My 7 year-old brother,he never go to bed on time, always running around at 10pm and messing with my homework.1day,I watched Inception,I had an idea, hoped hes gonna sleep at 10,buy a Inception disk for him, then buy one of these Newton's cradle, give him and tell him thats he have a ability to enter someones dream if hes sleeping at 10 and this is gonna be his teetotum (like dicaprio's) to prove that's hes in the dream or not.The result:hes now sleeping at 12 cuz he afraid im gona steal his dream.FK
air will stop them, unless your in a vaccum they won't go on forever (and even then, i'm don't think so since i doubt it's a perfectly elastic collision)
Anyone know where you can get one that will keep going for a while and not just a minute or two. I know it will stop eventually, but I want one that has low resistance strings and high mass balls...My boyfriend has been bugging me for one and I promised one for his birthday, All the one's I've found so far online have been toys for children or just gimicks so only go for a short amount of time before you have to set them going again..
@azwan1992 I don't think that is the reason why it stops. In my view the main reasons are air resistance and for the biggest part gravity. Gravity constanty wants to stabilize it.
@Pr3miuM Gravity is a conservative force, and air resistance doesn't play a big role in this case. The main reason the cradle stops is because energy dissipates as heat wherever there is friction. (At the end of the strings and where balls collide).
Man do I hate people who go around correcting other people's spelling. Of course, most of the time they do this is when they have nothing left to argue about.
the collisions wouldnt be perfectly elastic therfore some kineticenergy would be converted into other forms like sound n heat etc. prety gnarly though.. i like these things
Well teorichaly it should never stop, because there shouldn't be any loss of energy (kinetic). But actually, there's a bit of loss due to friction with air, etc.
@joonasal for a second I thought you had actually misspelled 'perpetual motion' but then I realized it was just the same thing in another language. Would you happen to be from canada?

it will stop, as energy will lose to surrounding as heat, and sound.
