@LadyScorpio39 Lara Jill Miller was 14 when she joined the cast of Gimme A Break. She looked alot younger than she was. She could have passed for 10 if needed.
i know she was in her early teens. thats why i said, she always acted much younger than she was, or at least seemed to anyway. she acted like she was 6 instead of 12, like her character was supposed to be.
it was made clear in one of the first episodes Nell was friends with the girls' mother, Margaret. When Margaret was dying Nell promised she would stay with the children. As the series progressed Nell went back to school- by the last season (after the girls were grown) she was working as an editor for a publishing company in New York.
I know people unaware may instinctively dismiss this show as a throwback to Beulah or other black maid stereotypes, but that was not the case.
i was 4 and every show i watech as a kid i youtube for my 9 year odl to watch...they taught great morrals and had great messages hidden inside a fun show! you dont see that now
There are a lot of things that you saw on TV once upon a time that you do not see now! Sad but true! My favorite series of all-times was "Mad About You". Helen Hunt forever! In my opinion, after that show's seventh's and last year, TV went steadily downhill! Oh well!
Nell Carter got a lot of flack from people of color because they saw Nell as nothing more than a maid until NC said that she WAS NOT A MAID, but that she was fullfilling a promise that she made to the girls' dying mother that she would watch over them when she passed.
Just watching this show for the first time since it was on the air and I'd never realized how progressive it was for its time... a gay cop mentioned on the first episode when "Dynasty" premiered this same year and could barely utter the word "homosexual" (I believe "fruit" was used). Also, the bussing issue w/regard to education - Brava, "Gimme a Break!"
There is no question that raising these issues was brave at the time. However, now they would be looked at as the minor league! Just listen to the issues that get casually mentioned on "Seinfeld" or "Friends"! Wow!
I agree with mistyblue363, but I don't expect anymore shows like this from the Networks, it wouldn't be a bad idea if someone used youtube to lunch shows like these.
@jevonk Me too. My children love the old shows. All of them. They were clean, family oriented, safe. I don't watch any regular television cable or the foolish digital box either. It is sad. God bless YOUTUBE

Yeah, this is the episode where Nell teaches Sam to how to box using the Nintendo Wii. Katie ends up stealing a blue ray player, and they all watch episodes of Survivor.
wow, this show was behind the times.A black housekeeper taking care of three girls encompassing every stereotype:pretty sexpot, brainy nerd, and a tomboy.
