By watching this film we all get 20 credit hours towards our master's degree in Torgology at The Master University. Go fighting Togos! The Master approves of this!
Tom Neyman (The Master) and Jackey Neyman (Debbie) are still alive as far as I know. I have no clue about the others though. The only person I had knowledge of that died was John Reynolds (Torgo).
Oh thanks for posting this. Was reading the trivia on IMdb and the background story is so bizarre, I just can't get enough of Manos it would seem, thanks this is really funny to watch!
I have an aunt who lives in El Paso, I've been there many times, but I don't think my kinfolk know anything about Manos! Also, I'm kind of arfaid to go to El Paso right now because of the drug wars in nearby Juarez!
At 6:20 Rosenblum says "I don't remember how many months afterwards, but he (Torgo) blew his brains out". Reynolds shot himself in the head with a shotgun exactly one month BEFORE THE PREMIER. How do you not remember that? And if you'll remember from the MST3K version, in the first break (parody of the movie), Servo says "you're showing footage from the film and it makes me want to blow my brains out!" Obviously a morbid reference to Reynolds' suicide. Did he do it because of the film? Manos!!!
@DonParsley When MST3K aired the episode, very little was known about the film. Therefore I don't think Servo's quote was meant to reference the real life suicide. I think that would be too morbid for MST3K. As for Reynolds, it was said that he had problems that led to his suicide and the film wasn't the reason. There was also rumors that both the wife and the "make out girl" committed suicide because of the film and those claims were found to be untrue.
@Scream358 I disagree because later Servo makes another obscure reference to the cast:
/watch?v=Hvji14ZQdqA&feature=related
@ 7:10 he says "If you'd like to contact Harold P. Warren, look in the yellow pages for the fertilizer corporation of Texas." If they knew Hal Warren was a fertilizer salesman, they surely knew of Reynolds' suicide. Further, I don't trust this Rosenblum guy. Later in this piece, when he says those women fondled his genitals... This guy may be full of crap, you think?
@DonParsley I can only speak on what I saw in this short documentary, but I think Rosenblum was pretty legit. He did seem crude at times, but I take most of what he said to be true for the most part. As for MST3K, I remember the fertilzer salesman line. But I think they wouldn't "knowingly" make a joke about a real life suicide. I think they told the joke without thinking about it in relation to the suicide. It probably was just a general comment about the film.
@Scream358 Crow also makes a comment in the beginning of the film, "Joel, this is going to turn into a snuff film isn't it?" A hilarious remark, but it goes to my point of there being something abnormal about this film, other than its poor quality. Also, if no-one is aware, MANOS: THE SEARCH FOR VALLEY LODGE is due to start filming early next year, in El Paso, Texas. Can't wait for Mike, Kevin, and Bill to riff that one. MANOS!!!!!!!
OMG Bernie freakin' Rosenblum, as I live and breathe! Wow, I was his student when this guy taught photography class for at least two semesters at El Paso Community College in the mid-80's.
... I still love the smell of film developer to this day.
At the time, I had no idea "who he was", until years later I saw the movie on MST3000. I remember seeing the kid in the car making out and thinking, "Damn, he looks familiar... Could it be!?".
The movie is completely WRONG by all standards, but at the same time it proves that all this standards and so-called classics or good cinema doesnt really mean anything.
The more you push the medium, the better.
Yes this movie is very bad, but ist also very fucking brave.
I guess if "Shadow of the Vampire" can claim that Max Schreck didn't exist but was an actual vampire...these guys can make it sound like there's only one person left from this film...
@MushroomBluex He wrote an article in Mimosa magazine on the film and talked to a number of surviving cast and crew members. Article was titled "The Hand that Time Forgot" and it ran in Mimosa 18, published in May 1996.
Bernie Rosemblum was the only person from the movie they could find for an interview? Jackie Neyman (who played Debbie) iss till alive. I guess she doesn't want to be associated with the film.
How the fuck do they worship this pile of ass so much? They make the guy who made this sound like a visionary when he made the most monotonous film possible to make.
Why? Because it's unique. No other film has ever come close to being as inept and ridiculous as Manos, and for that it deserves praise and recognition.
I did not attend the WORLD PREMIERE, but I checked the newspaper listings and went on a Saturday afternoon.... I thought it was going to be a scary movie, and after about ten minutes or so I started to giggle a little.

The Plaza Theatre in El Paso is going to feature "Manos" at a film festival in August. From the El Paso Times:
Plaza Theatre officials have released the schedule of films that will be shown at the festival Aug 14 - 24.
Films such as "Blade Runner," "Casablanca," and "Manos: The Hands of Fate" will be shown.
Entertainment Weekly named "Manos: The Hands of Fate" the worst film ever made.
