you don't need to make facial expressions to play good guitar . he's playing beautiful music with his ears, fingers and his heart . he's not playing guitar with his face ! sheesh !
This is an utmost heavenly beautiful interpretation of Body And Soul. One of the best versions I've ever heard - maybe THE best. And I've heard some...
A million thanks to Matt Otten for sharing your superb musicality and instrumental skills with the world. We need it.
It made me shed a tear or two. Johnny Green, the composer (1908-1989), would've too, I think, If he'd heard this.
verdaderamente extraordinario, una explosión de sentimentalismo, poseo una guitarra igual y ni en mis mas remotos sueños he podido tocar una nota asi, gracias por compartir.
I believe there is a certain point in which you don't have to show emotion to let it out. especially playing a ballad. I dunno, that is just my point of view on things...
@tbonechs2010 you're right. what a lot of people do not understand is that music STARTS as an idea. secondly, we are able to sing it, and thirdly we are able to play it. that is the natural order of things, it's as simple as that. it's impossible to see the emotion on an idea within someone's head, and the people that "need" to see the emotion aren't looking for music they are looking for entertainment. this is why the whole music industry as a whole BAFFLES me. so much false ideals of music.
@tbonechs2010 this is emotionless playing, he's not even smiling, or getting sad at the sad bits, what's wrong with you Matt, are you some kind of genius guitar robot?
uh....love to hear you pull off anything as smooth and sweet. Not to start a fight...
Then again, nothng compares to the juice and energy of thse wild Van Halen videos from 82/83 avail at Dme or Trader's Den.....but that is a different story :) But seriously, the art of jazz guitar goes beyond just about anything. Requires such an ear and understanding of the music.
Sorry, the giutar is a Joe Pass by Epiphone....... Matt plays the Peerless Monarch on newer recordings......check out his older recordings...... bottom line.. If you put strings on a broom stick he WILL make it sound great...........KEEPON STRUMMIN..........DALLAS
Hey, you are so right. That would be one sweet broomstick, my friend. :) Just got a Yamaha MM6 with MOTIF 2 days ago. My home studio is coming together quite nicely. Gonna ditch the PC for a Mac and get to it! Thanks for the reply Dallas! Still cranking it out? I will be watching. Cheers to ya
looks like an Epiphone joe Pass model. Kinda like an L5. I had one but never got on with the pickups. This guy makes it sound great, though, so possibly customized?
I have been playing jazz guitar 35 years and my friend who has been playing as a pro 60 years agree this is the sound we are always strived for. Your tone is stellar and you play with taste thanks
There is a guy out of the bay area Jeff Burr who is along the same lines, but dare i say even more inventive within the bounds of classic jazz guitar. This is outstanding nonetheless.
ok seeing as you love ballads i wanna bounce a couple of of you and mabey youll play them hear :-).......shadow of your smile, and the very thought of you those are ballads....:-)
bravissimo, I am a new youtube member and I am learning jazz guitar ,please watch my video and give me a comment I would appreciate ! how you make so nice bass backing track ?
Matt you are so cool,How many fingers do you have? The bass register is so low everything in the house was shaking and buzzing,5 stars for one star. ;)
Well Matt I have bought you guitar course and It's Fab really helping a lot. I love this standard great playing once more.Where do you get some of those lovely notes from???

To play any decent jazz guitar, you have to be emotionless, to let the music shine through, unaffected by the inner feelings of the musician

eh, just listen to the music. he's too concentrated to show emotion.
this is the kind of jazz i'm into, though. so my viewpoint is biased

Neither do I. Its emotion, but its more internal. You gotta have emotion to produce a great tune such as this.
