  • does this work for 2.2.2

  • DON'T USE THIS ON ANYTHING BUT DROID 1! IT IS NOT MEANT FOR ANYTHING ELSE

  • This method BROKE my Motorola Milestone recovery... i gent get to recovery mode anymore. I just found out that DroidRootHelper is ONLY compatible with Motorola Droid, NOT the Motorola Milestone. Now I have to find a way to fix my recovery. I can still use my phone, though.

  • Excellent videos now we need to take you to film school or hire a camera man. The bobbing and weaving is making me sick.

  • i have a retail backup from my previous droid that was lost a while back. Will it work if i put it in my nandroid and run it?

  • The new DroidRootHelper, v9.0, is free. Using this you will press...

..."Mount System read/write" instead of "Mount mtdblock4"

..."Flash 99.3b" instead of "Flash Recovery 99.1b"

..."Mount System read only(unmounts/system)" instead of "Unmount System mtdblock4"

ALSO, as I stated above, it uses Flash 99.3b. SO SKIP STEPS 6 THROUGH 8. I just finished installing Smoked Glass V4.1, so I can confirm.

PLEASE CONFIRM IF YOU AGREE DroidReview.

  • @Chungmunky where can we find the flash 99.3b download?

  • Comment removed

  • @wljesse18 I can no longer find "DroidRootHelper" on the market but from what I remember when you "Flash 99.3b", DroidRootHelper would install it.

There are much better Roms at this point though. I'm using Froyo 2.2 which can installed after the 2.1 update. Froyo 2.2 allows root permissions, runs very smoothly without many bugs, and has recently incorporated flash.

  • I am a complete NOOB. I really like your videos, even if you do move kind of quickly, lol.

I have questions regarind this video.

    1) It appears as though 2/3 of the work you outline is to get SPreocvery on the phone. In my case I followed your latest vids and got 0.99.3b installed and working fine. I also got my phone rooted with Pet's ESE81 rooted rom. So far so good! CAN WE SKIP THE DROID ROOT HELPER part of these vids?

    2) what is busy box and why do i need it to install kernel+roms?

  • @linearone : Yes, I noticed they were different commands i'm pressing so i followed his order. I guess it would work though? I'm done now? No need for steps 6-8?

  • very interested in unrooting to 2.1 update-1 a full unroot

  • I typed in the commands, and even unplugged the usb to get it to work, but no luck.

i typed it so many times i pretty much remembered the commands

    su

    flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img

    reboot recovery

I noticed there is also the 3b file?

  • If you use ConnectBot instead of the terminal program that comes with the Android SDK, you can use the volume buttons on the Droid to adjust the font size (and resize the terminal emulator.)

  • Pls. help

    Thank u sir

  • Excuse me sir droidreviewer. When should i do the back up to my droid? because my location is philippines i should do root my droid first right? then after that whats the next thing i should do? should i do back up/tutorial immediately after rooting? or i should only do back up/tutorial when i did something wrong to my phone/brick it whatever

  • latest recovery version seems to be 0.99.93b. is this step still necessary?

  • mine still says 0.00.1b

i mustve did something wrong cuz i got scared when it showed the screen with BootLoader and the Wizard popped up on my computer monitor.

Wizard said it could not (do whatever it had to do) and i took out my usb.

What do i do at the BootLoader screen on the Droid?

  • Thanks for the POST. It really helped me out and very good. Thanks again...

  • i thought wen u rename the back up or any roms to the nandroid file u can not have spaces

  • i jus got to the part where it says patched by sirpsychos (0.99.1b)

urs says 2b and mine says 1b, does this matter?

  • im still at 1b also... he didn't talk at all about goign from 1b to 2b.

  • I copied the image onto my SD card in the root but when i run the command it says "error reading /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img" any ideas?

  • Can some one please tell me how you can add only one pictuer to only one screen on the droid

  • just got droid tuesday im new to this came from the storm I followed the root your droid tutorial and im nandoid back up im on part 2 when it comes down to updating the recovery to 1b to 2b....it keeps saying no such file or directory any help is appreciated I checked other forums just cannot get it thx in advanced

  • I had the same problem until I realized I had the USB cable still plugged in and mounted to sd card. Once I disconnected the usb the droid had access to the sdcard and it worked .

  • How do you extract them to the root of the sd card. Keep the folder named TOOLS. (step 3)

  • So I followed everything step for step, still showing version 1b as well...

So far the only thing in the vid that I don't understand is where and how you got "Recovery-0.99.2b.img file" onto your desktop to copy into sdcard's root??

Thanks for everything else so far btw!!

  • download link is the second link in the instructions in the sidebar. Click on "more info" and you shouldn't have any trouble following the written instructions.

  • mine is still 1b too! can we please get some help with this!? i dont see that anyone who has asked this question has been answered!! why are we still at 1b? and how do we get it to 2b???

  • can i do this with a mytouch

  • after i pressed enter, all that happened was that my phone rebooted but all there is the logo from Motorola, can anyone help?!

  • i hit enter after i put reboot recovery and nuthing happened ... help ?

  • mine is still saying -.99 1 b not 2 b :(

  • if you go up to the video description he has some links. download the second link and then transfer it over to the root of your sd card! worked for me! :)

  • thanks!

  • LISTEN UP GUYS! i am using windows. after downloading the tools: -plug phone to computer/mount. -open your phone's drive. -on the list of folders, under removable disk (mine shows H;). -click on download/s folder. -open/double click droidroothelper. should see a folder named tools. -drag and drop/copy-paste the tools folder to the removable disk (again mine is H;). -under removable disk you see new folder named tools. -close phone's driver. -repeat step 4. it finally worked on mine. good luck.
  • I type in everything the way it shows in the video, but no reboot happens after I enter after the third line. whats up with that. HELP...

  • DroidReview, you're awesome! Quality camera work, you don't stutter or anything of the sort. Most importantly you convey reliable information. Thanks.

  • For all of that have problems with "such file doesnt exsist: etc just rename recovery-0.99.2bimg to whatever u want. I did to 0.99.2b.img and then try to flash it again

    flash_image recovery /sdcard/0.99.2b.img

    and it must work

one more thing is as Halon750 suggested is to back it up again after u flashed woth 0.99.2b just be on the safe side.

  • When i type in the recovery code it says error no such file etc.. can someone help?

  • i'm getting the same.

  • ok, make sure to eject AND unplug from computer, then do it again.

  • I'm getting same thing. It must be something with not typing it correctly so I am trying it again

  • All I did is instead typing all recover-0.99.2b.img I renamed it to 0.99.2b.img and it worker.

    2nd line

    flash_image recovery /sdcard/0.99.2b.img

    and it worked

  • i tried to restore it to retail andd it says Nandroid exited with status 21

  • Make sure you space.

  • The only thing I'd add is a second backup after you flashed .99.2b ....

  • alright just a question wat would happen if u changed roms but didnt update to recovery 0.99.2b

  • I copied the 0.99.2b file into my card. My card is not named "Removable Storage" like yours and my file says "0.99.2b" not "0.99.2b.img" like yours. After entering su and typing in the long recovery code word for word i get "error opening /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img: No such file or directory"

~Thanks in Return for any ones help.

  • how freaking awesome thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mine still says 0.99.1b

    what did i do wrong??

  • is this still up to date?

  • Do i have to go to droidroothelper and do all that tools download and stuff everytime u backup?

  • @ TheLiljordan23

No, all you need to do is reboot in recovery, and go from there

  • ok so error 25 means too many folders. the zip link in the see notes makes a folder within the folder when you unzip.

So basically open the folder and make sure there isn't a folder within the folder. solved my error 25

  • when I plugged my droid in and mounted it in the video you said the nandroid folder was already there.... mine isnt where can I find it?

  • @ohdangggg me too. i have no nandroid folder but i did everything correctly

  • Would all this work on a motorola milestone?

  • I dont see why not... give it a try =D

  • @MusicIan423 motorola milestone is a droid.....

  • where can find 99.2b to upgrade? help please

  • Its in my links, click more info on the video description.

  • i figured out how to get it to 99.2b for those having the problem

when you type in the commands

on your screen it should look exactly like he typed it

dont forget to put the space after recovery before the /sdcard

that was my problem hope this helps

  • Thanks =D

  • unplug your droid from the computer. should work.

  • flash image?

  • Didn't you forget to mention the step where you copy flash_image over to root of SD (at the same time you copy over recover-0.99.2b)?

  • typed in something wrong...haha mistake on my part. thanks so much!!!

  • i am also having problems trying to update to 0.99.2b it goes but the reboot screen shows 99.1b, help please!!

  • These videos have been life savers. And so have the comments below. I watched the entire video part 1 and part 2 and didn't catch the bit about where to get recovery-0.99.2b.img. Thanks for the help folks!

  • I am having a problem with updating to .99.2b It goes thu, but the reboot screen shows 99.1b I even tried it with new ubdate 99.3b but it still shows reboot sceen version 99.1b Why ?? Help !!

  • I can't get my phone to unroot or update to 0.99.2b..it says 0.99.2b in recovery mode, but the phone is stull running the 99.1...my phone is so jacked..:(

  • I can't unzip recovery-0.99.3b.img

file... any idea why? when I left click I don't get the option to unzip

  • you dont unzip it, its just a .img file which you just drag to the root of your SDCard.

  • oh and yes, i did put the extra space after recovery in the 2nd command. i dont understand whats wrong...

  • make sure you unplug your Droid from your computer before you do this step. Same this happened to me.

  • i have a problem updating to .99.2b.

  • Link is updated, should be working, Sorry for the downtime. You should be able to now download the recovery image file.

  • Quick heads up, the Recovery image file download link is down at the moment. The developers had a little tiffy and took down the site they had... DRAMA! Should be back up in a few days sorry guys!!! Try to google that file and you should find it ....

  • I can't post links in the chat. But pm me if you need the 99.2b

  • appreciate the help, i manged to find one. Thank you though.

  • Comment removed

  • how do i pm u to i can get the file aswell

  • thanks..worked without any problems, great vid

  • so if i do the backup and i want to do another backup in the future, will i need to go through the whole process or do i just start off at step five, from the description?

  • Your right! You just start from step 5... You can make as many backups, as often as you want. The more backups the more security.. I honestly go back to stock, wipe cache partition, wipe data/factory reset. THEN load stock rooted ROM, then I go back into recovery, create a backup, then load custom rom. I do this EVERY time I wanna install a new ROM. Keeps it clean, and less buggy.

  • LOL... Thank you to all that have helped answer questions for me. Like I say in the videos, if you see a question and know the answer feel free to post it up! =D

  • DUDE JUST FIGURED IT OUT, THERE'S A DAMN SPACE BETWEEN RECOVERY AND SLASH:

    RIGHT WAY: recovery /sdcard

    WRONG WAY: recovery/sdcard

WE NOT LISTENING, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK DUDE.

  • wow..thanks a lot.

    we're all so dumb. haha

  • same issue here... tried it all 4 times...ugh... i re did everything. If i figure it out ill let u now Glider.DroidReview had been mailing me. Should get it soon.

  • same problem as LeBubblez. I still have .1b version not .2b. Followed every step precisely. I did it twice and it did not upgrade. helppp

  • @DroidReview oh my bad but thanks good to know....you wouldn't by chance know how to get the live wallpapers on the smoked glass rom is there?

  • Ok i did everything right and when i choose the retail backup i made it gave me an error so i cant restore to that back up. please reply back

  • @iMikeReviews Make sure there are no spaces in your folder that you put in the nandroid folder.

  • Just to let you know after i renamed my backup i get an error. It has to stay the default name in order to do a back up with out any errors

  • @Kablazn No it does not. You just CANT have spaces in your folder name. NO SPACES! =D

  • ok, when i put in the 0.99.2b.img and then do the whole emulator thing folowing ur steps EXACTLY it still shows it as 0.99.1b

  • @LeBubblez Not sure why, make sure you have # marks when using the Terminal Emulator...

  • im not sure what you mean by having the # marks in the emulator?

  • for some reason it wont let me download the tools.

  • When I type in

    "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img"

I get can error stating "no such file or directory.

What exactly am i doing wrong, its in the root of the SD card.

  • you need to make sure you typed in the line exactly, also that your SD card is not mounted. It's easiest to make sure your phone is not even connected to your computer at all. You cannot access the SD card on the Droid while it is mounted to your computer.

  • Make sure the USB is not connected when u typing it in

  • How did u get the 99.2

  • loaded the c-rom and it keeps rebooting about 3 time before it takes..then tried to load the back up. and it gives me an error 21...any answers would be good..

  • @dkills082 Your getting that error because your SPRecovery tool is not at 99.2b. You need to update it as it says in the video, and in the steps

  • @DroidReview i am at 99.2...

  • i noticed that when i typed down the line after "su" it wouldnt work, but after i unmounted the sd card it worked.. so yeah u should Note that doing this step to remember to UNMOUNT the SD card. =)

  • MrSnipy13, there is a link to the recovery file in his show notes. Click the "info" tab then "more info"to find the links. **Note-there is a new version 0.99.3b out now.

    Great work DR.

  • @LadieAngler Yes there is, but from what I have seen it isn't required yet. Once it is I will update the link and add an annotation to the video.

  • Thanks for the info. and sry for all the comments. internet probs guess it posted a little 2 many times

  • Comment removed

  • @jmoneyclub Click the link that says Download this file. PLEASE follow the steps! Thanks =D

  • Please make sure you read the show notes, the steps have changed due to the error on my part. Thank you again to all that pointed this out.. =D

  • Guys I'm so sorry, First off thank you all that pointed out the error I made when making this video. I forgot to mention that after saving the "get the tools" button to your sd card, you have to extract the folder to the root of your SD card, it will be called TOOLS. Don't rename it... This should solve all the errors you guys are having.. Again SO SORRY!!!

  • Hey I'm not sure if I hav the same problem as the previous person, but it won't let me restore to the backup. Error code 21 or something keeps popping up. What could be wrong help!! If the backup doesn't work is there a normal ROM I can install that's the same as previous?

  • thank you so much dude. this has to be the first video ive seen for how to create one of these which i can actually understand. very noob friendly :) 5/5

  • will u show how to overclock?

  • awesome tutorial~! will help me tommorow

  • You got any roms that run live backgrounds?

  • @MaxBobcat Unfortunately I have yet to see a ROM running live wallpapers, BUT you can install the actual 2.1 software to the droid and have live wallpaper BUT its full of bugs as its meant for the Nexus one. I wouldn't recommend installing 2.1

  • Will all this stuff still work after Android 2.1 rolls out OTA this week?

  • @MaxBobcat Please remember that this update might not be out THIS week, Just a little inside info, that 2.1 update has been in the works since november lol... VZW keeps saying this week, over and over... Lets hope for the best. YES your phone will accept the OTA update just fine, you will just have to re root your phone... No biggy..

  • u are super helpful. the video with how to unroot would be great too. thnx again

  • @sonicboomin

Totally, I will deff be doing this soon. My next video though will be the installation of the custom ROM and explanation of overclocking! =D
