A M car will always go round a track quicker than the rival AMG car. Top gear has proved this time and time again. My dad has owned both M cars and AMG's and one of them is a country mile ahead of the other and its certainly doesnt come from the mercedes showroom.
The MB:s are set-up for autobahn driving as prio 1. More caster, less nervous steering etc. That makes them more relaxed in a straight line at high speed but a little less sharp on the track. But that's ok because it's on normal roads that 99,99% of the cars time will be spent..

AMG cars will hold their own against any BMW in drag race. But so will a Chrysler 6.2L Hemi. BMW cars are not engineered to drag race. They are engineered to race with lots of balanced power and handling. Try to pit this M5 against this very S55 (or ANY other AMG car) on a racing circuit and you'll appreciate the differences in the engineering philosophies for both brands.
I have drove both cars recently. I was not impressed by the M5 at all except for its handling. My best friend just got a E55 AMG ang easily this car would take the M5 in the quater mile. After about a 120mph the M5 will win due to its Tranny. Both are nice cars after driving all 3 I like the S55 AMG the best. ITs not a fair race considering the fact that the S55 is a Large luxury sedan, were as the M5 is a Midsize car. The S55 wegihts over 200lbs more the the M5. A fair race would be a E63 AMG

That's disappointing, I'd have thought the 5 would have had a much bigger lead on the S, its a far newer car and orientated more as a sports solution. The 63AMG is the competitor, or the 65.I test drove E60 M5 and I was disappointed, bland dash, build feel didn't seem as solid a merc, fast, bt boring. It felt like a playstation on wheels. Amazing tech ability, but its at the cost of feel. the clutch system proves uneasy pulling away in town. Pity they won't be fitting the V10 to the new M3.

I personally went through all the settings. Everything was Maxed out. P500s, EDC, MDM the worx... Though I do agree it could have been a better race. Do note that the S55 was running on Mickey Thompson racing slicks with warmed up tyres (burnout as u can see) meanwhile the M5s run was its first run without any warm tyres,etc.
well it is true that the m5 wins toward the end, but i personally believe it could have done way better, perhaps the gear change setting wasn't furious enough, and maybe EDC wasn't put on sport2, or traction control may have interfered a bit. POINT BEING: IT COULD HAVE DONE MUCH BETTER THEN THAT!

Not a single mercedes has even a limited slip differential for a start, and mercedes dont bother with a proper gear box they just use an automatic....

WHOAH buddy,every amg has lsd.i dont know whereu get ur facts from, and u say proper gearbox ?? mercedes new transmission the MCT double clutch tranny is a lot faster than bmw's it shifts much quicker,dont believe me ? look at the comparo between the sl63 and the m6,its sad really,the sl65 can get a flat 4 second blast to 60 whilst the m6 can only manage 4.5 in launch control mode

yh but in the mercs if u want a lsd u have 2 pay extra and the bmw m cars are still streets ahead when it comes to going round corners lsd or not. Also that transmission is only available on ONE of the amg cars (sl63) which is a big sloppy convertible so its only fast in a straight line

why not race your bosses SLR against the McClaren F1 road car with the BMW engine fuck wit and see what happens then. Your comparing a super car with everyday cars. Your simple. Why dont u keep your simple comments in your simple brain. By the way the slr is made by McClaren not merc they make the engine, just like the old McClaren F1, where bmw made the engine.

Dude, everyone knows BMWs are performance cars. An M3 E92 with almost 200 less horsepower would beat your $200,000 waste of money on a race track. Maybe not a drag race, but a real track, where handling and braking comes into play.

AMG cars will hold their own against any BMW in drag race. But so will a Chrysler 6.2L Hemi. BMW cars are not engineered to drag race. They are engineered to race with lots of balanced power and handling. Try to pit this M5 against this very S55 (or ANY other AMG car) on a racing circuit and you'll appreciate the differences in the engineering philosophies for both brands.

I have drove both cars recently. I was not impressed by the M5 at all except for its handling. My best friend just got a E55 AMG ang easily this car would take the M5 in the quater mile. After about a 120mph the M5 will win due to its Tranny. Both are nice cars after driving all 3 I like the S55 AMG the best. ITs not a fair race considering the fact that the S55 is a Large luxury sedan, were as the M5 is a Midsize car. The S55 wegihts over 200lbs more the the M5. A fair race would be a E63 AMG

What are you talking about? WOOOW 200 pounds- average weight a male big deal. M5 got 5L, AMG got another half. .5L should make up for 200 loss. 63 amg? another 1.2L over M5. Comon with this shit already. All mercs are good at 6+. Can never get 100 HP/L like nearly all the new performance bimmers.

Dudes.. Both cars are amanzing, I like most the M5, but the benz is really good too. M5 won this drag, but you've got to remember that there are different drivers with different skills... So, I preffer the competiton. However winning is veeery satisfying!

That's disappointing, I'd have thought the 5 would have had a much bigger lead on the S, its a far newer car and orientated more as a sports solution. The 63AMG is the competitor, or the 65.I test drove E60 M5 and I was disappointed, bland dash, build feel didn't seem as solid a merc, fast, bt boring. It felt like a playstation on wheels. Amazing tech ability, but its at the cost of feel. the clutch system proves uneasy pulling away in town. Pity they won't be fitting the V10 to the new M3.

I personally went through all the settings. Everything was Maxed out. P500s, EDC, MDM the worx... Though I do agree it could have been a better race. Do note that the S55 was running on Mickey Thompson racing slicks with warmed up tyres (burnout as u can see) meanwhile the M5s run was its first run without any warm tyres,etc.

well it is true that the m5 wins toward the end, but i personally believe it could have done way better, perhaps the gear change setting wasn't furious enough, and maybe EDC wasn't put on sport2, or traction control may have interfered a bit. POINT BEING: IT COULD HAVE DONE MUCH BETTER THEN THAT!
