienega became the Whiskey a Go Go, right? The Union 76 station on the left is still there- and the Unicorn became DUKE's! AAAHHHH! And the Robin's Egg Blue MGA! Oh God! Hamburger HAmlet! Hooray!

  • i love the sixties culture (here in America) n despite i didnt live those great years i feel so glad to see a material like this with this quality on youtube . i know 64 is a breaking point in american music because of The beatles but id put wonderful summer by robin ward (1963) or little town flirt by del shannon (1963) great cool material!! thanks !!

  • This appears to be going west on sunset blvd towards doheny. The liquor store at the corner is still there. I love it, upload some more please.

  • Question...at 0:26 is that the Whiskey or is that where the Laugh Factory is currently???

  • @oneluv72 Not sure but I thiks it's where the laugh factory is at today.

  • @hotathlete2 Ok Thanks!!!

  • Isn't it crazy how all these people were unknowingly captured on film and put on display as an example of an era years and years later? I wonder if someone is recording me driving around and then showing it 50-80 years later as an example of life back in 2010.

    Pretty intense stuff.

  • What street are we going down? This looks so familiar to me!

  • @louisa1832 going west on sunset blvd towards doheny. It's leaving hollywood and entering beverly hills.

  • this is crazy! the film is so high quality it looks like it could be from today!

  • 0:45 hey that fucker didn't signal. If he's still alive someone should find him and give him a ticket! :)

  • More please!

  • all the old cars look new.... lol

  • This is so awesome! Rare to see such clear video of the LA/Hollywood area during this time. Thanks for posting!

  • The quality is so good. It looks like it was filmed yesterday. It really gives you a sense of life back then. It wasn't that different from today. It's people just going about there everyday business.

  • I think they used Hollywood quality movie cameras on this as a time capsule project, great idea, gives modern movie makers an idea how to retrofit old scenes.

  • @PupuTheClown Play with me....

  • That was a total mind and time warping experience. The intro was right at that corner, where to the right was Tower Records... then it comes up to The Whiskey A Go Go with the party sign. In the morning, amazing footage.

  • This is way cool, thanks for posting.

  • It's to great for music, traffic sound effects is u should do to this one

  • love the Nomad and the other cars!!!!!

  • Wow, look at all of the beautiful cars! Man if heaven exists, it looks something like this.

  • What song should we edit in this clip??

  • @dantanasgirl Great clip! You should use the theme song to 77 Sunset Strip, if you can.

  • @dantanasgirl "i get around" by the beatles.., was a hit in 1964 goes with the year of the footage

  • @thabluman Good choice!

  • @dantanasgirl But I think you mean by the beach boys...

  • @thabluman tarded!

  • @dantanasgirl

    no song.

just add traffic noise from a car ride on sunset boulevard.

  • @dantanasgirl

I'd put in Gloria by Them.

  • @Podevarius I 2nd that. EXcellent song to go with this vid.

This vid makes me HomeSick for 1960's L.A.

  • @dantanasgirl How did you obtain this footage?

  • @dantanasgirl Actually, I find that adding music (as good as the songs may be) always detracts from rather than adds to an otherwise interesting video.

Ideally, listening to those engines running is music to my ears. If you don't have the audio or if it's in bad shape, well, silence is golden.

But, I love these videos... thanks for posting!

  • @dantanasgirl beach boys

  • Yes i did Thank you

  • “this footage can be licensed from Getty Images” - funny, so is my music!

  • great channel, great clips...thanks dantanasgirl!!!

  • hey dude no chemtrails!

    Amazing, crystal clear footage

one or two of these signs remain..I'm thinking of the liquor store on Sunset and Doheny - pretty sure that sign is still there

Maybe in the near future people will realize a 'town-sized' scale for signage is the way to go - buildings not coated in plastic megabranding, no mega video screens and no suburban zombies puking in imitation of their favorite reality show star. And no hit and runs by coked out producers

    peace

  • Los ANgeles really was beautiful back then, Sunset Blvd is so pretentious and gaudy now, it has a charm to it here that is sadly all gone.

  • WOW, this is a dream come true for me, I love this stuff.

  • They totally run that red light in the beginning, ha.

  • Unable to find a group on Facebook called Vintage Los Angeles....

(Finding groups on FB is a pain.)

  • It was 93 degrees that time of day according to the thermometer of Empire Savings.

  • @esmort ...and it was 10:25 AM !! Love the details that are on the footage !!!

  • He runs the red light at the beginning! Typical L.A. driver! LOL

  • Before all the traffic!

  • the sky looks so smog-less.

  • @openyoureyes I actually thought it looked smoggy!

  • You can see more vides from this era and thousands of photos on a facebook group called : VINTAGE LOS ANGELES

See you there! Keep the comments coming! :)

  • @dantanasgirl are you sure vintage los angeles is the correct spelling on facebook ?

  • @masterofnone0001 Were you able to find the page on facebook? Vintage Los Angeles. ?

  • @dantanasgirl

The journey begins at Horn Avenue and travels directly west along sunset crossing a number of streets including Larrabee street and Doheny Drive.

  • I like how everyone has badass cars XD

  • Yeah, I think this was just before the time when my mom used to see acts like Johnny Rivers at the Whisky circa 1964, when the Whisky opened. Also, you can see the 9000 building just begin to get under construction across from Largo--lol, pre-Rainbow and Roxy. Never new the Hamburger Hamlet was that close to the Whisky. Of course, as you know, there is a Hamburger Hamlet futher up west on Sunset that's been there quite awhile now.

  • Lets get shitty at villa nova and then head to the Largo.. Awesome

  • Sure this was '65? Whisky opened in '64 and the awning still references the prior club "The Party." It does say, "Welcome to THE PARTY," so maybe they just kept the awning because it just reads like a general welcome for any club, but I didn't see the Whisky name anywhere and it seems it should have been there in '65. Great vid, though!
