  • Thanks to everyone that has shared their Starlog story! Its wonderful to read such great comments!

  • As a teenager in 1976 searching the newstand for my favorite comicbooks I found this cool new magazine called STARLOG (issue #1). I was not a Star Trek fan at that time, but I noticed the title "King Kong: Old vs New" and since I was looking forward to watch the first remake I knew this was the kind of mag I wanted to read.I bought the magazine and read it from cover to cover. I got hooked, became a subscriber, became a Trek fan, discovered old classics through it, even bought the t-shirt!

  • @priestpega So you became a Star Trek fan eventually? That shirt must have been

something else..or rather.. out of this world!

  • I remember back in the day (since 1984) I would stop by my local kiosk every end of the month and pick up an issue of Starlog magazine. I eventually subscribed to it by the early 1990s until finally by the beginning of 2002-2003 (don't recall exactly when) it suddenly went digital (i.e. NO MORE MAGAZINES!). I've haven't read one article ever since because it went "computerized". God how I HATE the electronic age...miss the old days!!! P.S. Nothing beats a magazine, esp. when computers CRASH!!!

  • Unfortunately, in the last ten years of Starlog's publication, the QUALITY

of stories and articles went down quite a bit.

That made many not to renew their subscription.

Ran into writers and cartoonists at cons

that told me they submitted stuff to STARLOG

and always rejected. In fact many told me, their pieces were

returned without standard rejection letter. Made it tough

to write it off in their taxes as a business expense.

SL staff didn't know a good article when one was sent to them.

  • For all you youngsters out there -- STARLOG is what we used to call the internet back then.

  • I have missed STARLOG SO MUCH for the past two yerasrs. Been reading it since 1978.

  • 1976. Sigh. I miss the 1970s.

  • I MISS STARLOG MAGAZINE PERIOD!!!!

  • All that remains are back issues. Nothing beats a good, old fashioned magazine. You can read it at anytime, put it away for a rainy day, and the only way it will disappear is if you TRASH it. This online biz kills me; so much reliance on computers (not that I have anything against it). Let's hope one day some NASTY global-virus doesn't incapacitate every mainframe in the world---then what are you going to read??? I say: if it ain't broke, don't fix it! NOTHING beats a good, ole magazine!

  • I recognize that theme...it's the theme from the 1985 TV series "Amazing Stories". That show was on the Sci-Fi Channel many years ago, was it not?

  • @aigomar Absolutely correct! Thank you for the post.

  • I had four of them (aliens,robots,3-d speacial effects and spaceships first edition. And you cannot forget the vintage Starlog t-shirt with the whole eclipes. And you cannot forget the record sound-tracks offers, phantasm, the fog, battle beyond the Stars.........where did those days go ?????????

  • @fronio89 That's an excellent collection of Photo guides you had! The only records I had from the Starlog, were the vinyl disks that were inserted into the magazine itself. Themes from the "Varse Sarabande Album" like the "Avengers" and "First men on the moon" . I believe there was a disk insert that contained the "CEOT3K" theme too, however, I may be mistaken. Those days flew by fast - Thankfully, Starlog captured the magic and the sense of wonder I experienced during those years.

  • @SonOfSpork I never had a issue with a 45 in it. For some reason i always missed them, but I rebounded with the ultra cool Starlog scrap book number 2 and best of number 2 and 3, I belive i was the only 11 year old with Erin Grey,Sean Young,Sandal Bergman, along with the usaul pull out posters of s.w. ,c.e.o.t.3.k ,alien, beastmaster, and among others ..........LaserBlast..............on my bedroom walls.......

  • @fronio89 It must have been cosmic to have had all those Starlets of Sci-Fi, hanging on the walls! A poster for LaserBlast - Excellent!

  • SonOfSpock hi ,remember the Starlog Photo Guide Books, for some reason nobody over the years recalls them..........

  • @fronio89 I most certainly do, alongside the other related goodies released by Starlog publication.

Among these treats were: Photo guides, year-end recap specials, attire, soundtracks and posters. The Photo guides were dedicated to a wide range of elements within the Genre: Heroes, Villains, Aliens, Space art, Special effects, Fantastic worlds, Toys and Robots to name a few.

...And don't forget the Starlog Baseball cap to coincide with your very own Starlog wrist watch!

    Good day fronio89

  • I still vividly recall buying #6 - my first issue - in a local drug store. Such a fan magazine during its first several years, as was "Fangoria".

  • Ok, I gotta say, I really enjoyed this. Awesome work, I didnt know anyone else cared about Starlog lol. Still got a ***load of Starlog Mags. 5 stars for this my friend.

  • Wonderful, Thanks for the upload!

  • Thanks for this. Cinemagic and Starlog were the magazines I subscribed to until I started having to read "trade magazines" This past fall, somewhere in a thrift store, I hope a kid hit the treasure trove of Starlogs I dropped off from when I was a kid.

  • Thank you for your comments Adom - Wish I could have been that Kid in the Thrift store!

  • I enshrine every perfectly ppeserved copy of Starlog as an exciting reninder of my childhood / adolecence--Most of the shows & movies (Best by my choice) will be with me in various forms forever... I still pruchase Si Fi mags -but miss that teenage thrill of the latest STARLOG...-you had to be there... Austrev

  • Thank you for your comment Austrev!

  • As a subscriber, I've been wondering why I haven't received any issues for the past few months; then, when I "googled" it JUST NOW, I was hard hit to discover that they went digital; they are discontinuing the printing of the magazine!!! I've been buying from newsstands/ later subscribing to them, since 1982! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED???? What about those of us who DO NOT have Internet, much less own a computer? Technology could really fuckin' SUCK, esp. when they shove it down your throat!!!

  • Great video -- nicely done. A great trip down memory lane.

  • I liked the early Starlog, from the late 70's to the early-to-mid 80's, but after that it became more or less and industry shill.

In the mid-to-late 90's, only Sci Fi Universe had the balls to speak critically about some of the more mediocre aspects of the then-huge Trek franchise (such as Voyager); in response, the industry bought out Sci Fi Universe and fired the staff.

  • I wholeheartedly agree.. The late 70's to mid 80's where indeed the life blood of Starlog-- just as the Sci-fi / fantasy boom during that era. The decline and interest in the magazine has a direct correlation to the content that went wayside once the late 80's and 90's hit. There are a few "Best of" issues from the late 80's 90's, but besides a few diamonds in the rough, the interest level plummets.

  • Continued..

I wasn't aware that the staff from Sci Fi Universe was fired in response to their truth telling. Damn Peculiar, but no surprise: Trek fans can really put up a stink!

    Thanks for your comments jpowell180!

  • There were alot of good moments starlog captured like HardWare,Split Second,Class of 1999,I Come In Peace.

Todays movie makers suck, theres no heart and integrity in it.

  • Hardware is genius! I remember watching it for the first time on a Canadian movie channel back in the day called "First Choice"...It blew my head off....in laughter! "I come in peace" was a choice cut too!!

  • Can't forget "Circuitory Man". He was like a evil Max HeadRoom outside the box.

  • Great magazine. It will be missed.

  • Long Live "Science-Faction" great job Spork!!

  • This is how I like my Sci-Fi! What a brilliant piece of work! You've captured and inventivly saluted an era of creativity that is sorely missed--Godbye Luke, Steve, Flash, Buck, matte paintings, laser guns, blue screens, Cylons, heroes, vilains, black, white, wonder, and fun--

Hello, big, too intelligent for their own good, dark, brooding, boring, stinking lop of shit that Sci-Fi has become--

    RIP Starlog!...and thanks Spork!

  • Thanks for the comments JKCLAWW!
