I am dependant on welfare. I am a university graduate with a good degree, I apply for work constantly, I have been on a variety of training programs, I have a clean record, in fact I volunteer with young offenders to help reduce crime in my local area. I don't smoke, rarely drink and I don't do drugs. I am very poor, at which point have I chosen to be this way?

Cutting women and children off their benefits because of a theory that they bought drugs with the money because they tested positive for the use of drugs is not the answer. Pragmatically, Florida's experiment was a huge waste given that only 2% tested positive. Constitutionally, it violated 4th Amendment rights. Morally, it took money from Florida's public treasury and gave it indirectly to Gov. Rick Scott as he owns many urgent care clinics who specialize in drug testing. What's up with "test for VA benefits"? People getting VA benefits have EARNED them, unlike welfare or food stamp recipients. Military guys spend their whole careers adhering to the rules and getting drug tested. Don't tell them they need to continue to be tested once they are out of the service. Again, VA benefits are EARNED, not given.

Your not seeing the big picture. You can't really get on welfare these days unless you are caring for a child. My father was a crackhead growing up and we counted on those food stamps (the ones he didn't sell for crack) each and every week. I wouldn't have eaten if it weren't for welfare. I could have went into custody with the state, but thats MUCH worse. Think about who your really hurting here.....

@purplesnails22 I work hard for a living and pay horrible taxes. People are poor because its a choice, These welfare recipients got themselves there now they can get themselves off welfare. There are plenty of training programs available for the poor. You just need a clean record and are able to pass a simple test. There is also the military. I probably paid more in taxes last year than your entire income and I am sick of paying taxes!

I am dependant on welfare. I am a university graduate with a good degree, I apply for work constantly, I have been on a variety of training programs, I have a clean record, in fact I volunteer with young offenders to help reduce crime in my local area. I don't smoke, rarely drink and I don't do drugs. I am very poor, at which point have I chosen to be this way?

If you do have a degree which I doubt, many people would not hire you because you have indicated by the grammar in your comment you just don't care. You must have something wrong not to be able to obtain a job with a University education and all the training programs you say you have completed It is your choice not to correct your deficiencies instead of relying on a handout from the government!

It's a youtube comment... not a formal letter, I don't apply for jobs through youtube lol. I have a 2:1 Hons degree in BSc Developmental Psychology obtained at The University of Glamorgan in Wales. My "deficiencies" are that I am young and thus have little work experience, even 5 months of unpaid labour isn't enough to compete with older job seekers. I also do not have a car and I cannot work for less than my rent. There are 9 job seekers for every 1 job where I live.

I agree, but this Rick dude shouldn't be so flamboyant if you want to get your opinion taken seriously. I believe that this is a great move by the state of Florida. I also think that it shouldn't be limited to one drug test. Recipients of such benefits should be subject to random drug test also. People who apply for a job often times take a drug test and as soon as they passed, they start to engage in their drug habit.

@ReallyRick I agree with this act, but I don't agree with taking away V.A benefits. Unlike welfare, those receiving ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING, whereas in welfare recipients, didn't do shit.
The V.A benefits is like a paycheck for work they already put in, so you can't take that away. Also remember, a lot of Vets got addicted to cocaine, unfairly, cause we didn't know what we know about Morphine back then, which has cocaine in it, something we know now, but not back then.

@jfsfrnd That's not the "rules" that they have to play by. The rules that everyone has to play by is this, "Nothing is free, and everything has a price". Sometimes that price can be money, sometimes it could be that you have to wave your constitutional rights. You don't have to. As long as there is choice, there is no violation. Just cause your in a bad situation, don't mean you have no choice. A man being tried for murder, he still has the choice of accept the plea (and give up his 5th) or not.

Cutting women and children off their benefits because of a theory that they bought drugs with the money because they tested positive for the use of drugs is not the answer. So now you have 10% of the Michigan welfare population (mostly women and children) homeless on the street. What have you gained? Who are you going to go after next?
