  • this show made me want to be a cop when i was younger,,although i went a diferrent direction...this theme makes want to go catch a bad guy right now...

  • A very memorable tv show theme here! I watched this show as a kid in grade school. Exciting action.

  • SAM MEVILLE IS SO DAM GOOD LOOKING I CAN'T STAND IT!

  • i even named our rap group after this show

  • classic

  • Kate Jackson was hot back then.

  • Did they later redo the opening? I remember watching this show as a kid, and I remember the theme music, but I definitely *don't* remember the pulsating red-- definitely hard on the eyes!

  • I'm sure someone else has said this in the zillions of comments to this video but that shot of the police academy at the start of this video sure looks like the exact same shot of the same police academy when they opened the Charlie's Angels show credits as well. Also didn't John Davey AKA "Shazam" do a guest apperance on this show? If anyone knows...

  • funky ass intro, huh?

  • wow,,now thats an opening theme....

  • When is iTunes going to offer these shows??

  • @SFGiantsFan100

    TOTALLY want this one!

  • Classic Theme right here!

  • Listen to that bass line. One of the best tv themes, EVER!

  • @kyokogodai

In combination with the wah-pedal guitar! Yes!!!

  • Same Police Academy as the one in "Charlie's Angels" credits,no wonder Kate Jackson is there too! lol

  • i just got that..yeah..she went there..lol

  • LOL!!!! I was thinking the same thing!

  • Yes because this premiered a few years before Charlie's Angels and was produced by Aarron Spelling as well who is Tori Spelling's dad. Hopefully not tmi too much information. Candy Spelling his wife is trying to sell the gigantic 100 million home in California.

  • Great show, wish they would put out the last 3 seasons on DVD! Anyone have them on VHS to sell?

  • this was such an awesome show.. i so remember watching it.. back when times werent so fast and complicated

  • I was 8 years old when this first came out...lol IMO I've always thought that this was the best police show ever. Then I would have to put in Starsky and Hutch right after the Rookies but it's a very close call...

  • I used to watch this as a little kid, about 7-8 just to see Michael Ontkean. Even then "I knew" what I was to be lol.

  • nice heavy bass and sythesisers plus horns..still sounds nice

  • LOL, the conclusion at about 1:03....looks like the dash for coffee and donuts.

  • whats taking so long for season two of the rookies to get released out on dvd

  • Georg Stanford Brown was a badass on this show. And Sam Melville was a very underrated actor. I remember season 3 and 4 the most when Willie(michael ontkean left the show). Does anyone know why Ontkean left after season 2? Just curious.

  • Gerald O'Loughlin... I thought he could pass as Edwin Newman(longtime NBC News commentator).

  • Kate Jackson looks hot...

  • Michael Ontkean is in this; I never knew. The only things I remembered him before are in "In a Child's Name"(CBS, 1989) and a movie sometime after with Jaclyn Smith, who was in "Charlie's Angels" with Kate Jackson(also a "Rookies" alum).

I only recall the music, as it was on TV when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old at that point.

You're right, guys... the 1970s was the BEST time for TV, and namely COP shows! Not the "feminized" bull$#!+ that dominates TV today!

  • VERY gritty cool theme. I really miss the times when the themes were as cool as the shows.

  • you´re goddam right

  • Nice!!! Good Song!

  • I wished this series was on DVD already. Georg Stanford Brown was the coolest brother since Clarence Williams III (The Mod Squad). Incidentally, both were involved with Tyne Daly (Cagney and Lacey), whose father was James Daly (Medical Center) and is the sister of Tim Daly (Wings).

  • There was a lot of running back then.

  • Brings me back to my Jr.High days. And this show had a rarity. A white guy named Willie.

  • The Rookies, Adam 12 and SWAT. They are why I took the job. CSI (cant stand it)

  • You are just like me.....

  • that last shot of the alley is right behind my building! it still looks relatively the same...

  • 1. The Rookies

    2. SWAT

    3. The Rockford Files

    4. Starsky & Hutch

    5. The Six Million Dollar Man

    The best shows ever.............

  • Mod Squad

  • I second that! Mod Squad!!!!!

  • My favorite show when I was about 5. Got the figures, and my best friend's family got me the change of uniforms.

  • I always wanted to be a cop and its all because of "THE ROOKIES". Best cop show ever!! And best theme opening of all-time. A shame sam melville(mike) died at such a young age

  • how did he die? i had a little crush on him even though he played a married man

  • Sam Melville died of Heart failure in 1989.....

  • Sam Melville... I recall his face from one of the first "Hawaii Five-O" epi's on my DVD collection. He was in the "Tiger by the Tail" episode as part of a kidnapping hoax gone awry.

  • They don't make shows like this anymore. There is no TV for guys anymore! Damn !!!!!

  • @TariusShinobi I agree with you 100% on this. It looks like they made the 70's tv shows for us guys all right! Excellent point!

  • @TariusShinobi i agree!

  • Definitely funky sounding.

  • I wonder if they have this series on DVD.

    Brings back memories.

  • Yes this is out on DVD.

  • @FireitupBedford

Season 1 only so far. We're still hoping for seasons 2-4.

  • Top 5 best opening and theme music of all time.

  • Like the theme and the show, but definitely not top five:

    1. Mission Impossible

    2. S.W.A.T.

    3. Baretta

    4. Hawaii Five-O

    5. The Rockford Files

    Honorable Mention: Starsky and Hutch

  • I'm a funk guy, that's why its in my top 5. Turn up the bass when it plays....you'll change your mind!

    My Top 5:

    1. Baretta

    2. Kojak

    3. Rookies

    4. Starsky & Hutch

    5. SWAT

  • Sabotage!!

  • Cool. When ever I played 'cops and robbers' as a kid, I always had this theme music running through my head...especially when I was 'chasing' the bad guy.

  • Cop shows in the 70's were so cheap and gritty, but man did they rock! Much better than today's overly produced sterile stuff.

  • You left out "Manix", "Bronk", "The Fugitive, "The FBI", "Adam 12", "The blue knight".

  • TV of the 70's ruled ! The Rookies, SWAT,Starsky & Hutch, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files: Pure Alpha Male action ! Now we have shows like:Desperate HouseWhores,Monk,CSI: With these sensitive ass men ! Hell No, bring back the Guys with Balls of steel !

  • You ain't lyin' at all.

There were more characters on TV back then and it actually made it fun to watch.

I do like CSI though, but its about the only good one from this decade.

  • CSI, Bones and all those new shows are crapolla compared to the 70s shows!!

  • I totally agree. My wife will sit through hours of CSI this and Law and Order that. I can't really stand to watch them because of the fact that I was brought up on real cop shows. Well written scripts with great music and ACTION-packed excitement. None of this snooze-fest, dark and slow crap with all the women walking around in their best heels doing a serious investigations. Please... spare me. The Rookies and S.W.A.T. were two of the best cop shows ever. Thnx for the post Bret!

  • Without a doubt one of the best tv theme songs ever, brings back memories.

  • You are correct garth,Steve Forest did guest star as Lt.'Hondo'Harrelson, swat, looking to recruit officers to join the elite S.W.A.T. unit.

  • My mind is playing tricks on me. Wasn't there a cross-special where the Rookies were going to join S.W.A.T.? They had the SWAT cast and everything?

  • Truly one of the best TV themes of all time.. Elmer Bernstein composed it, if I remember right.

  • This is cool as shit. I love this stuff. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • bad ass music

  • This song sounds better now that it did then! I remember the very first episode when a rookie was killed and they had a big police funeral for him. (I was like 7 or 8 years old.

  • This sure brings back some memories! I remember watching this show back in the '70's and early '80's. It's too bad that shows like this one are no longer made.

  • Nice!!! Good Song!

  • neato

  • Wow Seeing this "The Rookies" is Very Cool i used to see them on tv when i was Younger! 5:50pm on 8-17-F-07

  • george stanford brown a bad dude

  • i wanna see the 2nd intro - where the "O"'s in The Rookies revolve like police sirens.

  • It's like the male version of Charlie's Angels, right down the same Police Academy the Angels went too.

  • What did the end credits of "The Rookies" TV series look like?

  • Does anyone have a vidclip of the end credits to "The Rookies" TV series?

  • Red background, white letters. S.W.A.T. adapted a similar end credit style with a blue background and yellow letters.

  • Oh, I see. Thanks for the info.

  • One of my favorite shows as a kid... thanks for posting.

  • Aaron Spelling shows had kickass theme songs!

  • That theme definately rocks!!!

  • Anyone else notice that The Rookies went to the same police academy that "Charlie's Angels" went to?

  • bad ass intro tune

  • Right on, bro!

  • Hey, thanks for making me feel old! LOL

  • OLD SCHOOL!

  • Elmer Bernstein's Theme is Cookin Man!!!!

  • Boy do I remember this!! Thanks for posting!

  • Loved that show!!!

  • I love Kate!

  • One of the shows that inspired me to become 5-0!
