Saw him in Glasgow a few time, how lucky was I?His Father was the first black man to play Football(soccer),for Glasgow Celtic. Thanks for the music...RIP Gill.
Hey wait... I wanna be the star of a Hollywood B movie... I wanna be in a b movie. Can I please be in my very own b movie? I'm tired of the real life movie.
What has happened is that in the last 20 years, America has changed from a producer to a consumer. And all consumers know that when the producer names the tune...the consumer has got to dance. That's the way it is. We used to be a producer – very inflexible at that, and now we are consumers and, finding it difficult to understand
THIS IS OUR HISTORY TEACHER. HE NOT SUGARCOATING SHIT HE TELLING LIKE IT IS . HE PREDICTED THIS LIKE 30 YEARS AGO AND IT STILL REPEATING NOW . IT GOING ON NOW! AND THE BEAT STILL GOING !!
Oh man this is a real foot stomper and mind opener. Never thought I'd be dancing around my room to such deep words enfused with a killer back beat. Fills in the grove that's been missing from spoken word/ music all these years. These Occupy movements should be blasting this. The revolution will not be televised!!
. . . I don't care how many times I listen t this tune it strikes me the same always as it did when I bought the album 30 years ago. It's ironic that our state of the union is pretty much the same, well; actually it's worse. Isn't it amazing how history repeats itself??? Same stage different actors. Gil has always told it like is whether any of us was truly listen or not.
We are going to miss your wisdom, R.I. P. Gil Scott-Heron we love you.
@eyelovelil amen brother, hearing this from GSH changed my life and opened my eyes...bringin' truth to the *powerful* assholes who have fuckin' ruined this cuntry! (see my previous comment)
Gil and his band supplied two of the best gigs I've ever been to. Reflections has been a favourite album of mine since it's release. I found out Gil is no longer with us last night. I felt sad. I'm sure Gil would not want to RIP, but will groove on. He will in my life.
In 1982 I wrote GSH, and asked why there were no lyrics of "B" Movie on the album Reflections. To my surprise he responded saying, "when ideas center around current events with shifting focus, we are subject to adding and deleting points from the original script". Script meaning poem. 29 years later this poem holds true today, just change the political names. Pure Genius. Oh BTW I still have the letter. Thanks Gil.
I was driving to a gig two weeks ago when this song came on npr radio. I was saying to myself ," I have to check this guy out", only to find out by the end of the song that it was a memorial tribute because he had passed a couple days prior. Let the fight continue because ,regardless of ethnicity or creed, we're all just social security numbers to the government.
@0814NIK amen, I'm glad you had the chance to hear his poetry and music, this was the turning point of my life in '81 when I first heard it and his words ring as true today, unfortunately...fight the power and OCCUPY!
This is perhaps the Apex of his brilliant writing career! Absolutely ingenius use of English. I remember hearing this piece for the first time in College during the 80's years and have loved every re-listen ever since. RIP brilliant soul
So, in 1981, according to Gil Scott Heron, "Natural resources and minerals will change your world. The Arabs used to be in the 3rd World. They have bought the 2nd World and put a firm down payment on the 1st one. Controlling your resources will control your world."
Hmmm.... It is now 2011... Year of the Arab Spring. The Middle East used to be major players in the world, several centuries ago. Guess they wanna make a comeback.
Gil Scott Heron is among the greatest that my generation has to offer....he was blessed with the talent of articulation and music that explained and now reminds us of the struggle that is going on for our minds....RIP
For a middle-class white teenager in the mid-seventies, GSH hit me right between the eyes. Loved everything that he told me and wished I could have seen him every time he came to Chicago. I will miss his voice and influence on my music and writing...a true revolutionary. Rest in peace GSH...and thank you from the pit of my soul!
Gil predicted the "Beginning of the end of the American Dream" nearly 30yrs ago! too bad only "Some of Us" listened, The Truth be heard! We Must continue to believe in Truth and Justice, Not "Just Us" but Everyone! ~Peace,JohnnyV~ May Your Revolutionary Spirit of Truth live Forever Mr Gil Scott Heron,~1949-2011~
RIP I was lucky enough to see Gil live last year, almost didnt go, but so glad I did, one of the best gigs I have been to. Poet, Visionary, Genius and outstanding raconteur.

@marclechef Yuh. My sentiments actually. And what is more unique. There is really no one you can compare him with. As it was very much his own "voice". What an unbelievably talented person. A great poet and visionary as you say. And his voice was something else. Whether he was singing or talking. I saw him twice. Once in London at Ronnie Scott's and once in New York city. Both concerts memorable. SUCH a shame he passed away. I only found this out last night and I was very shocked.
@marclechef fuck I remember hearing this when I was 21 y.o. naive Irish Catholic blue collar white boy and it just blew me away...now I'm an *old fart* of 52 and it makes me wanna holler...I knew Raygun was a fuckin' criminal and Bush I was a fuckin' criminal and Cheney/ Bush II was the WORST fuckin' criminals...OCCUPY THIS FUCKIN' CUNTRY!
@oneirishpoet Ha! That is funny, part of I fits ur description :D I was jammin and feelin oh so cool in the 70's when he busted lose with Brian Jackson. Most grooviest singer I have ever heard...love to just let his albums play and play while entertaining :)
Same here ... this is the first of his that i heard and it grabbed me straight away. Had the priviledge of seeing him live about 15yrs ago .. he was absolutely captivating.
This is the song that introduced me to Gil Scott-Heron. The first time I heard it, I thought to myself "Anyone who hates Reagan this much is worth listening to."
