Thanks for VEVO, advertising a mass-produced corporate whore like Katy Perry as a banner ad alongside the work of a genius like William S. Burroughs. Thanks for crass commercialism.
And what are you truly thankful for, Mr. Burroughs? American is not a perfect country. None of us are as individuals, either. But she is, indeed, a great country. As many of us are as individuals as well. I'm blessed and thankful to live here, and I'm blessed and thankful to know some of the most wonderful people in the world, who call themselves, "American".
Well worth watch... Citizen USA: A 50 State Roadtrip
I have ADHD and often have multiple tabs open on my browser. Anyway, I happened to have this video open with Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" playing at the same time. William Burroughs voice and LZ's music is just an epic experience when played together. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
It's so funny to me that people bring up Burroughs' own mistakes as an argument against what he brings up. Like the world's biggest genocide doesn't matter at all. Of course we all know it doesn't to white people. How do Burroughs' naysayers account for all the ugly things that America has done to innocent people all over the world? Oh yeah, I forgot THEY DON'T AND NEVER WILL!!!
@subsamadhi I agree that the acts of early "american settelers" are often forgotten around Thanksgiving. You don't need a college education to realize that white people (myself being white) seem to want to point the finger at Hitler for comminting genocide, but they choose tocall their own ancestors actions "Manifest Destiny"
@inredress yeah, thanks for committing the world's biggest genocide against Native Americans. 23 million dead Native Americans. The first time I heard of Burroughs was at a LACMA retrospective when I was 14. This was the first of a loop of films that I saw that day. I'd be different today if I hadn't seen it I'm sure. What would probably be the next most influential thing from that show would be the dream machine. I hadn't done any drugs at the time, but it was damn interesting. My dad, who hadn't done drugs either, almost OD'd on the damn thing.
I play this every Thanksgiving just before we sit down to eat. I usually get teary . makes me sad that we started with such high ideals and did so little with them.
He loved America, just hated what mindless corporate lies that this great country is based around, swimming in it's vast seas gleeing happily even though the waters this country is swimming in are far past contaminated with false hopes and dreams that have been shattered oh so many times. The lie that it believes. Burroughs was just as American as any good ol' patriot, he just comes from a different life lived. God bless him even though he is not really religious.
Thank you Mr Burroughs. Its so sad that people see critical thinking as a bad thing. Read a book! ( or 1000) I believe he was as american as apple pie.An AMERICAN writer. Lived in Kansas, and loved Americans, Indians, women, men, children, junkies, the poor, and I have heard he even showed kindness to strangers.

thanks for burroughs- too bad too few understand his importance and influence. you think he hates america. and he does. this america- the twisted, depraved version. look around you fools...
Leave it to the likes of @arubberball to apply the polemic discourse to Burroughs. Clearly this person never read Burroughs, never ventured outside the Establishment walls, and ate ever last morsel of nationalistic, jingoistic juice fed to them by it's mother. I assume the quote about "Christian women with their angry twisted faces" or some such quote applies here....whether you are male or female. This isn't liberal or conservative (which arubberball would be unable to define). Lost u r.
I remember seeing this on MTV Europe back in the early nineties (back when MTV used to play music)
It blew me away and has only become more prescient with each passing year.
I post it up in my blog every year and dedicate it to Burroughs' memory and everyone who has been shat, used up or abused by the great lie of liberty, prosperity and inclusivity for all; especially in these cash-strapped times.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Thanks for freedom of speech...love these bitter liberals, that never can point to another shinning example. America has its flaws, but over all we are good, and honorable people.
@arubberball The neo-liberal is about as liberal as Archie Bunker. They are doctrinaire, intolerant of dissent and essentially unable to think outside of the talking points they get at the Daily Pus and Mania Matters. impressionable. gullible and driven by a deep seated hatred of western civilization, nee Christianity. That may be why they identify with Muslims, Castro and every other species of arrogant ideologue and totalitarian. Neo-Liberalism is a dangerous auto-immune disease.
@HomoNoMore, but mostly to all you Neo Cons with your bullshit values relfecting war, hatred and the so-called American Dream. We are a cancer. A bunch of cock-sucking pansies shit out of our mothers wombs. We support the fags, more specifically, I support the fags and their butt-fucking antics. I want gay kids. We will always be here. Being liberal and progressive, because just like you own a Walmart bought gun, we own our voices. We are a cancer. We are Americans. JUST. LIKE. YOU.
@arubberball Of course...The problem isn't the problem. It's the people mentioning the problem. Typically American, If we pretend shit's not fucked up, it's not fucked up.If we lambaste and label those who are effected enough to speak up about it, calling them "Bitter Liberals" and "Haters," they will just get fed up and stop, right?
@johnnywalker1 it is what it is... for your sake, i'll just call him bitter. the majority of the sarcastic thanks he dishes out, stems from progressive/liberal elitist polices in the first place. unlike some, i'll defend your right to speak out, if need be to the death. washington is corrupt( democrats and republicans alike), but to say the country is rotten to the core is, not true. if you think that, then i feel sorry for you.
@arubberball But America IS rotten. It's been demolished by closed-minded, unwelcoming people.
We meddle in other people's shit. If you want to be communist, be communist, as long as you don't bother us.
We worship people who haven't a sense of what is important.
We raise our children to be rude, unthankful, and over-protected. When people actually punished their children appropriately, we raised an artistic, brilliant country.
@arubberball Now that we don't punish them, they've become lazy, unwilling people who have no idea what is going on in the world. They're ignorant, stuck up. When children have more power than their parents, there's a problem.
We hide current events, and when people find them, they are arrested or the facts are exaggerated in order to scare the people.
We wait until EVERYBODY knows and is affected by the problem before we try to fix it.
@arubberball WRONG! This country IS rotten to the core and the bullshit it used to feed the machine for all these years has gunked up the cogs...Thus the sound we now hear of it's screech to a halt.
Burroughs was a genius. This is actually pretty mild. My favorite Burroughs quote: "This is a war universe. War all the time. That is its nature. There may be other universes based on all sorts of other principles, but ours seems to be based on war and games."
@nixiedixie I always dug his quote: "The history of the world is the history of idiocy highlighted by a few morons who stand out as comparative geniuses." Or something like that. The man's words were pure gold.
@binstence Well, your literary style as evidenced by your lame comment leaves a lot to be desired; namely any measure of ability. So it's ironic that you would even attempt to weigh in on the words of a literary icon and semi-religious figure. What brand of asshole are you anyway? Neo-con, Christian queer-hater, patriotic douchebag American who fails to see the obvious --- that this country is rotten to the core and as a result is beginning to rot away. The bare lies shining through...
Thanks for mindless American idiots with no fucking concept of reality or the rest of the world while artists and poets die penniless because the mind is a terrible and threatening place in which to dwell.
@verbaud If artists and poets are dying penniless perhaps they should find another line of work, find a patron who will subsidize them or produce art that people want to buy. Where is it written that one should be able to make a living at whatever one chooses to do?
where is it written that private property is the end-all be all of existence, or even that its a legitimate concept when it allows humans to make the earth permanently uninhabitable for future generations?
oh yeah, its scrawled on the inside of your tiny monkey brain in your daddy's handwriting.
wow! buying stuff is almost as fun as creating something, but only requires the cognitive skills of a counting german shepherd. you're right! consumerism IS better than thinking.
Naked Lunch is a seminal work - 'linear successor' to Joyce blah blah blah lol (got a recording of Joyce reading from Finnegan's Wake; read it to impress a girl doing english lit, really got into it but Ulyses was too much to hack, too much commitment required -NkdLunch tho -got a narrative style like a weird nightmare; seedier than Bukowski's reportage if that's possible -grown out of Bukowski but you don't grow out of Burroughs -you just start reading midway thru, next thing, an hour's passed
@NoPrivacyANYMORE10, I remember having to read this with a thesaurus in college. His indictment of "control-addicts" through language as authority- enough to get a book banned. The father of the Beat Generation poets spoke from a knowledgeable position- his family having invented the Burroughs Adding Machine. I actually got to meet him and hear him read. A very gracious man. A very honest man. Old Bill Lee would just smirk at all of this. He embraced the new generation. Tore down the walls.
Burroughs amazing-gritty and real.Never lost his edge and wasn't afraid to speak his mind. His sarcastic, caustic quotes opened alot of peoples minds.Kerouac,Hunter S Thompson,Hoffman-to name a few-dust off books and read again....all still applies to this day.The day we stop questioning authority is the day we cease to grow....peace
@joeverdeal So, in your Christian love, you celebrate the fact that you think he's in hell? People like you make me grow in my atheism. Thanks for that.
@sottier. Of course we should celebrate that someone who has not embraced the love of Jesus (by drinking his blood and eating his flesh!) is burning in hell. Forgiveness is only for fellow Christians and only if their dues to the church are paid in full. The rest shall suffer for all eternity and Christians get to gloat about it. That is what religion is all about, being holier/better than thou.
@MrSelidor7 what sort of anointed *ss would gloat over another's eternal damnation and torment...you are a perfect encapsulation of things you would never imagine about yourself.
As hard it might be its so true about America... the last and greatest betrayal of the last and greatest of human dreams.

Lost u r.

It blew me away and has only become more prescient with each passing year.
I post it up in my blog every year and dedicate it to Burroughs' memory and everyone who has been shat, used up or abused by the great lie of liberty, prosperity and inclusivity for all; especially in these cash-strapped times.

JUST. LIKE. YOU.
theDarkAlleyPress 1 year ago 2
@arubberball Of course...The problem isn't the problem. It's the people mentioning the problem. Typically American, If we pretend shit's not fucked up, it's not fucked up.If we lambaste and label those who are effected enough to speak up about it, calling them "Bitter Liberals" and "Haters," they will just get fed up and stop, right?
johnnywalker1974 1 year ago 2
@johnnywalker1 it is what it is... for your sake, i'll just call him bitter. the majority of the sarcastic thanks he dishes out, stems from progressive/liberal elitist polices in the first place. unlike some, i'll defend your right to speak out, if need be to the death. washington is corrupt( democrats and republicans alike), but to say the country is rotten to the core is, not true. if you think that, then i feel sorry for you.
arubberball 1 year ago
@arubberball johnywalker is right. It isn't rotten to the core. It's rotten from the core out. There is a difference. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.
SustenanceNCovering 1 year ago 3
@arubberball But America IS rotten. It's been demolished by closed-minded, unwelcoming people.
We meddle in other people's shit. If you want to be communist, be communist, as long as you don't bother us.
We worship people who haven't a sense of what is important.
We raise our children to be rude, unthankful, and over-protected. When people actually punished their children appropriately, we raised an artistic, brilliant country.
dadope20202 11 months ago
@arubberball Now that we don't punish them, they've become lazy, unwilling people who have no idea what is going on in the world. They're ignorant, stuck up. When children have more power than their parents, there's a problem.
We hide current events, and when people find them, they are arrested or the facts are exaggerated in order to scare the people.
We wait until EVERYBODY knows and is affected by the problem before we try to fix it.
We are unhonorable, stuck up, ignorant assholes.
dadope20202 11 months ago
@arubberball WRONG! This country IS rotten to the core and the bullshit it used to feed the machine for all these years has gunked up the cogs...Thus the sound we now hear of it's screech to a halt.

Burroughs was a genius. This is actually pretty mild. My favorite Burroughs quote: "This is a war universe. War all the time. That is its nature. There may be other universes based on all sorts of other principles, but ours seems to be based on war and games."
nixiedixie 1 year ago 6

@verbaud If artists and poets are dying penniless perhaps they should find another line of work, find a patron who will subsidize them or produce art that people want to buy. Where is it written that one should be able to make a living at whatever one chooses to do?
kpadmirer 11 months ago
@kpadmirer
where is it written that private property is the end-all be all of existence, or even that its a legitimate concept when it allows humans to make the earth permanently uninhabitable for future generations?

@NoPrivacyANYMORE10, I remember having to read this with a thesaurus in college. His indictment of "control-addicts" through language as authority- enough to get a book banned. The father of the Beat Generation poets spoke from a knowledgeable position- his family having invented the Burroughs Adding Machine. I actually got to meet him and hear him read. A very gracious man. A very honest man. Old Bill Lee would just smirk at all of this. He embraced the new generation. Tore down the walls.

joeverdeal 1 year ago
@joeverdeal So, in your Christian love, you celebrate the fact that you think he's in hell? People like you make me grow in my atheism. Thanks for that.
sottier 1 year ago 4
