i love the non released stuff on Pettys albums...such evergreens, he definetly learnt alot of Harrison about keeping it Simple, Real and Beautiful...this is one of him a real tip of the hat too Harrison this tune...
When you come to that point... "We rarely play this one" and it is a song as good as this... as good as it gets.... Then you have a great amount of songs to choose from... dont you?
@Fralleful Yeah, seriously! It's one of my favorites, but like you said, they have so many awesome songs, all of which can't be played at a 3 hr concert!
I am 35. I love the Beatles because I met rock'n roll with them, but I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers the most because they have been with me, living, since I was 13, from Full Moon Fever to Mojo. They are a living part of my life, eventhough I missed their previous albums, but it does not matter, I really love them too, my favourite: Damn the Torpedoes...
This is my favorite one he ever wrote. To me its about waiting for what makes you happy to come true. You work and work and work for it. And you wait. You ponder why its your passion, you wish you could do something else. But you can't. And you crawl back to it.
Watched 6 hours straight of Tom Petty on BBC4 on Saturday to celebrate the band's 30 years together. I can't believe how much I still love the man & his music. I haven't stopped listening to this song since then. I hope he comes to the UK this year. Benmont's piano just breaks my heart, its so beautiful.
3:16 'we were caught up in a barroom fight/til an indian shot out the lights/i'm so tired of being tired/and sure as night will follow day/most things i worry about never happen anyway'
What's amazing is that there are a handful of band that can last decades. I am 27 and have listened to Tom Petty since I was five and it's still great music.
i agree with all these comments. my mom actually got to chill with him for a day when she was growin up in san diego. his drummer got sick so they called my mom's friend to fill in. AWESOME!! and she still has the pic he signed for her that says "michele.... stay a hot california babe.. love Tom" ha ha

@CvillePippin Yeah that's Howie Epstein. He mostly looked like shit later in his career due to heroin abuse. He died in 2003 due to drug related complications.
@roachcoachman Yea, and have you heard the studio version? It's one of the tightest studio recordings I've ever heard. Just perfect, really. Plus the lyrics kill.

This is such a great song and a great performance. If anyone doesn't own the Runnin' Down A Dream dvd, do yourself a favor and get it. It's a great history of the band.
This Soundstage show is to me, one of the best live concerts that they ever did, really shows the full range of their talent and artistic depth, particularly in these extended jams that they did that you won't hear on the radio or on the studio albums. Very underrated band. I just wish that they would release it on CD so that I could listen to it in my car or on my I pod.

I connect with Tom Petty's lyrics/music more than any other artist. Like my Idol gene often says 'why cant I have steak and cheesecake'? Liking one has nothing to do with liking the other. Some people open their minds to more than one style, and like one of my other Idols Ice-T says ' ...I feel sorry for anyone who only listens to one form of music...'
