  • .....i can't hold it in any longer. marry me!? lol sorry you had me at "dragons, wizards" haha anyways im a big fan, keep doing your videos! :D

  • Magical wizards? Can you have non-magical wizards?

  • @sajoth I believe Frezned has said it in a comment. A Squib =P

  • I discussed this topic with friends yesterday, even with dragon age and mass effect as examples. Now that I think about it, one of the others also watches your videos... And so there is no great coincidence after all.

  • Game of Thrones!!!

  • Dune- Frank Herbert

    Such good sci-fi.

  • Explesed. 0.10s

  • Just play skyrim, you will come back to our side

  • @danielrobwright Join the dark side of the picnic, danielrobwright... We have tiny sandwiches!

  • SYFY RULES

  • BWAHAHA HA AAA... And I don't know why

  • When I'm depressed, I just watch frezned videos.

    So cheery.

  • "it's not really a war... it's a picnic... with sides."

  • tom, i like your hair. just saying :3 k bye

  • Mass Effect is lame.

  • Yes, relativity is Einsteins fault. It wouldnt be a thing if he never existed.

  • if you look at the headline, it says 5words, but i thought it said swords. ;o yeahhhhhhh

  • If you ignore the FTL issues, lololol.

  • I love being a nerd and you just put the longest running arguement to rest haha.

  • this guy should be 100x more youtube-famous than he is...seriously.

  • i like you my friend. i really do :D

  • i <3 Game of Thrones. its AMAZING. cant wait for the next series in the story!!

i burst into flames with excitement too :D

  • i <3 Game of Thrones. its AMAZING. cant wait for the next series in the story!!

  • fantasy is a sub-ganra of science fiction.

  • I would have a picnic with your teeth.. Yea, I'm one of those people..

  • you said explessed at 0.10... lol

  • Never heard of you before...until my friend posted your video. Not too bad. But MAN do you talk fast

  • haha 5words. it looks like swords.

  • ahhhhhh now, thats more then 5 words! :L

  • Just great.

  • Otherlannnddd <3 <3

    BRILLIANT books, those!

  • I must say that I can somewhat empathize with you, but at the same time, this video makes me very sad, for the both of us.

  • You look like Michael Cera + Micheal J Fox.

  • @MrPoopythedog Don't know who Michael Cera is, but yes, Tom does look a little bit like Michael J. Fox... poor Tom, lol!

  • The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant aren't exactly a positive example of the fantasy genre. :/

  • lmfao i love your transitions!

  • But the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are fantastic!

  • You talk so fast! But I love you.

  • I'm a fantasy girl, but man do i like me some Ray Bradbury.

  • "I'm such an awkward person" .-' ' - . ~Translating into Gay terms.........~~~~ "I like huge dick and big black men".

  • I get the feeling that you would like EVE online. Serious internet spaceships with epic complexity but you need to be quite patient, its a game that you will either love or hate. I love it. Highly suggest you try it out :)

  • I love the culture novels... you're right about the death but, actually, that's pretty much what I like in a book. Lots of death and carnage. But I also liked his other non sci-fi novels, like 'the bridge' even though 'the bridge' was... yeah. So essentially I'm never really worried about liking one more than the other when one of my favourite authors is famous in both genres.

  • i think i just got mind fuked?

  • 0:10 "Explessed"?

  • You should write ;P

  • I love syfi and fantasy

  • @SpikeAndCherryCheek SyFi is the channel, Sci-Fi is the genre

    GET IT RIGHT OR GTFO

  • oh gooosh y know! i used to be really into magic and fantasy stuff: i have swords and a crossbow in my room, I used to disguise do roleplaying set in other worlds, play way too many video games... stuff like that! And now I... still wanna do it but find myself kinda lazy towards it. Like it attracks me because of the good memories it brings, but not for itself. Oh, I'm a girl. That brings more nerdness into the... thing xD

  • I love Fantasy AND Si-Fi; they're both amazing to me :) But Elves are always going to have a special place in my heart.... Though, so will Dr. who.

  • But there's a new Elder Scrolls coming out! It's coming out on 11.11.11! So you should definitely rekindle your love of fantasy because Oblivion just got DRAGONS.

  • The whole idea about Iain M. Banks' Culture is just totally awesome. Reading his Culture short story "State of the Art" convinced me of the idea that, if an extra-terrestrial society has the tech to come over to our little planet, then they will certainly also have the tech to make us notice them in almost exactly the same way that we notice nitrogen molecules in the air. Also, if they have the sophistication to travel to our planet, then there's really nothing of interest for them here...

  • Same thing happened with me. Epic fantasy = Frank Beddor. Epic sci-fi = Douglas Adams. Also... Best. Transition. Ever.

  • Magic wizards? It's magic within magic! Maginception! :o

  • The exact same thing happened to me. I mean, I still love both, but I started drifting towards sci-fi around the time I started to realize just how awesome science really is. I mean, magic is cool and everything, but dude. SCIENCE. It's out there.

  • oh lord your finger nails they they scare me O_O

  • Have you not read anything by Philip K. Dick? I assume you must have - If so, what is your opinion of him?

  • ELFQUEST.

  • You have TINY fingernails. Anyone else book that at 1:30 ?

  • I love sci-fi. My favorite author in the genre is Theodore Sturgeon. Most of his books were written in the 50s, but that makes it all more interesting to read considering how small people's brains were back then.

  • Iain banks's culture novels are amazing.... I should realy check if he's brought out a new one, The main characters don't die off THAT much. Not that death is permanent.

  • 11/11/11 for Skyrim

  • You should read The Algebraist. Also by Banks, not set in the Culture universe, doesn't have any immersionbreaking FTL travel. No sir, they do all their interstellar travel via wormhole.

  • LOLL Once again, favoriting for the transition. <3

  • I started reading Otherland based on your... words that you used. And I'm enjoying it. :)

  • Hard core sci-fi? Australian writer? And a journo? Try reading John Birmingham's sci fi books.

  • you say wizards and magic-wizards but aren't all wizards magic ?

  • i just spent the last few weeks getting my mind blown thanks to this video and the books mentioned in it

  • you're a narcissist, homeboy

  • Turn off auto focus, please! You've got 1080p video that is no higher quality than the 360p version, cause your camera is spazzing out trying to focus on your hands!

  • Oh, this is an issue I can actually relate with. I had a nerdgasm when The Wise Man's Fear came out, and I will again when A Dance With Dragons is released. However, the Otherland series is easily one of my favorites. I'll have to check out the other series you mentioned... A Song of Ice and Fire prepped for watching all my favorite character die. So did Gurren Laggen.

  • You ain't got no pancake mix

  • when you said you were into "fantasy" my mind immediately went something dirty

  • why is Rebecca Black - Friday one of the suggestions?

  • like a picnic with sides... or like a school dance sides boys vs girls...

  • :)

  • I never quite understood what the 5 words were in this video. There seemed to be quite alot of words really. But in a good way.

  • I can almost completly relate

Used to be into Runescape, now I'm all about Halo/Mass Effect/anything with lazers

  • Sci-fi = awesome. Fantasy = awesome.

Sci-fi + fantasy = Oh yes. Yay. Ultimate awesome.

    Think about it. Magical star-fighters.....

  • Wow, that's weird =\

I never really liked sci-fi, maybe for the reason that it COULD happen, while Fantasy is a form of escapism and things which are unusual.

Maybe I'll like sci-fi in the future, once I've seen a lot more fantasy shit and therefore it will stop being unusual and different and just be "oh yeah, that's how shit is" while sci-fi is constantly evolving, as it has little restraints which it has to abide by, as fantasy does.

  • I have to say, this guy really use to fuck me off on youtube, but I rather like him now. :)

  • @Griffinltd uh, why thank you!

  • @Griffinltd ...? short fuse much?

  • Dragon Swords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its not a war.. its just a picnic with sides

  • 0:10 expLessed expLessed expLessed expLessed

...but you're still awesome frezned, you're still awesome.

  • doctor who. it's like sci-fi with the romanticism.

  • I want to read the Culture novels, but do you need to read those in order? If anyone can help me out that'd be great!! :)

  • @11CheshireCat Reading them in order is not really necessary, each book is a story by itself. Although in the (historical) background some things might overlap between books (the Idiran war, some characters (Diziet Sma, Cheradenine Zakalwe)). Although I completely love all the Culture novels, Excession really blew me away. Have fun reading it!

  • I like sci-fi-satire. So basically anything by P.Dick

  • Your attempt at a seductive face is pathetically arousing.

  • A game of netball eh?

I bags Gandalf for my team.

  • I second (or third, or whatever) the Moon is a Harsh Mistress rec. Also, Vernor Vinge is great, particularly (well, these are the only ones I've read :P) A Deepness in the Sky and Fire Upon the Deep. And Dune. Also, Calvin and Hobbes when they go to Mars.

  • I feel the fantasy versus Sci Fi battle is over its really both of them against Paranormal Romance. Vampires. Also read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress you will love it.

  • @ArwinUndomiel IT'S LIKE YOU'RE MY TWIN. OR SOUL MATE

  • you remind me so much of Scott Pilgrim

  • @frezned Have you ever thought about participating in NaPoWriMo AND NaNoWriMo?

  • I like sci-fifa. Problem solved. On a more series note, more book recommendation V D O's!

  • Turn off autofocus?

  • I've definitely been more on the side of fantasy - Terry Pratchett and George R.R. Martin kick so much butt - but I definitely appreciate me some sci-fi too. As long as it's good I'll read it. As for otherland, while I enjoyed it, I thought it was too long (same prob with shadowmarch series tbh). Still, I thought there were echoes of shadowland in the lamentably cancelled Caprica. Would loved to have seen more of that.

  • HOLY FLYING PIECES OF POO

had no idea they were making some sort of hbo thing with game of thrones! waghhh my brother and i were JUST reminiscing about scandalous readings of those as youths yesterday.

HOW AM I EVER GOING TO WATCH THIS!

awh man, just made my night- the trailer makes it look ridiculously epic.

  • I cannot for the life of me figure out what you're saying at the beginning of this.

  • read enders game!

  • when i was a boy

    i liked fantasy novels

    now i like sci-fi

  • I just got super excited when I got the email telling me you uploaded a video, then super sad because I realised that it was the one I watched 4 days ago. I still watched it all the way through again though, lol

  • I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT DRAGON AGE AND MASS EFFECT! I've just recently been going through the same realization...I've always been a fantasy person, but recently I've really been into scifi. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. XD

  • What's wrong with your eyebrows?

  • "When I was a boy I liked fantasy novels. Now I like sci-fi." = about 12 words.

  • SCI FI FTW! Plus yay for talking fast!

  • Explessed is my new word.

  • I like sci-fi AND fantasy...

  • Absolutely love Otherland!

  • I can't wait for april 17th!!!

  • july 12th is my birthday :) just sayin'

  • I love your voice....... :|

  • explessed? 0:10

  • To be able to sum up what you are aiming to say in a single sentence, but still expanding generally means that you have a thesis an then go on to support it.

  • I've always loved both and never really understood the whole "versus" aspect between the two, especially since the lines are so easily blurred. When I was little I was massively into the /idea of sci-fi, then I slid into fantasy more because the really good sci-fi works tended to be slightly too sophisticated for a little kid to truly get, and now I'm back to sci-fi again. But I hold them both close to my nerdy heart.

  • All I can see is your room moving closer and further away

  • there's a battle between the two?

  • Game of Thrones :D :D :D I'm glad you haven't completely deserted the fantasy genre. Pet Dragons 2 is an app on facebook you might like...dragons, tournaments, politics, brutality...much like A Song of Ice and Fire? I may be lying a little, but it really is a pretty awesome app!

  • Isaac Asimov <3

  • tom im using your microfinance as a source for my essay but i dont know your last name so i just put "tom frezned" or rather "Frezned, Tom"

is your last name something you keep private? should i just leave it? i dont mind i just thought id tell you :D and i hope you dont mind me using your video!

  • @myARTjournal If you watch enough of his videos, you can learn his last name. Assuming it's not a pseudonym. Hint: Watch "Coincidence Story Theatre."

  • dragonswords.

  • @frezned

It looks super fun but yeah...after looking into it that stuff ain't cheap. I'm a-feared. Or rather, my wallet is. Cause it's sentient. That's normal right?

  • When you said 'Game of Thrones' I was like :O ajhswkjfdskjbsjbdskjbsdkjsb!!!!

  • 1:49. The camera adjusts the background to be a bit sharper for a moment, and if you look closely you'll notice that "Fool's Fate" of the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb is sitting on mine and Tom's coffee table. Fantasy FTW

  • Read any Robert Jordan in your fantasy loving days? ( Not meant to sound sexual at all... Just so you know...)

  • can't we just have orcs in giant dragon-shaped, fire-breathing starfighters?

  • lol haha

  • I rep Fantasy 'til death!

  • It's not really a war...it's a picnic...with sides

  • have you ever read Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series? GREAT Fantasy!!!...if ya don't mind taking 14 books and 1 prequel to finish a story...SOON to be 14 that is...

  • Things that are wonderful and possible are just doubly wonderful

  • man, I love those transitions

  • The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is a terrible read for anyone, not just someone losing interest in fantasy. I forced myself to finish the first trilogy and then when the fourth book opened with more complaining and self loathing on the part of our dear friend Thomas I set the book down, something that up until that point I had never done to a book without the intention of finishing it.

  • Fantasy > Sci-fi

    Sorry :(

  • @Amemti I think both fantasy and SF are part of a "Fantastic" uber-genre. In a certain sense one might say that SF is fantasy with the magic explained (In that respect, I would say Star Wars is fantasy, and Star Trek is SF). Of course, a magician never tells how his trick works, but in the end we all want to know!

  • "a picnic, with sides" i love you. :P

  • The next time I can't get to sleep, i'm gonna put one of your videos on and just listen to your voice =P

  • Sometimes I don't know what you're saying...

That makes me think that you're trying to hypnotise me.

  • Whoo A Song of Ice and Fire love!

  • The Otherland series by Ted Williams is really good. I can thank my dad for letting me borrow his books so I could read them.

  • So ... close ... to the camera. O.O

  • Awesome transition. XD

  • 13 words: when I was a boy I liked fantasy novels, now I like si-fi

  • Dragonsword. That one.

  • You've pleased me with you sci-fi talk. Please do it again. It makes you look so seductive when you do. Everyone's talking about it. Didn't you know?

  • I love sci fi. Have you read any Greg Bear or Alfred Bester? I keep meaning to read some Iain M. Banks. I started reading his non sci-fi book, "The Wasp Factory", but ended up stopping because my big brother ruined the ending for me. I've never read much fantasy.

  • These transitions are hurting my brain.

  • Hoorah! Frezned has joined Team Sci-Fi! :P

  • Kudos for having read "The Gap Series".

Angus Thermopyle? (it is years since I read them about the time of their release) and Morn Hyland are amazing characters.

  • Transitions: Clothed to Naked

  • You said 'explessed' and i thought it was cute.

  • "its not a war, its more like a picnic..... with sides"

you made my day better :D

  • You have such a strong accent, I wonder if I do too and just don't realise it :P

  • If you put your diafragma of your lens wider open, the foces should be better because more of the capture is sharp.

  • dragon age is mad

  • Your nostrils flare about every three words when you talk :D

  • go nerds 8D we shall rule to world. but i swear they like hide away. i hardly know any nerds :( no one wants to learn the element song or memorise pi with me..its quite sad. but i can proudly say i have the first verse down and can currently remeber 21 dp XD (goal is 50+)

  • @missdimples666

    I love you.

    (oh bugger, that was un-nerdly)

  • hey don't talk smack about netball!! :P

  • what are the games that come out!! is it portal 2 in April but what is in july!!!

  • its hard not to like si-fi

  • Wait...what were the five words?

  • Awesome!

  • your new mic is also clipping quite excessively. ;-( but your video looks quite lovely. ;-D and your content is ace as usual.

  • @fecklessman aah, sorry about the clipping! I'm so used to yelling into my old mic. It's a learning experience!

  • @frezned definitely. the audio quality does seem to have improved, though, so that's positive. ;-D

  • nooo, this new love of yours for futuristic mechanical things has made it difficult for me to relate to you :(

  • OMG MASS EFFECT

    BEST. GAME. EVER.

  • Dragon Age does NOT suck.

I appreciate Mass Effect and Dragon Age equally. I'm saddened by you Frezned.

  • @GnashMash don't be saddened! Be glad that you can appreciate sucky games. More things for you to enjoy in the world!
