OMFG This violence disgusts me and I am going to write my senator that they should ban this. Because Fox news in 1976 told me so lol j/k idk about that last part. But WOW hahahahahahaa
@KrazieKennie What do you study where you have to write a dissertation about video games? Where I live, people's reaction to anyone who has got anything to do with video games are like "You must be a slacker" or "VIDEO GAMES?! XDXDXD GROW UP KID!"
I still don't know what to study, but what I am doing most in my free time is playing recent or researching for very old console/computer/arcade games.
@1xWertzui I was doing BA Journalism Studies in England. It has to be Culture Related with a Journalism twist. It cased quite a lot of debate in my group of friends.
It's because you were killing people, which at that time was taboo. We laugh at it today, but back then, it was a big no-no, though blowing up alien vessels was okay.
How could a 8-bit game like this cause controversy? I could understand MK and the PS2, XBox 'till now could cause controversy but this? I say overeaction. I know that's probably not the point but were they fucking serious?
@ThePhantom2K9 This isn't even 8 bit, that's WAY too advanced.
But seriously, the game pissed people off. Look it up on Wikipedia. I know their not the end all be all of info, but it's all true. Parent groups blasted the game, it was featured on CBS's 60 Minutes and there's even stories of people dragging the games out into the middle of the street and setting it on fire.
@ThePhantom2K9 Fuck yeah, they were serious! I used to love this game! To be fair, it didn't get the sort of attention Grand Theft Auto did, but it was the subject of a few news stories.
All I remember was how much fun I had running down the "gremlins" and the vague twinge of guilt I'd feel doing it. Not so guilty that I stopped pumping quarters in the damn thing, of course ... ;)
@PressStartComic AWESOME place I went there last summer. It it probably one of the biggest arcades! Only problem is that they didn't have Street Fighter when I went and I was pretty mad lol
I feel like the game actually gets easier once you kill the first few people - the tombstones sort of restrict your driving, but they also restrict the pedestrians from running around. When I saw the artwork on the machine I was blown away, and when I realized you were supposed to kill people with your car I was far more intrigued. Then when I heard that first scream I was hooked.
I was up there September 12, 2009 and the player 1 wheel still does not work. It worked pretty good through one game, and I tried to play it again and could only drive in a straight line. Still hit two "gremlins", though!
You have this game on your computer? And what might that be? I've never seen any decent simulation of this game in my life.. I've only seen two attempts and they were both lousy.
Timekillers will definitely have a very special video in the near future. I am going to be purchasing a Timekillers PCB for my home arcade that we will also use for the video.
Very cool machine. It came out in 1976, a year after the 1975 cult film classic "Death Race 2000". I wonder if the movie had any influence on the game. Nevertheless, one of the rarest and most bad-ass early machines of all time. I really gotta make the trip to Funspot.

And then we had Quarantine, Road Warrior and Carmageddon.

This was the first arcade video game I ever played, at the time when there wasn't much competition other than pinball machines.

Awesome Game, I first played it when I was 12.
Oh by the way it came out circa 1976.

This game rocked in the late 70's.The
game had heavy-duty Munster style
steering wheels and awesome audio.
Can't be a lot of these left in one piece,
they must be worth a fortune.

@4ffr3
You can't since it doesn't use roms and therefore can't be emulated.
DJCandyManMike 1 year ago
@DJCandyManMike What about Mame?
philosophermike 1 year ago
@philosophermike
Mame depends on roms, and Death Race didn't use roms. Therefore, truly emulating it is impossible. You'd have to program your own reproduction.
DJCandyManMike 1 year ago
Cool! If only there was a game based of the Death Race 2000 and not based of the crappy remake.

what's ironic is that this looks like it is more fun to play than that new giant air raid game you just did a video on...

That scream sound was pretty good for 1970s. The only two controversial games before this were Shark Jaws (1975) and Gotcha (1973).

Maybe you could do a video series of controversial arcade games, maybe Timekillers next one around.
