In the comments of performances of this song, it's almost unanimously agreed that the recorded version is somewhat of a let down in comparison. She recorded Clam, crab, cockle, cowrie twice... maybe we will be so lucky for her to do another version of Esme too.
Haha, if you look back in the comments you'll see one I left a year ago, which was mostly a positive remark. It's funny how much good and healing Joanna's music brought to my life... It's just a shame that she rebuilt my heart for someone to break it all over again. But I guess that's the way it goes.
You know, I actually prefer this pre-album version more than the official one.
It's has a bit more range to the vocals, especially in the choruses (like the one at 1:59). The album version sort of just runs together into a big blob, and it's a bit harder to appreciate.
@awesome87 i absolutely agree, the album version is very disappointing. not that it isn't a beautiful version in it's own right, i just think it lacks the exhilaration that this song provides. i keep coming back to this live bootleg.
@antgto i think its just about growing up. some people realize one day that the junk that they've had foisted off on them as 'music' is, for the most part, just manufactured crap. there are plenty of amazing, forward- think artists out there, if one only wants to look. and the world we live in today makes it easier than ever to find new stuff. Ms Newson, Imogen Heap, Theresa Anderson... i'm sure this is just scratching the surface. just look.
This was the first song I heard from her new album project, I tought ''c'mon if is the first released song most be the most powerfull, and I loved it, but the more I hear her new songs, good intentions, baby birch, 81, OMG the're all that good
You know, this song surprised me. It's not an instant stand-out on the album like 'In California,' 'Baby Birch,' 'Does Not Suffice,' 'Good Intentions Paving Company' and 'Easy.' After two or three listens, it has become my favorite on the album.
@aarondoobz Great artists never really repeat themselves. Haven't heard the new album(s) yet but am looking forward to it. Fell in love with MilkEyed Mender, but too ages to get any value out of Ys. It wouldn't be an album I would recommend someone to listen to for a first hearing of Joanna.
Great artists never really repeat themselves. Haven't heard the new album(s) yet but am looking forward to it. Fell in love with MilkEyed Mender, but too ages to get any value out of Ys. It wouldn't be an album I would recommend someone to listen to for a first hearing of Joanna.
Besides, i guess that after playing this song way long time before she released Have One On Me, she wanted to give the song "little changes" or something like that when recording it.
like for example, Peach Plum Pear has changed so much from the original version in Walnut Whales
The reason that the album version sounds a bit subdued could be that she lost her voice between this recording and her album recording. The album version is beautiful nonetheless.
Same here. I was actually shocked finally listening to the song on the record. It didn't seen at all the same track. This moves me to tears, the one on the record is too contained and restrained to have that effect on me.
I was also a bit disappointed by the "Esme" version on Have One On Me. The immediacy doesn't seem to be there on the recording. It almost seems subdued instead of passionate. Like an outline of how the song is rather than how the song is.
If that makes sense. At least we still have the live version!
Now that the album version of this has leaked and I've heard it, I have to say I actually prefer the version in this video. For reasons thenerocomplex stated, as well as how much more magical and powerful her voice sounds at most times. The important moments of musical swelling and buoyancy in this version seem to have a lot more impact as well.
Indeed. I did also compare both versions. And many more songs. And the thing is that her studio versions seem to be emotion limited. Like if she was catious to not let out a passionated scream, and this was such a bad thing. I mean, the new songs are brilliant, but the studio versions lack the "expression" that the live versions have. After all, this is art, and what matters is to feel what the artist felt and interpret the piece as it is. No boundaries. I hope someday to see her.
i love how her voice just pours out and cascades down so fluidly when she first sing at the beginning. the "I...." is so perfect, it really makes the song. so stunning.
It has been a good couple of years since i started listening to her and i still listen every single day. I can't say that for any other artist I've ever come across, she is amazing.
Me too. I started listening to her a couple of months ago, and now I listen to her every day. I just feel drawn to the spirit of her music right now. Its absolutely compelling!
This just shows the breadth of talent that Joanna Newsom has. She creates one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and is in absolutely no rush to record and release it!
How can I lament love lost while listening to this? I can't, because every women who walked out of my life is nothing compared to Joanna, therefore, my sorrows are minimized :)
Thank you Joanna for providing so much with your voice and song alone that is more than most can hope to give in a lifetime.
the lyrics aren't as complex as her stuff off of Ys but this sounds beautiful! I guess thats what matters. Hoping it will be recorded as a b-side to her next EP!
I'll never understand how ppl who listen to disposable manufactured American Idolesque pop or uninspired commercial hiphop can listen to this, and actually think it's bad music.
Not since I first got into dnb 11 yrs ago, have I been blown away musically. So beautiful and unique, how can you not like it? Her music just does something to me...I just love it. Truly the sound of an angel.
@gazeff True, music (and most anything) is subjective. But if one thinks Lady Gaga or Lil Wayne is the greatest shit ever, but thinks this is garbage, they would have to be musically, culturally, and creatively inept. Sorry if it that seems harsh.
Wow. i have heard a cpl of her songs. and i love them. But this one gave me chills straight up. Thats when i know its miraculous like. It Breathes for me
I watch this video to listen to this song nearly as often as I listen to other Joanna Newsom songs. I will probably know it by heart before the album comes out, unless she makes significant changes in the studio.
Sadly, no, I'm certainly not privy to any special information about her releases. I just hope that it happens this year.
Funny thing is, I just noticed that I posted the same "I can't wait for her next album" comment on this very video a year ago. Hopefully the time can keep passing fast like that until it's actually out.
There's an article on Pitchfork about her just now. Says she just played a secret show under the name The Beatles's. A two and a half hour show with a lot of new material. No release date for an album yet though unfortunately and I don't think there's any footage from the show - for once a secret show that was a secret.
If I ever met her in real life I'd probably latch onto her leg and refuse to let go, she's awesome.
(BTW that's not a sick fantasy or anything, I just like her music, I'm a girl and not a lesbian... although saying that I'd probably go lesbian if Joanna Newsom offered me sex. Hahaha.)
but one of the most beautiful things about her music is that there's so much of the real world in it. it seems like that to me... that behind all of the fantasy there's this constant awareness acknowledgment of plain, hard reality. it feels painful at times. but it's very beautiful and it's one of the main reasons why i love her music.
I absolutely could not stand her when I first brought home her album....and I was livid, and wanted to revolt, against all that sang her praises....a week later I revisited her album and fell in love...and a year later now, I will prouly say she blows my mind and makes me happy to be alive. She is beautiful, she is wonderful.....she makes me happy to be alive. Bless her, by whatever higher power you adhere to.
"Ys" was just as beautiful as "The Milk Eyed Mender". Does anyone know any more about her new album? I'm really looking forward to it when I hear this beautiful song! :)
dark era?! Pah, this is the best era I can remember...Fleet Foxes,Department Of Eagles, Bon Iver, Peter Broderick, Horse Feathers, The Tallest Man On Earth, MGMT, Conor Oberst have all released phenomenal albums in 2008. Then 2009 starts with the new Animal Collective album which is awesome. Plus, in terms of mainstream music...what with MGMT and Kings Of Leon to name a few, I think this is a wonderful era. Joanna Newsom remains the most wonderful musician alive though.
Absolutely breathtaking. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Brilliant. Genius. Joanna is one of the few people that I can honestly say has changed my life by sheer artistic force.
Beautiful sound !

I'm struggling, too...I'm being split in two. Tears at work makes for an awkward transaction, but I can't stop watching her..

"Ys" was just as beautiful as "The Milk Eyed Mender". Does anyone know any more about her new album? I'm really looking forward to it when I hear this beautiful song! :)

Joanna Newsom is the light in an otherwise dark era of music...
penussamf 3 years ago 9

Minus Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, I completely agree.
Dark age of music.. yeah right.
People need to do some searching.

Absolutely breathtaking. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Brilliant. Genius. Joanna is one of the few people that I can honestly say has changed my life by sheer artistic force.
