I'm a longtime, massive Springsteen fan..and I do like this version. But I prefer the solo version on 18 Tracks more. Personally I feel this version suffers a little from slightly leaden pacing, in the same way as Factory does and even Darkness itself does on The DOTEOT album, compared to the live versions. I don't mean in anyway to knock the songs, as I know each are massively important in his career (Darkness and this being personal favourites of mine) Either way, we're blessed to have him.
Unbelievebly awesome version! I can't wait for "The Promise" box set to come out in November; I'm gonna get it on the first day. I hope this version of the song is on it.
By the way, Happy 61st Birthday, Bruce! Can't wait to see you in concert again!
@nick16754 it turns out that the version of "the promise" on the box set isn't exactly this one, but it's very similar and still so powerful. the box set version is slightly more produced, and i think it's been sped up a little, but the changes aren't all that obtrusive. still i think this version here is the best and this song perhaps the most compelling one bruce has written.
True it is is a different take on the set, a little shorter than this and they corrected the tempo without changin the pitch. You can tell it is dfferent because of the keyboard parts.
can't think of many people who could write stuff like this and not ever release it.ok we got it on tracks and live in ny city but you know what i mean.
i reckon this could easily have been on darkness, but why he didn't put it on,only springsteen knows.!!
maybe it was because thunder road was doing so well as a song of inspiration and dreams,if he released this a couple of years later it might of stuck a spanner in the wheels of one of his greats, comments on this please
The reason he didn't put it on Darkness is because: (this is what he said at the Promise documentary)
"It could've made it on the record if they had finished recording it because it fit in the temper of the record, but Springsteen felt that he's "too close to it," as he said in the documentary. "I felt I couldn't judge it myself at the time," he added.
He also denied that this song was about the lawsuit, but hey we'll never know the truth probably ^^.
For my money, this is the best of all the versions I've heard of this song, which number about five now. Beautiful.... He sounded wounded, beaten, & knowing back then. The version he does these days has become invaded with all those faux country inflections in his vocals that he's picked up since on the Tom Joad and Devils and Dust tours. I just don't care for that style of singing that he's incorporated into his slower tunes. It's his song - but it's my memory of it he's messin' with.....
@hbbeverlymusic yea absolutely man. this is the original outtake from the darkness sessions. one of the best written songs by bruce. ive been waiting to hear this live forever
I think he felt it was too long and I had heard he did not like the vocals. The song is awesome and it is not even quite mixed all the way. The only time he played this with the band live was in May, 1978 at Buffalo, NY's Shea Theatre. There is a bootleg of it with a slightly different second verse.
bobbelibob, nobody likes the tracks version better (almost), but I know what you're saying. Every live version of this song was done on the piano without the full band (the only live recording with the band was during the 1978 Darkness tour rehearsals)
sorry to sound redundant but "Not just my favorite Springsteen song, but my favorite song of all time." does it for me too. Beautiful job on the video! You selected the full band version, one of 3 studio tracks known to exist from 1977; he was locked out of the studio during 1976, so he wrote this song live in his shows that year-check it out

I'm not sure why he didn't release this version. I just hope and pray that it's on the Darkness Revisited Box Set that's coming out later this year.

I guess it's the original version, recorded near 77 or 78, you can find it on some bootlegs.

That is soul destroying.
What a song. Another phenomenal Springsteen song.
