Purple were also at one point the loudest band on the planet, Ian Gillan screamed louder than anyone at the time. I think it all worked out. When Ritchie left, he formed Rainbow. When Ian left, he formed GIllan. These were brilliant projects that gave the world some of the gave the world some of the greatest music ever written. Artists do what they need to do, and they don't always get along. . .

I'm not sure who was more the intellectual dwarf, funny turn of phrase from Gillian, but that general sense of criticism can be aptly applied to DP in general, and is what kept them, in my mind, from being the musical peer of Tull, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Yes, and many others, which is not to say these other bands were necessarily intellectual giants.
I love all the bands you mention, but to say that Purple weren't their peer is just daft. You do know that Purple have sold roughly four time as many records as Sabbath, and three times as many as Tull, right?

Ha ha. Even with all their serious differences, they still have a sense of humour about each other. I don't think the MK2 (C) lineup would have survived much longer anyway even if Ritchie hadn't have exited stage left in '93. I love all of Purple's colourful career but for me the MK2 lineup had that little bit extra, probably caused by the tension between these two giants.

I think it all worked out. When Ritchie left, he formed Rainbow. When Ian left, he formed GIllan. These were brilliant projects that gave the world some of the gave the world some of the greatest music ever written. Artists do what they need to do, and they don't always get along. . .

I'm not sure who was more the intellectual dwarf, funny turn of phrase from Gillian, but that general sense of criticism can be aptly applied to DP in general, and is what kept them, in my mind, from being the musical peer of Tull, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Yes, and many others, which is not to say these other bands were necessarily intellectual giants.
