I wonder if you can include something similar to a theremin into this to be able to produce effects such as vibrato, while still playing the notes relative to the interrupted lasers.
I am really interested to get a laser harp, can you please tell me how i can purchase one that is fully funtional to use with a MIDI software or synthesiser? I am very serious in this as i have already bought a few lasers such as the kam dmx, flash lights, led lights smoke machine, etc. Please contact me for any info because your work is brilllllliant mate.
I like to see coments in here that look like they were made in the 50´s:
THIS IS THE FUTURE!!!
As if this was some ground breaking discovery or something...Dudes it is cool and all, and very interesting, but this is technology that has been around for ages, this will not get you laid. Do you want to get laid? Start washing the dishes or cleaning after yourselves around the house, thats what really turns woman on...oh right, I forgot most of you are kids.
i wanna build this over the summer, only the cost is killing me... how much would the whole project cost? is there a substitute for the lasers that would make the project cheaper maybe...?
love this kind of stuff, gonna be building one at uni soon, you also might wanna check out a french dude called Jean Michael Jarr. He does huge laser shows across the world and uses a similar harp
you might be a nerd if your having sex with a girl, and speaking another language doesnt turn you on..... unless that language is C/C++ !!can i get a nerdy thumbs up!?
@shobley The scanning does upset the camera a bit, but with careful tuning of the ILDA-compatible laser's PPS number as well as adjusting the software so that about 30 frames (the Mightex Systems camera runs at almost 200fps) must be dark before note-off is sent to the synth. Otherwise some frames will be captured when that certain beam is not being "drawn" by the scanner and the software will send rapid note-on note-off to the synth, creating a mess.
it's obviously the same as a synth (it's digital...) and has 10 virtual string instead of the standard 47 of an acustic harp.
i don't know if you can change the pitch of a single virtual string, but generally i see this intrument as a cool show, not as an expressive and "ALIVE" music instrument.
i made one for my high school engineering class. it was fuckin awesome. other people made shit projects like gluing a camera on a toy helicopter. we blew everyone out of the water and needless to say we got an A+
Hey man, I'm impressed and inspired by your incredible work on this project. I'm studying Music Technology at university and I would love to build one of these myself. Would I be able to get most of the components for this beast in Maplin Electronics. Also if I were to get the schematics do they go through the building process stepwise?
Since I don't sell a complete kit, it's difficult to produce a stepwise guide - there are schematics and a build diary (with pictures) of me completing mine, but yours might be different due to the parts you buy and circuit boards you use.
im not a smart kid but ive seen a kipkay video and i think when the laser is interrupted it triggers a note its like a garage door sensor... btw im 12
This was actually invented by Bernard Szajner. He doesn't have the original laser harp anymore after JMJ had bastardized it. In Szajner's own words, he destroyed it "in true rock 'n roll fashion". In my own personal opinion, all other laser harps are rubbish next to the sound Szajner's produced.
Actually, its not. Laser harps have been around for quite a while. They're pretty easy to use. All you do is stop the path of one of the lasers with your hand, which sends messages to the synth.
i had a cool thought; since the sound is actually played by a program when the laser is broken, you could play any sound, right? it would be cool if you programmed each beam to play one of the word sets from Daft Punkz - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, or similar songs. the possiblities are endless! :)>
