I discussed this topic with friends yesterday, even with dragon age and mass effect as examples. Now that I think about it, one of the others also watches your videos... And so there is no great coincidence after all.
I get the feeling that you would like EVE online. Serious internet spaceships with epic complexity but you need to be quite patient, its a game that you will either love or hate. I love it. Highly suggest you try it out :)
I love the culture novels... you're right about the death but, actually, that's pretty much what I like in a book. Lots of death and carnage. But I also liked his other non sci-fi novels, like 'the bridge' even though 'the bridge' was... yeah. So essentially I'm never really worried about liking one more than the other when one of my favourite authors is famous in both genres.
oh gooosh y know! i used to be really into magic and fantasy stuff: i have swords and a crossbow in my room, I used to disguise do roleplaying set in other worlds, play way too many video games... stuff like that! And now I... still wanna do it but find myself kinda lazy towards it. Like it attracks me because of the good memories it brings, but not for itself. Oh, I'm a girl. That brings more nerdness into the... thing xD
But there's a new Elder Scrolls coming out! It's coming out on 11.11.11! So you should definitely rekindle your love of fantasy because Oblivion just got DRAGONS.
The whole idea about Iain M. Banks' Culture is just totally awesome. Reading his Culture short story "State of the Art" convinced me of the idea that, if an extra-terrestrial society has the tech to come over to our little planet, then they will certainly also have the tech to make us notice them in almost exactly the same way that we notice nitrogen molecules in the air. Also, if they have the sophistication to travel to our planet, then there's really nothing of interest for them here...
The exact same thing happened to me. I mean, I still love both, but I started drifting towards sci-fi around the time I started to realize just how awesome science really is. I mean, magic is cool and everything, but dude. SCIENCE. It's out there.
I love sci-fi. My favorite author in the genre is Theodore Sturgeon. Most of his books were written in the 50s, but that makes it all more interesting to read considering how small people's brains were back then.
Iain banks's culture novels are amazing.... I should realy check if he's brought out a new one, The main characters don't die off THAT much. Not that death is permanent.
You should read The Algebraist. Also by Banks, not set in the Culture universe, doesn't have any immersionbreaking FTL travel. No sir, they do all their interstellar travel via wormhole.
Turn off auto focus, please! You've got 1080p video that is no higher quality than the 360p version, cause your camera is spazzing out trying to focus on your hands!
Oh, this is an issue I can actually relate with. I had a nerdgasm when The Wise Man's Fear came out, and I will again when A Dance With Dragons is released. However, the Otherland series is easily one of my favorites. I'll have to check out the other series you mentioned... A Song of Ice and Fire prepped for watching all my favorite character die. So did Gurren Laggen.
I never really liked sci-fi, maybe for the reason that it COULD happen, while Fantasy is a form of escapism and things which are unusual.
Maybe I'll like sci-fi in the future, once I've seen a lot more fantasy shit and therefore it will stop being unusual and different and just be "oh yeah, that's how shit is" while sci-fi is constantly evolving, as it has little restraints which it has to abide by, as fantasy does.
@11CheshireCat Reading them in order is not really necessary, each book is a story by itself. Although in the (historical) background some things might overlap between books (the Idiran war, some characters (Diziet Sma, Cheradenine Zakalwe)). Although I completely love all the Culture novels, Excession really blew me away. Have fun reading it!
I second (or third, or whatever) the Moon is a Harsh Mistress rec. Also, Vernor Vinge is great, particularly (well, these are the only ones I've read :P) A Deepness in the Sky and Fire Upon the Deep. And Dune. Also, Calvin and Hobbes when they go to Mars.
I feel the fantasy versus Sci Fi battle is over its really both of them against Paranormal Romance. Vampires. Also read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress you will love it.
I've definitely been more on the side of fantasy - Terry Pratchett and George R.R. Martin kick so much butt - but I definitely appreciate me some sci-fi too. As long as it's good I'll read it. As for otherland, while I enjoyed it, I thought it was too long (same prob with shadowmarch series tbh). Still, I thought there were echoes of shadowland in the lamentably cancelled Caprica. Would loved to have seen more of that.
had no idea they were making some sort of hbo thing with game of thrones! waghhh my brother and i were JUST reminiscing about scandalous readings of those as youths yesterday.
HOW AM I EVER GOING TO WATCH THIS!
awh man, just made my night- the trailer makes it look ridiculously epic.
I just got super excited when I got the email telling me you uploaded a video, then super sad because I realised that it was the one I watched 4 days ago. I still watched it all the way through again though, lol
I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT DRAGON AGE AND MASS EFFECT! I've just recently been going through the same realization...I've always been a fantasy person, but recently I've really been into scifi. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. XD
To be able to sum up what you are aiming to say in a single sentence, but still expanding generally means that you have a thesis an then go on to support it.
I've always loved both and never really understood the whole "versus" aspect between the two, especially since the lines are so easily blurred. When I was little I was massively into the /idea of sci-fi, then I slid into fantasy more because the really good sci-fi works tended to be slightly too sophisticated for a little kid to truly get, and now I'm back to sci-fi again. But I hold them both close to my nerdy heart.
Game of Thrones :D :D :D I'm glad you haven't completely deserted the fantasy genre. Pet Dragons 2 is an app on facebook you might like...dragons, tournaments, politics, brutality...much like A Song of Ice and Fire? I may be lying a little, but it really is a pretty awesome app!

1:49. The camera adjusts the background to be a bit sharper for a moment, and if you look closely you'll notice that "Fool's Fate" of the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb is sitting on mine and Tom's coffee table. Fantasy FTW
have you ever read Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series? GREAT Fantasy!!!...if ya don't mind taking 14 books and 1 prequel to finish a story...SOON to be 14 that is...
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is a terrible read for anyone, not just someone losing interest in fantasy. If you put your diafragma of your lens wider open, the foces should be better because more of the capture is sharp.

your new mic is also clipping quite excessively. ;-( but your video looks quite lovely. ;-D and your content is ace as usual.
fecklessman 11 months ago
@fecklessman aah, sorry about the clipping! I'm so used to yelling into my old mic. It's a learning experience!
frezned 11 months ago
@frezned definitely. the audio quality does seem to have improved, though, so that's positive. ;-D
