I was wondering on what training methods you use before actually getting to have a hold on a real sword, like how do you prepare the body? don't got any sword to practice :x
ummm quick question the way u pulled your katana out wouldn't it dull the sword cause wen i was watching another vid it said to pull it out on the dull side u seem like ur pretty skilled so i was just confused
@SuperAwais12 Good question. Not too sure exactly what you mean but we practice drawing in ALL manner because, if you ever are in a real combat situation, you may be forced to draw it in an infinite number of ways (depending on what your opponent does and what objects in the environment might restrict your movement.)
quick question when you draw a katana should it be any different if your left handed? cause im a lefty and its easier for me to do it that way but, if i should do it right handed so be it.
@TheFlair8 The origin of ninjas came mainly from the samurai. All samurai were right handed (Not a single one was left). It would be better if you practiced it the way it should be done (with the right). However, for defense purposes, sticking to what's already more natural for your body may help you learn a bit faster.

hi guys i got a question... so the problem is i really wanna learn how to use a katana but near my town there is not a single master/teacher of fighting with it... so thats why i ask you guys by performing on my own WITH A PRACTISE KATANA out of wood so i cant hurt myself-i still am careful with it. and when im used to it and dont hurt myself step on to a real katana. what do you think? is that okay or should i wait until a teacher appears some day? <.< really wanna learn using this sword...^^
@Cevirus93 Your motivation is awesome! The good thing about starting to learn is that you can begin to understand the basic concepts and terminology until you find an instructor or go to some seminars. The only problem about training without an instructor is that you could form some bad habits - so just be careful about that and use a mirror or video a lot to compare your movement with what you see online and in videos. Go very slowly and keep trying to find seminars, at least.
Most instructors focus solely on hand and feet , because they are your natural given "creators and destroyers". It is important to start out "knowing thyself " ; this is where the weird meditation comes in. It can be done anywhere in any position ...even lying in bed just thinking about stuff. So... just remove all thoughts. There's nothing but you , and an empty space. Now before you become a warrior , know that , violence begets violence...
@Cevirus93 ...and he who liveth by the sword, shall die by the sword. We will all die inevitably. With this said , know what you are stepping in to and be prepared. ...katana is not sai or nunchaku. You will much rather bust your face with nunchaku that even barely nick your throat with katana. Practice SLOWLY , as if it were tai chi, focusing on form and doing it properly. No sense in doing anything if not doing it right. Next...weigh the necessity of this knowledge...
@Cevirus93 ...let's say you ARE in a position to use this sword. ...gun... knife...whatever. ...the need to kill. Are you prepared for the legal ramifications? Why its best to stick to hands. As sure as you go showing off "skills" , someone's going to take that as a challenge.
Ninja's didn't traditionally use the Katana. The Katana was traditionally used by the Samurai. They were expensive pieces of metal and since ninja's were farming peasants not normally rich enough to even get the materials to make their own, they used a Nonjatta, which was similar to the Katana only in its shape and looks, but not quite as sharp, but still touching the blade should probably be a big no go regardless of it being a practice sword or not.
@bugvader one term for what you are asking about is Zenkutsu-Dachi (long stance) or Zenkutsu-no-Kamae (long posture), nice phonetic attempt at it though.
@jamnin94 yes, that's right about buying black belts. As instructors, we just pick ours up from a local karate shop who knows us. If you are an instructor, 1313lakers, call your closest karate supply store or major online suppliers and explain that you need to find belts for your students. Otherwise, your instructor will give one to you when you earn it.
Another reason for not having the hand up against the tsuba is that if the tsuba happens to take a strike by another blade, the energy from that strike will not transfer into your hand!
I'am getting ready to start a school. in sellersburg Indiana. Even though I know these techiques, you have helped me in starting a basic curiculum. Learning, and teaching are like fire and water lol. I would appreciate any help you could give me.
If i want to learn ninja sword fighting techniques but there is no schools near or far from my town how can i start learning at my own home peace from a complete beginner i live in uk btw any sugestions DVD anything cause i cant get this lessons i think or can i order them? pls help im really fired up on learning this!! no matter how long it takes .
@bladeking2013 i dont see a difference, at least in appearance. im a newbie and wanna learn. do you think i reverse blade katana would be good for practicing, or should i just get one of the bokken?????
@eranamter your wrong the tanto was used as a seppaku, the wakizashi was incase in battle they lost the function with their katana, and as a plus ninjas don't use katanas they use ninjatos, they use katanas when they stole them from samurai.
@eranamter The Wakizashi was your for lack of a beter word, stand by, say your inside a building, japanese door ways hang kindv'e low, and if you tried a shomenuchi near one you'd hit it plus the katana isn't the longest of blades, but in side of a small room filled with people it feels like it's 30 ft long, so the Wakizashi would beter suit you in that situation. In Regards to seppuku as i understand it was a tanto that was the sword of choice, it's small usually about 10-14 inches in total.
@petersthorn Most sword schools do not require you to be a black belt in anything before hand. I suppose Aikido would state such a rule, but really it sounds like you could have come across a school that is either not legitimate or just really stuck up, so you probably wouldnt have enjoyed it anyways. Keep looking, the training is well worth it. I wish you luck in your search :)
be mind full of the iaido tehnique...cuz i've seen to many people cut their hand wich is on the saya, cuz when they draw, their blade touches the saya, and after sometime saya gets thiner and thiner, and eventually brakes thru on your hands, so be carefull guys.. :)

I tried to get sword lessons at a martial arts school but they denied me saying I needed to be a black belt.
Let's be serious, is some one has a sword and just a little skill they will probably kill you with their sword. Sort of hard to karate chop a sword.
You take fencing and don't need to learn any thing before hand...
