Rock and Roll was ill defined because none had seen this yet. This is rock and roll, punk, out, free, avant garde, etc. Nothing says f*ck you in such a beautiful way as this piece.
Hi liedman. I have a PhD in preference formation, so I know something about why people like what they do. Some don't like swing jazz from the 50th, and some prefer Lady Gaga's da,da - da,da,da - da,da, and some like Peter. I said I expressed my opinion, then it's not ignorant. I'm not sure if I will educate myself in this music style. To do that, you should have some ideas about the benefit, and I don't.
Does knowledge about music influence on what you like and dislike? This is not music to me, and it's definitely not jazz. That opinion is not ignorant, it's an expression of what I think. If the "Gorilla" likes it, fine. Have fun. I think that gorillas might have done it better (that was ignorant).
@mattissurf just because you dont like it, doesn't mean it is not music. A statement like that is the height of ignorance, even if it is an expression of what you think. Expression... now there's an interesting concept, perhaps you should watch this enlightening video to educate yourself in the matter.
Might I suggest that those who don't know anything about a subject keep their ignorant thoughts to themselves and those acquaintances who can tolerate them.
Might I suggest that those who don't know anything about a subject keep their ignorant thoughts to themselves and those acquaintances who can tolerate them.
Drums and bass are chaotic but not obscure and insanely dissonant they're all and all nice, but that Sax and trumpet are far from melodic and have a screechy timbre and become more sound effects than melody.
you have to know how to play jazz before you even begin to care about playing this stuff. peter brotzmann is still arguably the best thing in so called avant-garde jazz or creative high art circles that money can buy! So all you dissin folk go back to your nowheresville while the rest of the cultural elite laugh at you and soak up the ridiculous and questionably artistic, yet undying energy of Peter Brotzmann.
I Love this Video and also I checked out your Channel. Very interesting! If you need any help getting this Video and your Channel exposed to were it is top in all the search I found this site called tubeviews.(net) that has took my breath away. I'm working on my 4th Channel now, this one I just made. My Videos are getting so many hits now. Check it out and keep in touch.
wow toshinori sounds like if merzbow picked up a broken trumpet. Parker and Drake are just back there making a nice groove and Brotzmann, is well, Brotzmann. Awesome.
They had to switch the order of acts that night, so they had to go on earlier. Then there were problems at sound check w/Kondo's trumpet, and yet someone opened the house, so people were coming in.
They're finally ready to hit, but Kondo looks at Peter indicating he wants a break - and walks off. The MC starts to announce the group, Peter takes the mike from the MC and apologizes to the crowd and says we need to take a few minutes before we start. "Im thinking to myself, "OMG, when they come back, this is going to be something". . and sure enough, it was.
Wow - some killer footage here. What's the source? Looks like a TV broadcast of some sort.
I too saw this band at the Empty Bottle Festival in '99. A memorable gig for sure, that I'm surprised was never released on CD. I presented the trio + Kidd Jordan in New Orleans some years back and have seen just the trio version. Both great concerts, but there's something about Kondo. He really takes things up into the stratosphere.
One of the BEST live videos ever, if not THE best! Brotzmann is beyond compare. But what makes this movie is the trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. He is a madman and the best trumpeter i have ever heard. i love the communication between the two horns. But of course, what would this be without the drums and bass?
I saw Die Like a Dog Quartet at the empty Bottle Festival quite a few years ago. This band is amazing live. This video gives you a hint of the intensity this quartet generates.

makes me want to tear my eyes, ears and brain out!
it sounds like the music you hear in your head when you get buried alive in a coffin,
which has obviously happened to the trumpet player.
