Id like to learn Debi Mazar's accent (actress) - i just love listenin to her 'tawk' hehehe.. She has a thick "Nu Yawk" accent, i wonder which part of NY her accent is from. Anyone?
Cockney + Aussie + Northen English Accent (I dont know if theres actually a term for that!!!)=New York!!!!! I desperatly need to master this accent for a audition but saying the wierd deer aperaed cheerful doesnt seem to help!!!
She's giving you all the accent of a WHITE NYKR say from Queens (listen to her and think of Archie and Edith-hmmm). I live in Maryland and people know off the bat where I'm from when I saw CAW-fee instead of CAH-FEE (coffee) or bawl instead of Bahl (ball), or wall, etc. We have a sort of "drawwwl", but it's cool. I love when people can tell! bur when they imitate me, they sound like either Rocky Balboa or an actor imitating a cab driver by exaggerating the accent. NYKR'S :thumbs up if you agree
Awww..listen to all of you so upset because you're not considered "standard american dialect". If I were you I'd be proud of it. These videos are for actors, and as such, we have to play certain characteristics that are entertaining, and thus, exaggerated. She's not making fun of you guys, so chill out.
That is NOTTTT a new york accent...plus, there are too many places in NY and cultures that influence each dialect. For example long island dialect is different than brooklyn...plus you sound different if you are italian than if you were black or even if you are jewish (although it is not a race or origin)
@Nycgal712 Boston people dont talk like that more like this;
We say come on get in the "car",Bostonians say com-mine get in the "kaah"
We say so you think you're "smarter" than me?Bostonians say so you think you're "smottah" than me? The accents are a little different the further North you go.
@Nycgal712 i'm from new york born and raised in brooklyn, and I can't shake off this my new yorker accent mate. if you think we're lying head down to coney island. lol
@hazeleyedgrl1228 I say cahh,, and swettah, I also say paak, and daww. (door) so what is it with you people trying to morph the old yankee accent. I ain't changing my accent for nobody man. go ahead and try to sound sophisticated with your crappy ''r'' when you're saying it all wrong. the brits never used the ''r'' and they invented english pally. so more in depth. and if you're from new york man you're a disgrace.
@urodophobic lol go ahead and try to be sophisticated, no ones stopping ya.but you're NEW YAWKA ACCENT eventually pops out like janet jacksons titties.I ain't shaking my brooklyn accent cause I can't shake it off. but go ahead and feel free to sound like a normal lame. :)
@sugizo88 okay, this is odd - I'm watching these videos because I play a character from Brooklyn in a play, and every time I try to use the accent, it totally turns Aussie!
I don't know about you guys but I'm from Long Island and I exaggerate my r's except with -er this lady is doing Bostonian and I should know since I have family up there. And if she's going for the city dialect then she's doing the old jewish yenta because my family does not sound like that and they were born and raised there.
It's hilarious to hear New Yorkers argue about this... especially since the different areas of New York often sound vastly different. But I do understand your angst... I hate to hear non-Southern people in Hollywood TRY to write or speak our dialect... Kathy Bates and Andie McDowell can do it...not many others...
hmm well...some stuff like sweata and letta is true others are over exaggeration...thats mostly only staten islanders or brooklyn accents, im from the bronx...
This some bullshit. Wat is this? Fucking...get the sweata from the cheehful runna? There ain't no fecking "cheehful" runna's gonna give you they sweata in New York. Less you gonna take it.
You got it. Adding "R"'s where they don't belong, and dropping them where they do! One unifying element to the New Yawk accents. It's not just NY. I read a London Times op ed written by a man who said his mother was from the English midlands and she would also add "R"'s - as in "warshing" instead of "washing". I'm the most interested in where accents and dialects come from. The origins are clues to the mystery of a people's history. I'm also interested in why we consider some accents 'better'
