I took a blow dryer to mine on the rear exhaust vents for 15min and on high for 5 with the HD removed. PS3 cooled for about 20min. Put HD back in and it works like new. You might want to give it a try before spending 195 by sending it in. Don't apply heat to long or u might melt something like the internal fans. Easy fix.

Well I got the exact same problem on my PS3 slim a couple of weeks ago and I just turned it on today and it started working again no problem. I don't exactly know for how long this will last but for everyone else if you have the red blinking light I would suggest not keeping the PS3 connected to the power cord(or well anything at all) and let it cool down for a couple of days maby a week just to be sure. It is probably that the PS3 is overheating which I think might be the main problem for PS3's
Try buying some external fans from gamestop to keep your PS3 cool and always wipe off the dust from you system, especially from the vents where the fans are located at. Hope this helps anyone!

The fan should activate and start blowing air out of the back. Then, hit the eject buttons. The disc should pop out. This works on the older models for sure, not sure on the newer ones. Thumbs up so people can see this and get their game back!!!

To get your disk back you need to switch the ps3 off at the back, hold down the eject button and turn the ps3 back on. The fans will be louder than normal and the disk should come out

if you want it to get out, close the system from the back, when its OFF, press the eject button THEN switch it back on and i will get out ( it will force the cd to get out) thumbs up if its helpfull
to get your game out turn off the switch at the back of the ps3. then press on the eject button and turn the switch back on. the disc will come out and the ps3's fan will go crazy...it's normal though. hope this helps!
This is quite a common error it happens because the GPU and the CPU overheat, you need to send it in to fix it or you can repair it with a good guide at ylodrepairwizard. com

its not always a overheating problem.......most times its the power supply..... I just got done fixing my sony and cleaned off all the thermal paste.. put new paste on there and reassembled, and what do you think happened.....nothing same thing so im going to take the power supply in and check it.....

God, I just recently got the RLOD. My system will cut on and stay on. After about 5-10 minutes, bam, it cuts off.... Back when Black Ops came out, I would receive alerts that too much power was being drawn from the system.. Could that be the problem?

Theres no fix for this, send it to Sony they will fix it permanently if u try to fix it urself its gonna get it again Sony replaces the Motherboard, i had it like a year ago i fixed it like 5 times and i just bought a new one. i "Strongly" Recommend to send it to Sony or Buy a new one.
@Angelikal666 if you fix it... chances are it broke coz it got tooo hot in the place you kept it before. when you fixed it... get an external fan.. keep it FLAT not standing like the person in this video.. and keep it open and vacuum the dust out every week.. then it will not happen again

@RBSReviews: Hey there. I fix this problem two days for my best friend brother. This is YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) is what most people call it. I re-flowed the motherboard inside using a heat gun. And now his PS3 is working again. And there was no data lost. I don't know why Sony reformat the had drive because that has nothing to do with the repair process.

@longbeach225 be interesting to see how long the reflow fix lasts, all your dong is basically resoldering the CPU/GPU connections, and they'll have melted due to overheating, so it'll probably happen again
btw, Sony probs reformat the HDD because 9 times out of 10 they replace the motherboard. the HDD will need to reformat so that it can install drivers for the new m/b particularly if its a new model m/b. or you get a new refurbed console, so you won't get your orig. HDD back
@eddiehead: Actually I reflowed my best friend brother PS3 months ago and still going strong. What I do is I flux the board first, so I basically juice it up so it won't be dry during and after the reflow. However, too much flux is not good. I use lead free no clean flux.
@longbeach225 yeah it just depends on how different people reflow. I reflowed my m/b about 4 months ago and still no probs. I also replaced the fan and keep a cool fan on it when its on now which is most probs the reason its still here. like i said though if its not kept cooler and the problem was due to the processor overheating then it will happen again at some point. having said that my ps3 lasted 3 years 1st time round. glad reflow worked for you too :)
@BIGBOUTYAH: Reflow is the process of soldering /re-soldering IC (integrated Circuit) chips on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and in this case it's the PS3 motherboard. Some people say its a temporary fix but it can be permanent if its done right. I use a professional hot air rework station called the X-Tronic 4000 Series and its perfect for re-flowing. PS3 is still going strong without Sony help.
@stacy19100 It's the yellow light of death man, you were suppose to send it in to Sony so they could fix it and send it back to you. If you have the warranty then you could send it in for free if not it's $150.
the main reason for that is a CPU/GPU has disconnected with the circuit board this has happened to one and i fixed it my self buy simply blowing away the dust on the circuit board if that happens to you again then do what i did
@reldeter well you can always try reflowing it. look it up on youtube, there are plenty of vids on it. it does involve opening the ps3 and using a heat gun, so if you watch those and don't fancy it then fair play. its not hard though, and if the problem is CPU related then it'll fix guaranteed. however it will void the warranty (if you have one still) so if its still covered then sony it up

.You need to take everything out of your playstation 3 box,
Put your playstation in FACING DOWN so that the back vents ARE FACING UP AT YOU.
Take a hair dryer and turn it on HIGH,
Keep the hair dryer blowing into the back vents for 15 minutes, taking a 1-2 minute break every 5 min
.just go BACK AND FORTH across the back vents. and keep the blow dryer about 4 to 5 inches AWAY FROM PS3
.After that, put it in front of a fan or A/C vent,fridge,or fan for about 40 minutes, or until it is cooled.

God, I just recently got the RLOD. My system will cut on and stay on. After about 5-10 minutes, bam, it cuts off.... Back when Black Ops came out, I would receive alerts that too much power was being drawn from the system.. Could that be the problem?
I really fucking hate the fact that I may have to buy a new slim Ps3... I bought the 1-st-Gen 80gb and its the best one!! I'm ready to chew Sony out for this bullshit, and DEMAND that I am sent a new one. I've only had it 3 years.. :(((

Theres no fix for this, send it to Sony they will fix it permanently if u try to fix it urself its gonna get it again Sony replaces the Motherboard, i had it like a year ago i fixed it like 5 times and i just bought a new one. i "Strongly" Recommend to send it to Sony or Buy a new one.

@Angelikal666 if you fix it... chances are it broke coz it got tooo hot in the place you kept it before. when you fixed it... get an external fan.. keep it FLAT not standing like the person in this video.. and keep it open and vacuum the dust out every week.. then it will not happen again

URH. i was so annoyed when mine did this, i dont know what happened to it though, it was left on for about half an hour when noone was using it as we were doing other things and then it just cut out and the light started flashing, if you send it away do they just replace the fan, or is it like the whole HDD? because i dont want to lose everything thats on it. mine isnt a slim, its an older one, but the very first one i had did the same thing and i had to get it fixed and now its happened again!

@RBSReviews: Hey there. I fix this problem two days for my best friend brother. This is YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) is what most people call it. I re-flowed the motherboard inside using a heat gun. And now his PS3 is working again. And there was no data lost. I don't know why Sony reformat the had drive because that has nothing to do with the repair process.

@longbeach225 be interesting to see how long the reflow fix lasts, all your dong is basically resoldering the CPU/GPU connections, and they'll have melted due to overheating, so it'll probably happen again
btw, Sony probs reformat the HDD because 9 times out of 10 they replace the motherboard. the HDD will need to reformat so that it can install drivers for the new m/b particularly if its a new model m/b. or you get a new refurbed console, so you won't get your orig. HDD back

@eddiehead: Actually I reflowed my best friend brother PS3 months ago and still going strong. What I do is I flux the board first, so I basically juice it up so it won't be dry during and after the reflow. However, too much flux is not good. I use lead free no clean flux.

@longbeach225 yeah it just depends on how different people reflow. I reflowed my m/b about 4 months ago and still no probs. I also replaced the fan and keep a cool fan on it when its on now which is most probs the reason its still here. like i said though if its not kept cooler and the problem was due to the processor overheating then it will happen again at some point. having said that my ps3 lasted 3 years 1st time round. glad reflow worked for you too :)

@BIGBOUTYAH: Reflow is the process of soldering /re-soldering IC (integrated Circuit) chips on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and in this case it's the PS3 motherboard. Some people say its a temporary fix but it can be permanent if its done right. I use a professional hot air rework station called the X-Tronic 4000 Series and its perfect for re-flowing. PS3 is still going strong without Sony help.

the main reason for that is a CPU/GPU has disconnected with the circuit board this has happened to one and i fixed it my self buy simply blowing away the dust on the circuit board if that happens to you again then do what i did

@reldeter @ChristianUtd if you haven't already done this then it works on 95% of consoles:
turn the PS3 off from the switch on the back
hold the eject button (sometimes you need to hold the power button too)
while holding the button/s, flick the switch back on
this should force the ps3 to spit the disc out before the YLOD/RLOD takes hold
I've been told this doesn't work on the original 1st series of PS£ (orig fat 20/60gb models) although untested theory for me

@reldeter well you can always try reflowing it. look it up on youtube, there are plenty of vids on it. it does involve opening the ps3 and using a heat gun, so if you watch those and don't fancy it then fair play. its not hard though, and if the problem is CPU related then it'll fix guaranteed. however it will void the warranty (if you have one still) so if its still covered then sony it up

if your game is stuck in the ps3 all you have to do is turn your ps3 off in the back hold the eject button then turn it on in the back.

call sony bring up the law of 1988 tell them they are required to fix it bye law if they denie it file a report and tell them to direct you to a super visor they told me that if they got enough reportys they would fix them for free and recall the item so call in tell them what i said and stay on the phone as long as you can sony is fuckin us over they put something in the wireing so it would do the ylod it costes 178 dollers to fix so call in to them and fight this shit ......fuck sony!!!!!!!!!
