Simply put, there is no such thing a zero emission. It's a political talking point.

it uses the same type of batteries that are used in electric and hybrid cars. those batteries use lithium ions, they don't have lead and acid, and those are not alkaline batteries either. the solar panel that they use to recharge the batteries is huge (25 kW, look for "Solar Nectar Village" on flickr) so it can recharge batteries in just a few hours (not years!) . the current version of the mondo spider is not using any fuel for its operation. of course fuel was used for its construction.
